Maxvorstadt: Well, if a game constantly throws encounters at you that you can`t survive, then something is wrong with the game. You surely had much luck in this game.
Right lol...You can't survive em, many people can. Your ineptitude is not bad luck.

Well, I tried many times, but there was really no chance. It`s totally random what happens in this game.

Cyraxpt: I was refering to the gameplay in the sense of top view, click to where you want to go, having multiple ships and upgrading the ship (i think that SPAZ had that, it has been a while).
SPAZ was about technology you knew and Rez. If you had the technology and the Rez you could easily upgrade everything because it's built at your mothership and then sent in via a portal. That's going to be vastly different from individual items you purchase and equip.

SPAZ also you had something like 6 hangers where you could have ships usually of up to different sizes, as well as for different purposes. You'd control 1 ship while the rest run on AI that you can send off to do something or have them hover near you and fight with you. Lose one and another one is made and sent to join you a few moments later (if you wanted them to auto build)

This is almost like saying using a bow and arrow is a useless weapon because you can't hit a target on your first day of practice. It's a skill and refining what you are doing to make fewer mistakes and make better decisions. When you are skilled the game completely changes.

micktiegs_8: I died because I was too stubborn to retreat... oops. I'm too embarrassed to say what killed me, exactly.

AdmiralGeezer: A black hole sector? :)
Nope. I jumped to a normal sector with just one bad guy (about the same size as me). He had a long range homing missle which my lazer could take care of, however he also had a faster non-guided physical weapon that I couldn't block in time. He was basically kiting me the whole time and I kept chasing.
Learning is fun :p

retreat a lot. Find weaker enemies. Use the wait command if you see an enemy coming to you. Use beacons to draw in surrounding enemies. Do quests.

Uhm, we talked about FTL. Sorry for OT, but in FTL these actions aren`t possible! :-)

I will admit FTL is highly random, but there is a lot of skill and learning involved too. It's not impossible, I've beaten it at least three times (might have been five, I can't remember).
If you land a lucky weapon or a lot of scrap early it helps, but I've made it to the last sector countless times on 'bad' runs where I've struggled to upgrade systems, repair or get new weapons. You just need to know what you're doing and which upgrades to go for.

Beating the boss on the other hand is ridiculous. Particularly after the Advanced Edition made it even harder...
You really do need a lucky run (or a really cheesy ship) to beat the boss.

This game on the other hand is nowhere near as complicated or tricky. It could possibly do with a bit more depth (the option to upgrade hull, shields and engines would be nice though perhaps the later ships have enough weapons slots to use shield boosters and things without reducing combat capabilities) but it's quite fun. Got to the last sector in a run but got trapped between two sectors full of enemies and lost my ships (with not enough scrap to replace them).
I can see it being one I keep coming back to though, like FTL.

Oh haha! Who cares if someone says you're 'inept' because you can't play a punishing game as well as they can. It's a game for cryin out loud lol.
I beat the boss once on FTL and couldn't make it to him a second time ever since the big upgrade to the game was made. I had no strategy, and would just play as I saw fit... the random nature would either help me greatly to the point where I was near invincible, or it would leave me with no chance in hell. Got kinda boring and lost interest.
Meh, just throw it in the backlog and come back some other time. If not, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of tips on YouTube... I always find something for games I might have trouble with :)

No it isn't. If it were, I and other people could not win consistently.

Can you tell me the cheatcode? :-)

The is a fun thread in the FTL subforum where a Zoidberg claimed that the game is all luck based. He got thoroughly proven wrong with tons of strategy tips and a guy doing 20 wins in a row on camera. Of course, him being Zoidberg, he still refused to apologize.
(his name is actually Zoidberg, this is not just some sort of nerdy insult)
Just noticed; the GOG Release calls it Battlestation: Harbinger (and the link there to the gamecard is dead); while the game card calls it Battlevoid: Harbinger

(Obviously a minor thing, but now at least both names are in the thread; might help someone searching at some point...)
