Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.

tfishell: Anybody want to take a guess at sales figures?
A very wild guess:

We know that Stardew Valley sold more than 5 million copies on Steam. GOG normally has a market share of about 10%. Let's assume GOG's market share for Stardew Valley is very low and so it's only 5%. That would still mean Stardew Valley sold more than 250 000 units on GOG. Diablo is thiteen places above Stardew Valley now, so it obviously sold more copies. So my guess is 300 000.

Thanks for the guess.
I guess 20 million copies and Diablo 2 will now be confirmed on GOG in the coming weeks.

I would guess just over 1/2 a million. So they made around 3.8 million or more in sales

Sounds overly optimistic to me, especially since the "all-time" bestselling list apparently isn't actually tracking all sales GOG has ever made. Also, as far as I'm aware it goes by how much money was made by selling copies rather than comparing just the amount of copies of the different games sold.

I think it tracks at least all sales since the re-design of the shop (not the last one, but that one that turned everything to gray). Which means all sales since Stardew Valley was published. So I don't think my guess is overly optimistic.
Well these released will draw a lot of attention outside the normal GOG crowd since those are only sold here. My guess: between 500.000 and 1.000.000. A lot of people came from outside as well for SWAT4. And I guess The Witcher-seroes got sold a few million times. But I could be totally wrong. :-P

But I guess it should give GOG a nice buffer financial wise.

By that logic, I really have my doubts since VtM: Bloodlines (#39) has supposedly vastly outsold Stardew Valley (#62). The former may have great popularity within a certain segment, but it hasn't got nearly as much broad appeal as the latter, which was one of the top GOG bestsellers with or without sales discount for some time.

Bloodlines is legendary. Stardew Valley is just another boring farming sim. About as much fun as literally watching grass grow, then harvesting it for pennies. No, those numbers look about right to me.

You might be correct about Bloodlines, but I wonder if you played Stardew Valley?

I'm curious about that myself.

I love SV.

Yes, I did. I played it right when I bought it at release. The game felt unfinished and was quite boring. That and the time limits on some of the goals felt unrealistic. It also took way way waaaaaaaaaaay too long to clear a little big of land only for the seeds I bought to be unharvestable after planting due to season change.

Ok, tastes in games differ I guess. I just asked, because I really loved the game and for me it was far from unpolished and "just another boring farm sim".

I recall the news of Diablo releasing here showing up on news sites like Variety and (maybe) Fortune, basically sites that would basically never cover GOG release news otherwise, so I don't think high estimates like 100, 200k are really that crazy.
