Cat scratch fever!

Legend of Kay Anniversary a remastered release of the PS2 action-platforming classic, is available now for Windows and soon to Mac OS X, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 10% launch discount.

From the PlayStation 2, through the Nintendo DS, and straight onto your personal home computer. The Legend of Kay returns with a completely remastered experience thanks to high resolution textures, high-poly models, modern rendering techniques and surround sound - but with all of the same level design and gameplay you may already know and love. Kay is cat. But not the cute and fuzzy kind of kitty cat, he's the leap around slashing and slaughtering gorillas kind of ninja kitty cat. Back when it was just released, the Legend of Kay was lauded for its satisfyingly dynamic combo based combat, as well as smooth, fast and super responsive controls. As it turns out, with just a few updates the gameplay holds up just as well as it ever did, and this one is a must-have for anyone with a knack for a varied and skill-based mix of combat and platforming.

The PS2 classic returns in Legend of Kay Anniversary, available DRM-free on GOG.com! The 10% launch discount will last for one week, until Tuesday, August 4 at 12:59 PM GMT.

tinyE: So what is this, a game about a tiger that goes door to door selling cosmetics?
avatar
IAmSinistar: Not enough pink.
Thank god someone got that joke. :P

Elmofongo: Well, in my cave there were enough other consoles, already...Sony
Ratchet and Clank are gods among men.

Too bad know one talks about them.

Heck in the internet. No one talks about games from the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era that much.

Elmofongo: Everyone and their mothers owned a PS2, thats how huge the console was. Even though personally the original Xbox was the superior console. So much that I wished alot of games made for the PS2 were built from the ground up for Xbox.
Everything else at the time was far superior, the PS2 wasn't just weaker than the other consoles of the time, the architecture was (much like the PS1 before it) utter, sloppy garbage. Garbage that held back the potential of the GC and Xbox due to it being the popular platform. It, along with Sony as a whole, didn't deserve the success it achieved. At all.

I too can only imagine how many games it played host to that would have been so much better on the Xbox or Gamecube.

Also Ratchet & Clank is infinitely better than Jak & Daxter.

RadonGOG: ...i´d say that high resolution textures isn´t something that should be used in advertisement---neither in GOGs nor in your own! If there is one thing this remaster clearly lacks it´s highres textures! (My judgement is based on the vid as well as on the shots)
avatar
IAmSinistar: Hmm, they look plenty crisp to me. But maybe we're using different personal metrics for the term "high res". :)
That´s probably the case. Just a comparision I´d hand in a "random" pic from Jade Empire found via images.google:

Jup, that first one is JadeEmpire. 2007. Remaster of the XBOX 1-Version for PC, but nothing that was or is well-known for it´s textures! But this one´s textures here got less quality, but the games is still advertised with them!

Rachet and Clank were more smoother when it got more "Edgy?, more for older audiances" where as going from Jak 1 to 2 and its such a contrast.

I will admit some PS2 games still hold up graphically. I mean look at Resident Evil Outbreak, Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy 12, Rachet Deadlocked (Gladiator)

But man what I give to see Final Fantasy 12, GTA San Andreas, Metal Gear 3, and Shadow of the Colossus built from the ground up for Xbox.
Will it work with DirectX 10?

Falkenherz: I still have this game as part of my PS2 collection, though I haven’t played it yet (like a lot of other games in that collection, like FFXII, Shadow of the Collossus, or Okami). I guess I should hook up my PS2 again sometime soon.
avatar
IAmSinistar: You most certainly should play Shadow of the Colossus and Okami, those are two of the finest games I ever played on my PS2.
I definitely want Shadow of the Colossus and Heavy Rain PC versions, pleeeeeease, pretty please!!!

Also, insta-wishlisted :)

I'd love a PC release of Shadow of the Colossus, especially here on GOG. Ditto with their other title, Ico.
anyone played legend of gay and can recommend it?

is it good compared too the classics like rayman 3?
I think that CDproject ought to commission the porting of various console titles to the PC, with an exclusivity period on GOG. There is a large back catalog of console games that have proven their quality, and odds are that the work assets have been retained for later remastering. Persona 3 & 4, Etrian Odyssey, Okami, Wrath of Asura, and the Phoenix Wright series would be my picks.

There are definitely some very good looking games on the PS2 despite the horrible hardware, but that's due to people spending so much time developing for it. When given enough time and talent you can create art with bad tools (in fact Okami's art style is a result of exploiting a rendering bug). Knowing that though it's still painfully obvious how much more could still be done on the other more deserving systems. It's even more obvious if you start emulating PS2 games and have to work around some of the limitations, like the completely non-standardized interlacing and horrible full screen filters because the thing couldn't anti-alias properly.

It's a pity that developer is basically shackled to Sony, and even if Sony did PC games you know they'd be Steam only. At least there's emulation if you want to see SotC in 1080p.

That's a completely different game.

Sadly likely. One can still dream, though. :)

There are so many older console games I'd like to see ported out to PC. The Fatal Frame series, for one.

I've played a good number o' hours. It's not really comparable to Rayman 3 as it's all about the melee combat, which feels a bit like a spectacle fighter for younger audiences, with flashy strikes and smooth movements. it's not very difficult but it is very fluid and fun. The platforming is solid too as the controls and physics feel spot on.

The only things I could knock are that the occasional environmental puzzle feels a bit mundane and voice acting can be pretty bad.

And that one's owned by Nintendo now.

Though in this instance I don't mind, have you seen Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water? I can't think of a better way to play FF than using the Wii U gamepad as the Camera Obscura. I can't wait.
