Doom 3: BFG Edition is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 75% launch discount.
Back to reclaim its FPS throne, Doom 3 adds a strong dose of claustrophobic horror into the series' timeless cocktail of explosive action, horrific enemies, and ultra-violent massacre.

The BFG Edition is the game's remastered version, containing DOOM, DOOM II, DOOM 3, and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil, as well as The Lost Mission.

Feeling nostalgic or just awfully trigger-happy? Check out our Bethesda shooters sale.
The 75% discount will last until August 28, 1 PM UTC.
Can you please consider releasing the original Doom 3?
Instabuy.

OK its not the original, I can live with that. The flashlight only was a bad decision in the original anyway (in my opinion)

And two extra doom games bundled in all for less than 4 quid?

Whats not to like?

Cool release gog.

victorchopin: Oh thanks!
And why is that, this "eeew" about this release? I'm humbly asking since I played the base game on launch day and it's an amazing fps in every sense out there. This BFG release looks amazing though; reminds me of a console release or something, suitable for controllers which is cool but I'm seeing here it's a bit butchered or modified or whatever and that can't be good...
The original game played heavily on lighting, with thick shadows to create an atmosphere, there was a lot of darkness and the fact you couldn't always have a flashliight out was deliberate design that the lighting (and enemy encounters) played on that to create a tense, creepy and oppressive atmosphere.

In BFG, you just have a flashlight at all times mounted on your armor that's active when you hold a weapon, the brightness levels have been raised significantly all over as well, negating the need for a flashlight at all, lighting was simplified (weapon fire no longer has muzzle flash or illuminates the environment) and a whole bunch of environmental decals were straight up removed, so all that atmosphere has been completely sucked out.

Also a lot of enemy encounters got cut and some areas were either simplified or removed entirely, extra ammo was added to make it even more like a generic, easy shooter, playable arcade machines are gone, and they added an automatic checkpoint system over the original manual saving which utterly breaks the tension.

On top of this, graphics options were simplified and the mod support for all the things people made in the original version is gone.

I want to participate in that "WE WANT THE ORIGINAL DOOM 3 WITH THE ORIGINAL ADD ON" campaign.

The BFG is just a whacky mess.

I better hold off on buying right now, because of limited income.

I must agree that it is a shame the original Doom 3 + RoE wasn't released, for those interested. I know that was what Grargar wanted, at least originally. And I assume a decent portion of the 5,000+ votes for Doom 3 are for the original, too. (I'd say it also gives ammo to the idea that - for better or worse - GOG is simply a business, not really interested in preservation.)

I've sent Bethesda email in the past, thanking them for bringing the old Dooms & Quakes here back when they did so. I also expressed my interest in a release of Doom 3. I got a nice reply back.

I think it is time to do the same, but also tell them that we would love to have the option to get the original version. It might not make a difference, but it won't hurt to send the message. It's probably better than whining on GOG forums anyway.

I encourage others to do the same. Please be respectful.

I've said before that I'd buy Doom 3 as soon as it's here. I kept my word. Still, I look forward to the original.

There is enough people here wanting the original version, if we keep up I am sure we can get it here. I remember when the original doom 3 was taken down from steam when bfg came out and there was an uproar which had them put the original doom 3 back up.

Which one of those emails is best to tell them? Also I encourage others to email them also but please be nice and respectful.

I want the original version too, I am surprised they give us the BFG edition which includes Doom 1 and 2 and we already have those 2.

Please give us the original Doom 3 and Ressurection of Evil.

But other than the whole Flashlight thing, why is the BFG version of Doom 3 bad?

Dogmaus: I gave in and bought everything. Now I have every iD and Bethesda game here on GOG. I just need the time to play all this. And I know it's been said all over the threads but I really would rejoice in seeing the Heretic and Hexen games here as well.
I suggest to start with Q1 ... that one is actually quite short, like under 1h of game time.... https://youtu.be/Q2OcR_0zCug
(I mean after few months/years of practice).
Intsa-bought

I already have the original versions on disc, so not worried about it being the BFG version
also not really interested in the BFG edition

Elmofongo: But other than the whole Flashlight thing, why is the BFG version of Doom 3 bad?
Forced checkpoint system, many removed enemy encounters, levels have sections simplified or entire areas and traps flat out removed, overabundance of ammo, many missing atmospheric graphics details, lowered FOV, simplified collisions, dumbed down graphics options, missing mod support, no muzzle flashes, interactive arcade games removed, extra general bugs and glitches and brightness levels that make that forced flashlight cause everything to look overbright and washed out...

It is not bad. It is different. And there is good reason to want the original.

The whole flashlight thing is a huge change in atmosphere and tension imho, and some areas of the game are just designed to exploit the tension you feel when you're facing abysmal darkness and fully expecting to be attacked.. the looming choice between carrying a flashlight and being more vulnerable vs carrying a weapon. I think Doom 3 is all about atmosphere and tension, and as a pure shooter it isn't so great. When you take away some of that tension, the end result is imho weaker. It is arguable, which is why I say the BFG edition is not bad. It is just different.

Apart from that, other people have linked to resources that list some changes in the maps and encounters.

Another important thing is that there is a multiplayer (co-op) mod for the original. That's something you just don't have with the BFG edition.

EDIT: I wrote some opinions about Doom 3 not too long ago here: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/still_no_doom_3/post53
