Lord_Kane: how?
It is a play on words. A new Doom game for GOG => Doom for GOG and I spelt it out. No doom and gloom today when it comes to this shop.

Gudadantza: Requirements are a bit high, ain't them?
avatar
argamasa: That was thinking.
Well if someone is interested the game seems to run fluid at least starting the game and killng some minions from hell. No slowdowns or mouse lag etc..

To have an idea I use an insufferable outdated laptop: Windows 10, AMD APU E-450 dual core 1,65 Gh, 8 GB RAM, 512 dedicated VRAM Radeon HD Mobile Graphics 6XXXM

And the game is frluid in fullscreen/windowed under opengl 3.2 and a couple of effects disabled.
Really, I do not understand. Who knows, maybe tomorrow my computer explodes or its pieces are melt together.

idbeholdME: Because it simplified the game and it lost some of its charm. Light and shadow play was a huge factor in the original, which the BFG neutered by this along with point 1. Before, you had to pick between going in with good visibility, or gun at the ready, risking getting ambushed from the dark. It all added to the atmosphere of the game being primarily a horror shooter.

And I don't really consider changing the game genre as something trivial.

Syphon72: Maybe I'll do side-by-play through this weekend of both versions. Been some time since I played Doom 3. Because I remember BFG still had the Horror shooter feel to me.
There are tons of comparison videos or reviews of this already. You can of course play through the games, but it will all depend on your subjective point of view. I am pretty purist when it comes to games,

For example, I've just watched a video linked in one of the BFG Edition reviews here on GOG and the points made in the video pretty much perfectly align with my conclusions. Which I've landed on back in like 2015 or so, when I got the BFG Edition and tried the Doom 3 from it.

J Lo: "watered down version for casuals, originally a console release"

The original Doom 3 was released on the first Xbox. I think I still have the box for the Xbox version.

Spectrum_Legacy: The original Doom 3 was a PC game first and foremost, ported to Xbox later on by 3rd party developer. Facts.
Game mechanics were unchanged when it was ported to the Xbox. Facts.

Elmofongo: Now I hope this other lost FPS game from the N64 gets the PC re-release.

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion
I don't think it will be easy to get a port of Turok 3 to PC soon. Firstly, because this last port of the original trilogy was never released on PC (I honestly don't know if the Remake made so far, i.e. Turok 1 and 2 are based on the PC or N64 versions or are some kind of hybrids with modifications of the original video game code or is a remake from zero). Although I'm inclined to the idea that the remakes of Turok 1 and 2 were possible because both already had PC ports. Turok 3 was, so to speak, an N64 exclusive. Secondly, if it were ported to PC, it would be through development from zero. This would be a remake in every sense of the word. Although everything is possible and maybe someday someone will give us the pleasant surprise of Turok 3.

idbeholdME: That's Doom 3: BFG Edition. Which changed a ton of things and usually for the worse from the original.

It still is listed separately on Steam for example.

Just the most notable offenders:
1) Most levels have been brightened up, completely killing the atmoshpere.
2) Flashlight can now be active along with a weapon, killing the dynamic of trading visibility for a ready weapon.
3) A lot of ammo has been added throughout the levels, killing any potential resource scarcity.

They basically transformed an atmospheric horror shooter into a generic action shooter.
Was ammo really an issue? I don't remember begging for ammo in original Doom 3 like I was with RE:2 and 3. Most enemies were easily kill-able. The hitscan enemies were tougher to beat than the actual demons. They threw easily dodge-able fireballs, and their melee attacks were slow. Hell knights in Doom 3 were a joke. Dodge its fireball, run up to it and blast it in the head with the shotgun, move back to dodge its swipe, rinse and repeat. The only one that gave me problems was the mancubus with the TV on its face.

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion
+ Turok Rage wars for all the funny weapons and that monkey mode.

J Lo: That's what the N64 expansion pak was for XD

Spectrum_Legacy: Doom 3 + RoE ≠ Doom 3 BFG edition, as already explained. BFG edition is the watered down version for casuals, originally a console release. Downgrade in most respects imo.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Doom 3 + RoE was being run down so there's only the BFG edition left.
You could still buy them for about £1 each on sale.

The list is even worse: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_3:_BFG_Edition#Differences_with_Doom_3

All in all I can not fathom why Bethesda decided to practically ruin the game(s) like that... how about SEGA remastered Alien: Isolation and turned on a huge amount of light sources and added plentiful ammo, health and stuff, so you basically could play with the alien like it was SUPERTED?

"Yeah dude, it's the same game". Heck no! :D

Anyway, really nice to see Doom64 here.

Difficulty was never Doom 3s strong point, which is why changing it into a generic action shooter is a terrible idea in the first place. You could probably easily go through the entire game with just the shotgun. And if you were hitting your shots, then no, ammo was not an issue in a sense that you would never run out completely. But you still couldn't just keep using the same weapon all the time. If you kept using plasma all the time, you would run out. Chaingun ammo burned out really quick whenever you were using it. The BFG Edition made it so you basically drown in ammo and never have to think about it at all.

The review linked above even has some specific numbers. It basically doubles the amount of available ammo in some places.

Some things were adjusted for console, like autoaim because of gamepad's lack of precision compared to mouse etc but that doesn't really matter in the whole picture.

What you mention is exactly my point though. Doom 3 was developed as a pc game, not as some corner-cutting lowest common denominator (because of console release) title. And who moaned the most about it being too dark, too hard, too spooky? Yep, you guessed it... the console users. But at least it lead to the BFG edition development - primarily for the consoles. I reckon there's no point in going into further details and technicalities. We walked the full circle here together after all.

I thought so too, esp. after seeing that only the BFG edition landed on GOG back then. It's surprising that bathesda didn't remove the original version on steam, but I guess they are aware of people who simply don't buy into "improved graphics and gameplay of BFG edition" which is like a meme now, considering that the old version actually has higher quality native textures than the BFG and allows higher graphical settings among other things.

As long as the original is up for sale, then it's good - I just wish that gog would sell what many consider the best version, instead of what bathesda calls the superior version. However as it seems, not everyone gets that and we can't choose here.

Bought. Here's hoping we see 2016, Eternal, and the original release of Doom 3 on GOG soon.
Great release !
Really wanted to buy this game but I can't.
