In really, really poor taste. The charity aspect isn't enough if you ask me.

Frankly, I can't believe this is available to purchase here.

While I have played Outbreak and Pandemic -- games in the same genre -- I do question GOG's curation with a COVID-19 game. IMHO does feel a bit crass.

On the donation side of the game sales...

I understand wanting to send funds to a charity, but... I would caution against funding "oligarchical charities." Instead of funds and foundations run by oligarchs with their personal agendas, it really would be better served IMO to send funds to state, country, UN health organizations, or organizations with longstanding reputations (ie Red Cross).

While I am not immediately against funding a "charity" (CEPI) found by Bill & Melinda Gates, I do not feel they (oligarchs) need my money. I would much rather my money be going to state or international agencies with more transparency or to long-standing charities that have earned trust.

Oh, also this is from their Forum at Steam (pinned):

"Help Us Fight COVID-19!
Greetings,

The world we live in is currently enveloped by the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic. This lingering disease is a formidable opponent and we all have to be aware that it is going to stay with us for a little while before a vaccine is developed.

This brings us to the topic at hand as Jujubee would like to declare its participation in fighting this coronavirus head-on. We've decided that 20% of all our net Steam sales throughout the month of May and June will be donated to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and other charitable foundations supporting the fight against the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

By supporting us, you are supporting the development of the vaccine that we all desperately need and for that - we thank you!"

Notice the last sentence, which i think it is especially disgusting and immoral. So by buying your game, we are supporting the development of the vaccine that we all desperately need...?

yeah, only 20 percent. to me this looks like a tasteless money grab. will not buy, developer put on suspicion list, and GOG: "curated"? wtf? i would have expected this from a anything-goes store like Steam, not here tho.

They just think they are more important than they really are, let's say i wanted to donate for a vaccine then i sure wouldn't give the money to some random indie studio lol.

Too many things in how they handled this release seems hmm how to explain it, it seems not entirely genuine but that's just an assumption.

Well, instead of buying the game, you could buy the "COVID: The Outbreak soundtrack" instead and let it play in the background while watching the news. /sarcasm

Wow, that last sentence is such a blatant attempt at manipulation, preying on people's currently volatile emotions to sell copies of their game. Unbelievable.

Also, I guess they feel that 20% must be all that humanity is worth to them.

Bookwyrm627: There is no rule forbidding people from expressing dislike for a game or curation's choices. Just don't break the other rules while you do it, please.

GameRager: Fair enough, and will do my best to stick to the rules.

That said, can you see how hypocritical of GOG this is? They sell this then say "you can't talk about that event here, but we can make money from it".
I don't make the forum rules, I just try to enforce them fairly. My only other link to GOG is as a standard customer.

As a rule of thumb, I plan to mostly keep my personal opinions to myself.

If they really desperately wanted to raise funds and awareness they could have simply offered one of their games for free if you sent proof you donated to one of the medical/covid charities.

They are counting on outrage to do free marketing for them, otherwise no one would ever hear of this awful excuse for a game. I'm going to take a step back and not post anything more; here or anywhere else and advise anyone reading this to do the same. Let this pathetic cash grab die in obscurity.
Gog: "Hey Curators, we have a game here - check it out."

Curators: "Hey Gog, let the game out of your store and call for donations instead."

CEPI today is funded primarily by countries like Japan, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and others as well as by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 programme. On its board are scientists and politicians with a background in research, education, health and disease control from contributing nations. Its Joint Coordination Group consists of institutions like the WHO, the FDA, Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross/Crescent and UNICEF.

It is the largest concentrated international effort for the devolpment and distribution of affordable vaccines worldwide.

How much more trusted does it need to get?

One last semi-offtopic bit then I will return to the topic at hand:

If I were in your shoes and saw such hypocrisy(them selling political agendas wrapped as games while saying no political talk on the forums) i'd quit....I admire you trying to stick it out, and maybe help people by being a bit fair and removing spam[and etc], but I could never work under such hypocritical leadership.

(That said, I am thankful you are being fair here and letting people talk)

Today I learnt that I am a “social media troll’ even though I abhor “social” media, thanks for teaching me something new about myself!
Much love!
