Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.
How do you guys like the diablo release? I am curious because I am anticipating Warcraft 2. It will probably be done the same way.

Just bought it, but havent downloaded and played it yet. But, it's brilliant that these games will be here. With all the sad stuff going on over at Steam, one can only hope that more devs and publishers will look to GOG for a solid release platform.

happywinner: Just Diablo??
Where is Diablo 2,3 Stracraft 2, Warcraft 3 with expansion???
...
Newsflash: GOG can't release whatever they want willy-nilly. Otherwise we'd have Freelancer, Black & White, NOLF, etc. here.

We know Warcraft 1 and 2 are coming though.

Now that hell has apparently frozen over and snowballs have a chance there, let's keep the momentum and dream big: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on GOG, that would be a beautiful thing too (and as unexpected).

Really disappointing until i see this ones and i don't plan waiting forever.
Diablo is nice but i never bother to play it, it was old even when i played diablo2...
Just because it was good start for franchise doesn't meant i will waste money and my time on it. Diablo 2 is barrely acceptable by today standards...

GOG have HUGE potential as game distribution platform but they must push much harder if they wanna be successful.

GOG is right platform for game distribution.

They should add their own servers for Multiplayer ( with unified API, for example for emulating something like GameSpy )

Then whole platform start to have more value and grip.
Why/how would GOG sell Diablo 2, 3, SC2, and Warcraft 3 when Blizzard still actively supports every one of those games which are available from their own platform?

Diablo is very nice, thousands of people agree, and have bought it. If you aren't willing to "waste" your $10 on Diablo, thousands of other people already have, enough of us that it's made it's way to page 3 of the top selling games of all time on GOG in a little over a week.

But it's allowed to be disappointed, and it's allowed to dream big.

Also, it might be that Blizzard would reach a different buyer segment by putting their newer games on GOG. By releasing on both platforms, Blizzard could reach a much larger audience.

This is true, but I doubt Blizzard/Activision is exactly worried about reaching more players. Owners of World of Warcraft and Call of Duty, which have sold ridiculous amounts of subscriptions/copies over the last decade or so. In truth, simply by allowing the first Diablo to be sold on GOG is probably enough to "reach" new audiences as anybody who has been living under a rock that doesn't know of their existence will undoubtedly find out about them now. Granted I doubt any of those people have heard of GOG.

I think the biggest thing really is that by releasing their games on GOG they would have to be DRM free which would eliminate the use of Battle.net's launcher, and they want you to use their launcher not only so they can control your access to their games but also so they can advertise their other products to you. Could they still put their games on GOG AND still use their launcher? Maybe on Steam, but with GOG's no DRM "policy" it's unlikely. And let's be honest, when you buy a game on Steam (or any other platform where you already have their launcher open) and it opens another launcher, isn't that just a tad bit annoying? Looking at you Ubisoft...

I think they would be open to anything that increased their revenue, if only by a few millions. It's just the mindset of a moneymaking company. The 'new segment' in question would be the DRM-free crowd; which (I surmise) is the backbone of GOG's customer base. I'm one of those, and I was annoyed enough at Blizzards hard-nosed DRM policy from Starcraft 2 onwards that I decided to wait until eventually (if at all) they slacked those reins. I don't know how unique I am in that respect, but I believe there would be tons of money to be harvested on co-releasing on GOG. Steam, as you point out, would invite conflict, but GOG is a different arena altogether.

fr33kSh0w2012: did you remember to get the widescreen patch
I didn't think I need one. Is it an official patch from Blizzard? If so, is it only to support widescreen monitors, or does it have any other benefits?
Ummmm, just FYI, stay away from the Diablo Discord server. XD

The two GOG servers in there, while not perfect, are a hell of a lot nicer than this shit hole. :P

tojeda1982: I've been wanting to replay this game for years and my laptop does not have an optical drive so I had to download it. Glad I found this site to download Diablo.
Welcome! I wonder how many more people share your story. Nostalgia is powerful...I'm so glad a game like Diablo is available DRM-free here.
