It comes right before the dawn. Of full-scale warfare.

<span class="bold">Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game</span>, a grand strategy tackling 20th century's consecutive grand wars, is now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

Humanity's brief presence on the planet is so full of regrettable moments, it sometimes seems our darkest hour lasts forever. But in re-living and rearranging history's key events of agonizing strife and hopeless self-destruction humanity stands to gain wisdom and perhaps a way to envision a different outcome to what has already transpired.

The 20th century has proven to be the most suitable era for such observations, with a seemingly endless string of conflicts dominating the history books. Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game provides the perfect opportunity to not only experience but also alter the course of these events, from the start of the Great War, on June 1914, to the inconspicuous beginnings of the Cold War around 1947. The new diplomatic system and the advanced A.I. provide extra challenges as your nation must use diplomacy and military means to strengthen its place in history and tackle the hundreds of events taking place simultaneously around the world.

See your nation through 20th century's <span class="bold">Darkest Hour</span>, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. Put your mark on it with a 50% discount that will last until January 10, 1:59 PM GMT.

JudasIscariot: Tha FTG patch...is that an official patch or a mod compatibility patch?
Well afaik it's by one (?) of the original developers of FtG but it's in beta since 2013.

First, happy new year ! :D

All of this discussion reminds me http://www.gog.com/forum/hearts_of_iron_series/hoi_2_patch_13b on the Hearts of Iron forum : there's a patch 1.3B for HoI2, but it's not official even if developed by a part of the team. Do you think GOG could provide this kind of "almost official patches" as a downloadable extra concerning the paradox games ? (it's seems to be not occasional things in their games)

OP1: I bought For the Glory from GOG yesterday. Can`t fin any serial though. I already have the Gamersgate version, with a serial code, so for me it`s not really a problem.

Anyways, The FtG version on GOG is only patched to tversion 1.2. The only way to obtain the 1.3b patch on Paradox is to register the game.

I`m sure though that the GOG team will do what they can to keep all the games on their catalog fully updated so any patches will probably turn up here eventually.

The patch is not released as an official patch as the patch is stil in beta. It `s made by a member of the original dev team behind FtG.

Several betas have been released and the latest is from desember 2013. Still it contains a huge amount of fixes and improvements over 1.2 and most of the mods have been updated and is compatible with the 1.3beta patch.

For interested people (or even Judas ;)), here is a link to the patch.

So, does this version make the original HoI2 unnecessary?

For anyone interested, here is what is considered the absolute best mod for this game. It may even be one of the greatest mods for any of the Paradox games.

So is it safe to say that this game does for HoI what For The Glory did for EU?

Maybe I am wrong, but I think: YES.
This look nice to complete the collection.
How "open" is that game to incorrect history? I was quite a bit dissapointed that the diplomatic alliance building Germany I did in HOI2 did not worked as well (or rather at all) in HOI3. I refused to declare war & the game refused to do anything & dragged on till time ran up.

Good God. How long did that take in terms of real time? Weeks? Months?

Theoclymenus: Ill have a bet that the manuals for these latest Paradox offerings (if there are any) are utterly inadequate as per usual. They are fools to themselves : if they bothered to write decent manuals explaining the interface, controls, game mechanics, historical background etc. they would surely sell even more units than they do, even at the extortionate prices they charge. But they seem almost proud, as do all the silly, immature Paradox fanboys, that these games remain largely inaccessible to "the gaming masses". Either that or they are just incapable of putting a decent manual together.
I might be able to set your mind at rest here. I'm new to these games (modern warfare strategy), but I've had my eye on one for some time, and Darkest Hour looked like the one to go for. I've never seen any of the other manuals, but I think this one cannot be beaten. It's 150+ pages of landscape A4, full colour, screenshots, tables or maps on pretty much every page, comprehensive and very well written. I started by reading the manual and found myself thinking "if the game is half as good as the manual, then I'm in for a treat."

Well, almost as soon as I had posted my comments I found the .pdf manual for the game and had a look and it appears you may be right, albeit I'm not sure it was actually written by Paradox employees ? Anyway, I bought Darkest Hour last night since it was in any case very cheap and I'm looking forward to learning how to play it. Explain something well enough to people and they can learn it ! I wish Paradox would do the same for all their grand strategy games though. The manual for Europa Universalis 3, for instance, just waffles on about general concepts and doesn't help the would-be player get a grip on the game at all ; it's as if they were trying to explain how to bake a cake purely by relating the history of cake tin manufacture and sugar refinement - it just isn't what's needed and doesn't help ! Crusader Kings 2 is another Paradox title which is so poorly explained in the excuse for a manual which Paradox themselves provide that I'm sure many people just give up on the game.

Since I did not declared war to anyone and nobody declared one to me it was over pretty quick.

Not even Russia declared war to Poland this time even if it was not in the alliance (but they had from pretty much everyone the promise that everybody will declare war to anyone that declares war to them... cant imagine the dumb faces when Germany did that too after everybody else :D ).

But besides the small metagame made up gags it was a stale but quick run.
