Californium, a surreal adventure in the unmapped intersection of realities, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows and Mac, with a 10% launch discount.

Creating different, plausible realities is what writers do, if they are any good. Elvin Green is not considered good by his editor, who no longer wants him as his client. He is not considered good by his wife either, as made abundantly clear in the goodbye letter she left behind. Elvin Green needs a different reality. And he will get a number of them bundled with weird, psychedelic images that wash over his mind, as he looks to make sense out of a meaningless existence.

1967 is not a good year for Elvin Green. But it has now become a very interesting one. As he explores the shifting realities that converge around him, he realises he can communicate with the colorful inhabitants and hop between worlds by touching objects which don't seem to belong. And unlike the bleak, dystopian imagery in which most of Philip K. Dick's work is typically represented in various media, the realities of Californium are bathed in a vibrant, intoxicating palette, representative of Elvin Green's indulgence in recreational chemicals. Will they prove to be the root of his plights or the catalyst to better understanding himself?

Get lost within the layered realities of Californium and find the piece of mind you're missing, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% launch discount will last until February 24, 10:59 AM GMT.

catpower1980: BUT the framerate seems atrocious in that trailer :(
avatar
Venita: It's much better in the game itself.
How is that even possible? Who in their right mind records a trailer on a sub-spec machine? Or re-encodes an otherwise smooth video so it becomes choppy after the fact? Doesn't that violate rule #1 of marketing? "Yes, we know the product looks like crap in the advert, but we promise it's much better in reality."

Weird way to try to sell a product.

PaterAlf: It might be interesting that the single episodes can be downloaded for free from Arte's website:

http://californium.arte.tv/de/#/episodes
Fyi, I downloaded the 1st episode (the rest will apparently release on March) and the languages available were only French and German (no English), as evidenced from the settings. I'm thankfully fluent in French so I can play it (will probably do so later today, to see how my pc will handle the main game), just an info for whoever else will want to download it...

Oh, according to that article whoever is from Europe will be able to thusly play the whole thing for free -yay!

Relevant quote (from Google Translate):

Players from Europe can download the resulting together with the TV station Arte Adventure for free - interested parties from other countries have to pay the equivalent of around 10 euros.

The-Business: So why does arte spend TV fees to fund games which are sold? Investment in documentaries or making its archive public would be a better investment in my humble opinion.

ElarionAbendglan: You can get it's First part for free on the Arte Homepage if you are from Germany. It's Kind of like the games the BBC produces. Free for UK-Citizens but everyone else has to pay. ;)

true, BBC had or has dr who games, i saw reviews in pc gameplay magazine (dutch/belgium version)
they were free for england only, i assume they base that on ip? unless they use a check ip in the game you could simply get it by getting it in england on a laptop.

But isnt this a light form of 'discrimination'? :D

i looked it up on google:

Discrimination is treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing is perceived to belong to rather than on individual merit.
Anyway i dont mind or care if they give some games free if you live in a certain country, but it is still weird to do so.

Besides its an fpp or fps, i favor old click and point better, like dark mirror games , so anything 3d , fps or fpp is an avoid. at first look i thought it was old style point click adventure, if so i would have instabought it and the price is also okay.
Havent bought that many games since the latest 30 releases or so, just waitin for more old click and point (no fps/fpp or 3d movements) like shardlight, that looks good even if its made with adventure game engine, its the games i can play and also like .

Not really. BBC games are funded by British taxpayers. So it's only logical that they give it away for free to people from that country while others have to pay for it. Same goes for Californium. Arte is a TV station that is completely funded by German and French taxpayers. So people from these two countries already paid for the game and can get it for free.
Seems like an interesting game. Love Phillip K. Dick. Wishlisted for now. Arte going in to games development is really weird. Always seen it more like a channel for classical music. Eitherway that means the game was paid for by eu tax payers which means I will wait for a big discount on it.
In case it never gets a Linux version, has anyone tried to run it under Wine?

I can download the first episode just fine, though the link only exists on the French and German-language page, not the English one. Not a regional block, but a linguistic one. Also, your link is faulty, put the URL between the = and the ], and any text you like between ] and [ (can also be the URL if you wish, but really, anything).

The Morrison Estate just called. Their lawyer wants to have a word with you. :P
I too confirm successfully downloading the first episode. Luckily both German and French are OK for me.

No Wikipedia page.

No critic reviews on Metacritic.
I like it when games actually feel off the radar a bit.

It does run in Wine (a plain bottle via PlayOnLinux, no extra installs), but I only tried the free version off Arte's site (in which "English" is grayed-out and cannot be selected, so you get French and German as options for audio and subtitles), and with my work machine's Intel graphics, the menu was very slow (of course, my monitor uses 2560x1440 by default and it looked like the game used that too, so it might very well run better in lower resolutions), I didn't try starting a new game.

First episode is actually available for free from developer arte.tv...

http://californium.arte.tv/de/#/episodes

...and I'm quite certain that the other episodes will be free as well (at least within Europe), so what's up here?

What am I missing? Is GOG selling freeware right now?

Inspired by PKD? Now that's my kinda game! Looks lovely and sounds intriguing. And unlike the similar title KRZ, it's actually complete. Shall be picking this up once I'm ready to play it. Thanks for the surprise release!

I guess only French/German are free and only the English version is behind a paywall. In this case, being on "the good side", I'm not complaining at all :o)

The free version is only available in German and French (and only from the German and French sites, though not regionally restricted).
