Studying the anatomy of space demons.

Doom 3: BFG Edition is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 75% launch discount.
Back to reclaim its FPS throne, Doom 3 adds a strong dose of claustrophobic horror into the series' timeless cocktail of explosive action, horrific enemies, and ultra-violent massacre.

The BFG Edition is the game's remastered version, containing DOOM, DOOM II, DOOM 3, and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil, as well as The Lost Mission.

Feeling nostalgic or just awfully trigger-happy? Check out our Bethesda shooters sale.
The 75% discount will last until August 28, 1 PM UTC.
To be honest, I've been counting on original Doom 3 not the sissy edition.. Hope the game will be added in the near future as well as other missing games:
Rage
Hexen
Heretic
Dishonored
Wolfenstein
Commander Keen
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Ugh. BFG Edition, the easier, tensionless, less atmospheric, less graphically impressive version of Doom 3.
Man, what a pile of crap the Rage engine was. A complete engineering dead end.

ReynardFox: snip
What a nightmare. Jumpscares and that gloomy atmosphere played a huge part on Doom 3. I'll check it out and then I'll give this BFG game a decent run to say what I think but for now thanks a lot for sharing this info, man.

ralphunreal: Which one of those emails is best to tell them? Also I encourage others to email them also but please be nice and respectful.
It's a weird thing to contact them about so I can't say what's the most appropriate channel. I'll probable go with info@bethsoft.com because that seems most generic. It's definitely not a press inquiry, and it's not a support request for any particular game..

Marioface5: Good to see more Bethesda releases, not so great to see that this version doesn't have multiplayer and that we don't have the original Doom 3 available. It doesn't bode well for us getting the original version of Skyrim someday instead of just the mod-breaking re-release.
On the plus side, maybe SKSE will be available for the SE when Skyrim finally gets here,,;)

Also, at least it is possible to find the original Doom 3 on Steam via the search function. Old Skyrim - nope. It's still there and can be bought, but only if you can get there. One way is via the Steam version of SKSE - which, ironically, you CAN still find normally.

victorchopin: Oh thanks!
And why is that, this "eeew" about this release? I'm humbly asking since I played the base game on launch day and it's an amazing fps in every sense out there. This BFG release looks amazing though; reminds me of a console release or something, suitable for controllers which is cool but I'm seeing here it's a bit butchered or modified or whatever and that can't be good...

ReynardFox: The original game played heavily on lighting, with thick shadows to create an atmosphere, there was a lot of darkness and the fact you couldn't always have a flashliight out was deliberate design that the lighting (and enemy encounters) played on that to create a tense, creepy and oppressive atmosphere.

In BFG, you just have a flashlight at all times mounted on your armor that's active when you hold a weapon, the brightness levels have been raised significantly all over as well, negating the need for a flashlight at all, lighting was simplified (weapon fire no longer has muzzle flash or illuminates the environment) and a whole bunch of environmental decals were straight up removed, so all that atmosphere has been completely sucked out.

Also a lot of enemy encounters got cut and some areas were either simplified or removed entirely, extra ammo was added to make it even more like a generic, easy shooter, playable arcade machines are gone, and they added an automatic checkpoint system over the original manual saving which utterly breaks the tension.

On top of this, graphics options were simplified and the mod support for all the things people made in the original version is gone.
Hi ReynardFox

I appreciate you preferred the original. I have played through the original in the past and have just tried BFG- there are a couple of points you should note:

the flashlight is not active when you hold a weapon- it must be turned on and off and still has a power drain- granted you can still fire.

It looks to me as though there is still muzzle flash, though not sure if this is still illuminating dark areas.

The first chicken arcade is playable.

The automatic saving can be turned off if manual is required.

Edit: these are just quick tests and it has been a long time since I played the original, but it doesn't seem that bad.

It must have been patched after I gave up on it, you could not disable auto checkpoint saves when I played it.

The only flash in BFG is the weapon model itself lights up, there's no muzzle flare and no environmental illumination for anything other than the BFG.

I don't remember being able to turn off the flashlight, maybe that was patched in or I'm just remembering badly because the lighting was so overbright in general.

tfishell: I better hold off on buying right now, because of limited income.

I must agree that it is a shame the original Doom 3 + RoE wasn't released, for those interested. I know that was what Grargar wanted, at least originally. And I assume a decent portion of the 5,000+ votes for Doom 3 are for the original, too. (I'd say it also gives ammo to the idea that - for better or worse - GOG is simply a business, not really interested in preservation.)
The think that I was more miffed about than the original Doom 3 not being thrown in to the mix was the fact that they supply BFG without LAN play. The original BFG used steam for MP but vanilla D3 allowed LAN support.

Basically ID just disabled MP entirely for this version.

Definitely not a preservation agenda when you supply a gimped version of the game and don't even bother including things like digital copies of the manual or wallpapers etc
I completely forgot to add that BFG also cripples the utterly brilliant audio of the original. The use of atmospheric, spatial sound in Doom 3 is still a pinnacle of sound design in gaming, it is actually ingenious how it was implemented.

Too bad everything sounds flat and muffled in BFG by comparison.

There's also a Co-op mod for the original Doom 3 + RoE.

Can it be that hard to offer the original version as well?

Well I will agree with this, because I looked for it specially. EAX is gone.

Dogmaus: I gave in and bought everything. Now I have every iD and Bethesda game here on GOG. I just need the time to play all this. And I know it's been said all over the threads but I really would rejoice in seeing the Heretic and Hexen games here as well.
Heretic and Hexen were not included when Bethesda bought out ID. They are owned by another company. But agree that GOG should make deal to bring them here.

The BFG edition being on here finally is a first step in the right direction, but as long as the original release version along RoE is not available separately as well I'll have to refrain from a purchase unfortantely.

Nicole28: Woo! More Bethesda games!

I hope Skyrim and Fallout 4 will be getting a release here sometime in the future? ;)
Skyrim maybe but it's way too soon for Fallout 4.
AWWWW YEAH! Thanks gog I was waiting for this one to come for a long time.
