Lifthrasil: Same here. I liked her initially. She was cute and charming and funny. ... But then she turned full Mary Sue and got boring and annoying.

My favourite companions, so far, are Rose and Donna Noble. Followed by Sarah Jane.
She really felt shoehorned into Capaldi's era, she just didn't work alongside him, there just wasn't the same chemistry even before her stories started to feel forced.

Your favourites are also mine, but add Amy Pond to the list. Donna and Amy are probably tied for my all-time favourite.

Lifthrasil: Actually, when they first announced that the Doctor would become female, I had hoped they would combine it with the other long awaited feature: being a ginger. And I hoped for Emma Thompson. She would have made a great Doctor!
I don't think I could ever be totally on board with the Doctor being genderswapped, but if anyone oculd sell me on it it would probably be Emma Thompson. And even if I wouldn't quite buy it that it's the same person, she'd still make it worth watching anyway.

I was never very fond of Amy. Her crush on the Doctor annoyed me, even more so as she was engaged. And much like Clara she was always just too... cool. Too ready to take everything in stride. Sarah Jane and Donna were perfect in my opinion because while they still had plenty of courage and cleverness (not to mention many other fine qualities) they were also always properly out of their depth with all the amazing, crazy stuff going on.

Anyway, I doubt anyone would mention him, but I always liked the Doctor's unlikely one-time-only companion, Donna's grandfather Wilfred. Charming, kind older gent. I would have loved seeing the two of them travelling together.

Lifthrasil: I stopped watching because of her three companions. I like Jodie Whitaker and she is a charming Doctor ... even if she is portrayed too inept at times. But the companions are just a boring, annoying bunch without much character depth. And yes, the writing sucks. Jodie is given bad scripts that you can only do so much with.
I did like Bradley Walsh's acting though. But ultimately three is simply too many companions to have long term without them being poorly developed- and that made them seem like they were picked solely to make sure that ethnic checkboxes were being ticked. Bill had more development in a third (?) of the episodes while being a far less jarring example of 'progressive' writing, and when Moffat's writing was clearly getting a bit tired overall. I can't even remember the names of the current (well, two are gone, now) companions.

It was the plotting that really got me though, I don't think a coherent plot is too much to demand even in what is supposed to be light entertainment, and Doctor Who mostly managed that over its history up until recently. I didn't stop watching wholesale, but it's very much background TV and no real worry if I miss it.

Clara would have been fine, if they'd actually killed her off instead of having her jet off with Arya Stark.

Going back a long way now, but Adric was a fairly similar character archetype, and retroactively improved massively after contributing to the Chixulhub Crater precisely because of the type of character he was.

Phasmid: ...simply too many companions...
Lazy writing. It's a technique as old as the hills. Fluff up the story with a new character. I'd pay to see Chibnall in the stocks. Maybe we can start a crowdfund...

Breja: Absolutely. I never much liked her, and by the time she left I goddamn hated her. Not just the worst companion I know, but just one of the worst characters I know. Not just in Doctor Who. Anywhere. She makes Jar-Jar look subtle and likeable. And she got three season plus special episodes.

ReynardFox: I thought Clara was quite enjoyable in her initial appearances alongside Smith, but she should never have been brought back for Capaldi's run, she was clearly writers pet and definitely overstayed her welcome.
Aw, dang. They brought her back. Looks like Dr. Who is starting to suffer Simpson's Syndrome. Again.

Well "brought back" is a little misleading. She just stayed on. Unfortunately.

BanditKeith2: Its not sexist to hate the direction the series has went

StingingVelvet: The quality of the series in general is an entirely separate conversation from "ewww the Doctor is a lady!" I stopped watching it because the writing sucks.
Exactly. Last seasons are the same as Star Trek Discard - pure concentrate of boredom.

I think the thought was she would clash with Capaldi in a different way that would be interesting. She didn't really though, and got more annoying instead. Also when she "left" but then didn't leave it was insanely bad.

The opposite for me. I don't mind the companions that much although Chibnall is doing everything he can to make Yasmine unlikable and more annoying than before.
