The road to redemption.

Blade & Bones, an combat-driven action/RPG about a warrior fighting to reclaim the voice of his people from a vengeful god, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 5% launch discount.

Legends speak of Niro, the god that created the Orins and then cast them down in anger. As punishment for their defiance, he took away their voice, forcing them to communicate with others through four signs that express different emotions. Now the Orins will challenge their god once again, but for that they must gather the seven swords of legend.
Their combat skills will be put to the test again and again: timing and patience are key when alternating between light and heavy attacks or switching between the six different styles. The warriors can also perform dynamic body transformations called Kuros, or call upon the power of the relics they find in their travels. Depending on the time of day or the Kuros they can transform into, the Orins will be able to open up new areas or hidden passages across the open world, claiming secret weapons and items that will aid them in their quest.

Perfect your combat skills, claim the seven lost swords, and learn the secrets of Blade & Bones, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 5% launch discount will last until December 14, 9:59 PM UTC.

CharlesGrey: His point was probably, if it's only 5% then why bother with a release discount at all? And for that matter, what's the point of Day 1 discounts to begin with? Why not simply adjust the base price to what they think their game is worth? Unless they're trying to lure people into a rushed purchase while the discount is still on... In which case, 5% off fails to achieve that.
You are correct sir.

paladin181: Looks like combat was loosely inspired by Dark Souls. Very loosely. I dunno. The game looks like it will be a frustrating mess until they tighten up the controls a bit and give you more direction then: You just walked out of a cage. HERE YOU GO!!
Not giving you much direction sounds very Dark Souls like, hah hah. And I don't really trust anyone but From Software to successfully pull off their trademark combat system. If it's just going to be a second ( or third? ) rate copy, then I'd rather see developers come up with something of their own.

To be fair, there was Oscar the knight and the crestfallen soldier in Dark Souls who gave you an idea of where to start. This game, you walk out the door, and there you go into a huge open field. EDIT: There weren't many wide open areas in DS. Also the stupid AI of your escort puts him directly in the line of the harm he seemed so terrified of. "Hey can you help me get to the next town? I'm terribly afraid I'll die.... I'm going to hang as close as possible to you while you wave that sword around trying to kill that other guy."

Without having played it, I think it's the main problem of the game. I saw the let's play video posted above and well, the combats feel more like a generic 3D beat-em-all than the "body awareness" of the Souls series. Furthermore the artistic direction is unpersonal as this style of assets (grass, trees, the bridge, etc.) can be found by dozens on the Unity asset store.

At this point, I think the devs should have been better off working on a 2D game (like a metroidvania) as it would have brought more importance in mechanics, level design and custom art direction rather than working in 3D which requires more money/time to reach even one area of a Souls game.

EDIT: "Salt And Sanctuary" was a good example of overcoming a much restrained budget.

catpower1980: PS: Does anyone remember the name that recent 2D game (mostly in grey color) which was heavily inspired in all aspects by the Dark Souls? I can't remember it :(
Salt and Sanctuary?

Aramandur: Salt and Sanctuary?
Yep, I just googled "2d dark souls" and that was it :o)
The art style looks good, but having heard nothing about this game before I think I'll wait for a few reviews before committing.

Vythonaut: It's a new release; how much discount would you want it to have?

CharlesGrey: His point was probably, if it's only 5% then why bother with a release discount at all?
Hmmm, here's a couple I can think of:

a. Marketing reasons; even if it's a low discount, it still IS a discount and you probably know how discount/free labeling works in our subconscious -- not in everyone's mind of course, but it works.

b. The game will be featured in those "find gaming deals" websites. Free advertising, right?

CharlesGrey: And for that matter, what's the point of Day 1 discounts to begin with?
Day 1 discounts may show a lack of confidence in one's product. It may also be an effort to attract folks who don't buy anything at full price at all (the subconscious thing that I spoke about before). Personally, when I see Day 1 discounts (especially when they are big), I look into the product very carefully -- companies that know their product is good and have confidence that it will sell good, usually don't discount too much/too soon.

CharlesGrey: Unless they're trying to lure people into a rushed purchase while the discount is still on...
Maybe that's what is all about in some cases. The same is done in preordering; you get -10% discount for something that does not exist (therefore you can't really make an informed purchase) plus they lure you with some in-game items (=useless stuff, usually without any real value unless it is an artbook, soundtrack etc.). It's way worse than a -5% launch discount, unless you trust a particular developer.

CharlesGrey: Why not simply adjust the base price to what they think their game is worth?
Hmm, maybe in the age of massive discounts and frequent sales, they look after how much money will they earn when their product gets a -75% price cut? I mean, they may think the price should really be €10 (€2,50 in a massive sale) but they inflate it a bit to, say, €13 (€3,25 in a massive sale) because €0,75 extra revenue is nicer. And before you say that more people would buy it if it cost €10, think about how much we crave for sales and discounts. Without having any real numbers to backup my claims, I believe that in most cases, games sell much more copies when discounted, rather when not discounted at all (unless we talk about successful IPs). It could also be that I'm totally wrong on that. :P

This looks interesting. Wishlisted for now.
This looks really pretty and sounds interesting, wishlisted.

Not a bad price either, despite the bizarre pointless discount.
Based on Steam reviews (currently "mixed," for whatever that's worth), this game has a life system, and when you run out, your save file is erased. I know some people enjoy permadeath, but for me that's an absolute deal-breaker. Too bad, I really like the art in the screenshots.

I enjoyed that whole post, but the above point stood out as very well made.
