Woo hoo! I grabbed this - I think one of only three of my Day One purchases here? Ironically the others were Sunless Sea and Rebel Galaxy LOL. So it fits - this one seems to me to be a bit of RGs action RPG "capital class" combat / exploration set in a world not too far off from Sunless Sea.

I... even preordered :( I know I know - and it even had goodies so double no-no. But I couldn't help it - releasing what seemed to be a full featured "real" game right in my preference range, on release and at under $20 was too tough to pass up. So here's hoping it holds up!

I'm going to fire this up tonight so if anyone on the fence wants impressions let me know.

Yes, it's kind of weird; it's full 3D while you control the ship but switches to 2D when you zoom into the ship to talk to the crew. Probably the best way to get the features the developers wanted with the budget they had.

So my early impressions are pretty good. Parts of the interface feel a bit cumbersome / clunky at times but it's nothing too terrible.

The game does feel like controlling a sub. I like the control scheme and while it takes a bit of getting used to (having 6 degrees of freedom) it does scream depth, especially in advanced combat situations. I'm not sure if those encounters will ever come, but the game feels like it gives you a pretty easy to use and full toolkit of controls. Throttle, vertical movment and a key to "lock" your heading all seem like they'd allow a savvy player to do some nifty manuevering in combat. Again, I'm not sure if you'll ever NEED to, but it's neat that they're there. And you actually do need to get a bit cute with those controls just exploring, but in a fun way.

Another interesting aspect is that navigation plays a premium. It "feels" like being submerged in a low tech sub. At times you can't see too far ahead. The quest marker mechanic is there, but scaled back (it's sort of a mesh between oldschool "find your own way" and the omnipresent quest marker telling you where to go next at all times). I actually managed to get a bit terribly lost early on. It works in this game. It pays to slow down, take a breath and sort of examine your compass heading, known navigation points and visually scan to figure out your next path. I actually liked that but I can see where some might get frustrated.

So far combat has been fairly simple and I've found a few bonus crew but not purchased any yet. I *think* I have an idea of what they'd do, but I'm not quite sure. Seems like certain "stations" might benefit from certain "crew" skills - crew don't outright say they'd improve accuracy or sonar recharge but they have levels in endurance, intelligence, etc. I think if I'd pay more attention I'd realize Intelligence adds to, say sonar recharge and maybe perception might increase aim and sonar range or some such. The bottom line is a crew member doesn't give a flat "+X to aim" - depending how good their stats are they might carry both advantages and disadvantages at any given station.

Overall so far so good. It's an action type game but with a more deliberate pace which fits perfectly with what you're doing - controlling a sub in a liquid environment with a focus more on getting from point A to B and not on constantly blowing up bad guys at a breakneck pace.

Dude (I'm assuming you're Bender in the avatar...if not then dudette), you just almost sold me the game.

I just learned more about the actual gameplay than anything gog or the developers have said (guess I could've checked steam or a video but i'm lazy).

Anyway, added to the wishlist.
