Just remember that death is not the end

Barony: Cursed Edition, a first-person dungeon-crawler that throws you inside a treacherous labyrinth, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 30% launch discount.

If someone's been a pain in the backside while alive, you can bet they're going to be impossible after death. Such is the story of Baron Herx, who's come back as an undead lich, forcing your hero to dive into his lair and dispose of him for good. Thing is, the Baron is holed up inside a hardcore, procedurally-generated dungeon full of sinister traps and monsters, hidden passages, cryptic messages, and heaps of shiny loot. Frantically narrated perma-death lurks around every corner, but don't die alone - grab your friends and go about it in an up-to-4-player-co-op fashion.

Delve into an underground complex full of unpredictable dangers in Barony: Cursed Edition, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 30% discount ends May 17, 12:59 PM UTC.

Bookwyrm627: Did anyone else look at the screenshots and go "Is this Doom in the Minecraft engine??"
At first I thought this was a 90s game running on the doom or ultima underworld engine and I somehow missed it.

Lodium: Sometimes i really dont get the comment section in gog.
Can anyone more smart than me explain why this game is shit just because its indie meanwhile stardew valley got pretty much overall positive reactions and thats a indie too.
is there something im missing here?
Procedural generation vs handcrafted content.
Permadeath vs obvious progress and reward.
Vomit-inducing terrible 3d vs beautiful pixel art.

"Indie" means developer-owned. Nothing about it either precludes or guarantees quality. Do you even play videogames? Because your incredulity that two different videogames aren't mutually interchangeable makes me think your grandnephews and -nieces secretly hate you.

amok: One More Dungeon is really bland, it has no character. Barony is a better game, and much more depth and playability. It so a quite decent game, to be honest, to a bit hard to get into initially.

Tyrrhia: I was talking about the art style. Since I haven't played either of these games, I can't really say anything about their gameplay.

Barony uses a lot of similar grey textures (according to the screenshots, at least) and it looks like there aren't any shadows apart from the black fog of war, so it really could look better. Also, some icons don't have the same art style as everything else, so they feel out of place, especially in this screenshot (look at the hotbar icons, it's one of the reasons I don't find it polished): https://images-4.gog.com/ec70cb8f03d0eff39697376b2860b7304f67217701becabab051963ca20b0e08.jpg
One More Dungeon is a lot more colourful and there aren't any inconsistencies, everything fits with the atmosphere of the game. But it's really similar to Delver, though it seems this one is currently in development hell.
If you go for graphics alone when playing games.....

And deliver is not in development help, it is just a rather slow process. It is a single developer doing it in the spare time. Even then, it is already at this stage very fun
Every time an indie game is released and people don't like it there's a select few "users" who rabidly defend it. Wish GOG would force people to identify themselves as developers because it's hard to believe someone with no dog in the fight would get so butt hurt over people's opinion

With that said, it looks like a crappy minecraft mod. Also trying to capitalize off of namedropping Ultima/ System Shock is messed up.

Which off course makes Half-Life and Dragon Age indie games... anyway....

Have you played Minecraft?

Falkenherz: If the graphic style bothers you too much, then there’s nothing to be done about that, I guess.
I was actually thinking of waiting for a HD edition with improved graphics, if such comes out at some point. Maybe it will have fully polygonal textured 3D characters, EAX audio etc.!
They must use a masterpiece of an engine to get that graphics quality and crowded game-play out of the system requirements. :P

How is the save game function implemented? Is there one?

This is the HD edition. :P
The cursed edition apparently changed the graphics.

For worse, or better?

Maybe we need a HDD version then.
btw attacking this game for the graphics' style does not make you look cool. Quite the opposite.
Perhaps you guys would like to make a similar game with a different style of graphics, then sell it here and let the people see what you can do?

This thread still off track... :)
Not cool, guys. :|

While I agree that the style looks somewhat inconsistent, the game itself could be fun. Price point seems decent, as well. Going to wait for some proper reviews to see if it's worth picking up.

Really? We've reached that level of argumentation?

Nobody here is saying they can do a better job than the developers did. What they are saying is that other developers have made plenty of games more compelling than this, and it's inexplicable why we're mired in this kind of junk week after week when those superior games are still out there.

amok: If you go for graphics alone when playing games.....
Not at all. And that's why I force myself to use "art style" instead of "graphics" when it comes to something that was intended to look different than the ultra-realistic AAA releases.

I don't care at all about bad graphics (i.e. aliasing, ugly textures, etc.), especially when other stuff like story and gameplay are interesting. I do care about art style, though, because it is part of a game's soul. And I do find that Barony's art style is lacking something, and absolutely not because of the fact that it uses low-resolution assets (I can find low-resolution and even ASCII-based games appealing).

If I went for "graphics" alone when playing games, I wouldn't play very many since the immense majority of the games I've played were indie games that looked different than AAA games and not-so-realistic.
