The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™ – story rich, adventure fantasy title and an official adaptation based on the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien is now available on GOG!

It’s time for you to play as Gollum on his quest to retrieve his Precious. You will need to climb the mountains of Mordor, sneak around Mirkwood and make difficult choices. Who will gain the upper hand: the cunning Gollum or the innocent Smeagol?

After being corrupted by the Ring over hundreds of years, Gollum has developed exceptional agility and sharp wits. Use his unique skills to explore and infiltrate legendary locations and dizzying heights. Find your way past the Orcs as you climb the Dark Tower of Barad-dûr and give the Elves the slip in the mysterious Mirkwood.

While Gollum is no fighter, he is more than capable of strangling a careless enemy when the opportunity presents itself… or of finding a more creative and less risky way of getting out of trouble.

Additionally, alongside The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™, you grab its DLCs: Original Soundtrack, Emotes Pack, Sindarin VO, Lore Compendium, Art Exhibition, or pick the Precious Edition which contains all of the above besides the Emote Pack.

Grab The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™ now!

skeletonbow: But alas so far today it appears to have a 38% positive rating on Steam at the time of writing this, and the "positive" reviews showing are more negative reviews mocking the game with a thumbs up and funny comments, so I suspect the satisfaction rating is far lower than 38%.
Awwww damn. I haven't been rooting for Daedalic for quite some time, but I guess I was rooting for Lord of the Rings: Gollum. And of course for GOG to sell a lot of AA games, hence getting the offer to publish more.

These kinds of fan fiction games are the only thing left to make given that Tolkien is, uhm, dead. But a Middle Earth game in which they're not allowed to call Gandalf Gandalf, that's ... just not the right vibe.

From the moment the game was first announced the only thing I was ever thinking to myself was: "What's the point of this? Does this really need to exist?" Revolving an entire game around Gollum just never struck me as anything possibly interesting. *shrug*

I don't think that we need a thousand superhero movies and series to exist, but that's where we're going anyway. *shrugemoji*

At least with the Lord of the Rings franchise, I understand the desire to make more stories that are set in this world.

And a Gollum interquel was not the worst idea ... at least that's not what has ruined the game according to the critics.
From what it looks like that i've seen, i would wager this project was dumped on a new or lesser studio team, then shoved out the door ready-or-not with problems galore as a cash grab.

If you're considering getting this title, i'd say pass.

no, it is developed by Daedalic themselves. it is all in house. To make it worse, it has been in development for 4 years, it was supposed to be first released in 2021.
Lol, who was even asking for a game like this? Of all the awesome ideas for a LOTR/Tolkien video game, playing Gollum hiding from people would be very close to the bottom of the list.

By all counts, this always seemed to me as Daedalic's attempt at a "big boy title" that would have turned them into a proper AAA studio. Big license with several delays in an attempt to fix what has most likely been broken from the get-go. Gollum was Daedalic's gamble to become a more noteworthy studio beyond their point-and-click fame.

Which is all the sadder as I'd much rather have a point & click adaptation of the Hobbit in the style similar to Chains of Satinav than this game, even if it wasn't broken.

Breja:
I see what you mean, thanks for explaining. I guess I'm just not a big enough fan of the overall Tolkien world to worry about the context. Gollum seems like an interesting character or at least a good excuse to be running around a cave and that is as far as my thinking goes :/.
If you want to play as a foul and stealthy creature, I recommend the Styx games. They feel like Thief 3 in terms of gameplay, but without the jagged edges. Styx 1 has the better story, while Styx 2 is more enjoyable to play.
I'll never know why they haven't made just a straight Fellowship RPG, Legolas (Ranger), Aragorn (Ranger/Fighter), Gandalf (Wizard), Frodo (Rogue), etc.

I guess because making decent AA-AAA RPG is very complex task, and yet they couldn't handle properly even much simpler and smaller project. Besides why not? At least on paper concept wasn't bad. I would probably prefer playing Gollum done right than some janky RPG.

What is mystery for me is how they got LOTR license - which doesn't seem to be thrown left and right like e.g. Warhammer; quite contrary - in the first place. Wasn't Daedalic on verge of bankruptcy in last few years?

Daedalic was sold off to Nacon last year.
Development on Gollum maybe was already too far along and the release window set in stone at this point for Nacon to course-correct by injecting another million or two for more quality-control and -insurance.

I guess what I'm saying is, the Fellowship were basically the original inspiration for the D&D style RPG party, but we've actually yet to see a video game about them.

If I'm not mistaken, Nacon also got Cyanide Studio, the developer of Styx. But it might be that Cyanide is busy with another projects.
