Time is (of) the essence

Braid, the subversive, time-manipulating platformer with the evocative story, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 50% launch discount.

It's been played, studied, and thoroughly discussed. Some praise its brilliant time-bending mechanics that make each level a complex gauntlet of puzzle-platforming delight. Others debate the deliberately obscure story that deals with personal redemption, broader philosophical themes, and meta-commentary on gaming's conventions.

Everybody recognises it as a masterfully crafted experience that put Jonathan Blow in the spotlight and helped usher the golden age of indies. If you haven't tried it, now is your chance to turn back time and give it a spin. Your future self will surely thank you for it.

Catch up on a timeless classic and untangle the brilliant challenges of Braid, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until May 18, 12:59 PM UTC.

In the press:
"Diabolically clever and incredibly rewarding" - Giant Bomb
"Beautiful, entertaining, and inspiring" - Eurogamer
"An instant indie classic" - Total PC Gaming

Robette: Good game, ridiculous pricing. I would have expected it to enter GOG with a 85-90% sale.
Me to , i narliy forgot the game released today, i guess its because i have the game, normally i am waiting staring at the clock till it arrives, (like i did when kathy rain was released and all other point and click adventures (no fpp/3d ofcourse) but now i simply forgot almost about the release today.

i dont know, but maybe nelly cootalot 2 would have done much better (19.99 listprice) and with 25% of making it 14.99 i guess it would sell better then this game that almost the entire world seems to have.
Anyway i have a strange feeling nelly cootalot 2 will arrive here someday at GoG :D
!Arrg shiver me timbers ...!!

babark: For some reason, only the Humble Store has a cheaper default price...Blow probably has some deal with them, I guess?
avatar
ZaineH: Buy it on Humble instead. As it has been pointed out, it's base price is $5 cheaper.
avatar
PaterAlf: While the full price on Humble Store is €8.00?
The game is currently going for $14.99 on Humble, at least in the US: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/braid

LOL. They probably changed its price in reaction to complaints here.

The point is, it's not a conspiracy to screw GOG customers, it's the MSRP for the game on PC, Mac and Linux. It's the same base price on the big three: GOG, Steam and Humble. The places where it's cheaper are probably an oversight. It's fine if people don't want to pay the full asking price or even half that, but there's no need to demonize anyone.

CharlesGrey: Might want to try Chronology. It's pretty short, but a nice game.

Thank you for the suggestion, I was unaware of it. Unfortunately, it's Windows-only.

Hah hah, indeed, it would appear so they did. How strange is that? It's quite normal for base prices to decrease over time, but an increase of its base price, after a game has already been out for years and has been sold for almost nothing on various occasions... ?

Maybe the dev is hurting for money, because The Witness wasn't the commercial success they were hoping for? ( Not surprising either, all things considered. )
The game is good, so I'll rebuy it on GOG when it is less than 3$ during a sale (own about 3 copies elsewhere and all of them were cheaper than the launch discount here). 15$ regular price is... ambitious...

Ah, that's too bad -- you use Linux or something? I have yet to mess around with Linux myself, but couldn't you run the game in WINE or whatever it's called? Anyhow, it's a nice little game. Its content only lasts for one or two play sessions really, but it's very charming and fun while it lasts.

sebarnolds: Price seems indeed high for such an old game. And no OST while it is available in the various bundles it was in seems a bit harsh.

I was not very impressed by the game either and had to use a walkthrough in the end...

amok: Had to use a walkthrough because you were not impressed?
I was not very impressed the game and I got stuck. As I lost interest in the game, I used a walkthrough to progress.

Yeah, that was pretty weird. Earlier today (when I made my post), it showed the base price (no sale or anything) as being $9.99.
Nice to finally see this game here.

What makes you say that? From what I've read months ago it sold enough to generate around $5 million in revenue in the first week, not to mention that PS4 sales were comparable to PC sales. Unless something else was stated by Blow this game was successful as far as sales go.
The game was a huge success but Blow invested all his profits into making The Witness.
Perfectionism has come at a great and quantifiable cost. The money is—for now, at least—all gone. The Witness cost close to six million dollars, vastly overshooting Blow’s original budget of eight hundred thousand dollars. When Braid’s profits ran out, he borrowed funds from a friend. “Most people would have felt the need to finish the game much earlier than I did,” he said. “It’s absurd how much I spent, really. But I was willing to put it all in the poker pot and make the thing I wanted to make, without interference, without someone telling me I needed to make everything purple, or something else.” Few of indie gaming’s other success stories have been willing to put everything back into their next project, he said pointedly. “Or maybe some of those games just aren’t out yet.”

I didn't keep close track of it, but I remember there were some threads here a while back about how the game ( The Witness ) had a high piracy rate, and about how its performance on Steam was kinda underwhelming. Wasn't that one of the reasons Blow changed his mind about even releasing it here? I seem to remember his original attitude regarding GOG was along the lines of "Either they accept my terms, or my games won't be released there. I have other options, and don't need them."... ?
