Just remember that death is not the end

Barony: Cursed Edition, a first-person dungeon-crawler that throws you inside a treacherous labyrinth, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 30% launch discount.

If someone's been a pain in the backside while alive, you can bet they're going to be impossible after death. Such is the story of Baron Herx, who's come back as an undead lich, forcing your hero to dive into his lair and dispose of him for good. Thing is, the Baron is holed up inside a hardcore, procedurally-generated dungeon full of sinister traps and monsters, hidden passages, cryptic messages, and heaps of shiny loot. Frantically narrated perma-death lurks around every corner, but don't die alone - grab your friends and go about it in an up-to-4-player-co-op fashion.

Delve into an underground complex full of unpredictable dangers in Barony: Cursed Edition, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 30% discount ends May 17, 12:59 PM UTC.
It looks bland and not really polished enough for the base price, even though it recently got a huge update.

One More Dungeon is a bit more than half the price, but it looks better and way more polished overall.
Sometimes i really dont get the comment section in gog.
Can anyone more smart than me explain why this game is shit just because its indie meanwhile stardew valley got pretty much overall positive reactions and thats a indie too.
is there something im missing here?

Indie Tuesday has just become the worst.

Look, GOG. It's not like there aren't any good games to release.

Edit: Here, I'll even throw you a softball: Stellaris.

Has anyone tried this game yet? I've read that it got mixed reviews. But it looks similar to Delver.
Another FPS with procedurally-generated levels, permadeath, and deliberately eye-punching low-res voxels.

It's like you took everything I don't like about PC games and combined them into one.

Good on you guys who enjoy it; I hope it's great.

I'll be in the corner screaming about "Gemcraft" being rejected.

fortune_p_dawg: This game is actually pretty excellent and has a nice sense of atmosphere.
Finally, someone who does not bash this game. :D
If there's one thing that's the biggest turnoff for me in games today is the combination of the "features" of perma-death and randomly (procedural) generated levels, mainly because the majority of games with them are poorly executed. While I have been pleasantly surprised by the odd exception (something like Spelunky or Rogue Legacy) it's hardly the norm.

blotunga: I'm not a graphics whore, but for a game released in 2015 it does look like it should've been released in 1995.
avatar
Maxvorstadt: Exactly! That was exactly the same I wanted to say! A game with graphics from 1995 and system requirements from 2016 or even 2020.
Not acceptable!!
Agreed. The amount of lazy coding practices present these days is just baffling.

I'll support you if gemcraft manages 60 fps. :p

One More Dungeon is really bland, it has no character. Barony is a better game, and much more depth and playability. It so a quite decent game, to be honest, to a bit hard to get into initially.

Having said that, the best two games Barony can be compared to is Delver (http://www.delvergame.com/) and Eldrithch (http://www.eldritchgame.com/), but since neither are here on gOg, I guess Barony is the next best choice.

Vythonaut: I guess it has to do with the engine they used to develop the game; I don't know much about game engines but it is logical to me that Hexen II & Barony engine have nothing in common, even if the result is somewhat comparable. Also, keep in mind that games back then were supposed to look like that (pixel art) because that was the state of the art technology back then (also keep in mind the specs of PCs back then too!). Nowadays pixel art is not needed but it is designed on purpose; it's just an artificial way to look retro by using modern game engines, hence the high system requirements.

Anyone who has more knowledge in this matter, please correct me if I'm wrong. ;)
Well no one's saying that this game is (or should be) using the Quake engine, (as opposed to whatever this is using -- perhaps Unity 5 or UE4), but if you're going to demand 8 GB of RAM for a game that looks...well, the way it does, I think there are some questions that should be asked about how well you've optimized your game, and how much you should really care about it.

Now Eldritch is a really fun game! I hope GOG will get it someday. Here is the wishlist!

I was talking about the art style. Since I haven't played either of these games, I can't really say anything about their gameplay.

Barony uses a lot of similar grey textures (according to the screenshots, at least) and it looks like there aren't any shadows apart from the black fog of war, so it really could look better. Also, some icons don't have the same art style as everything else, so they feel out of place, especially in this screenshot (look at the hotbar icons, it's one of the reasons I don't find it polished): https://images-4.gog.com/ec70cb8f03d0eff39697376b2860b7304f67217701becabab051963ca20b0e08.jpg
One More Dungeon is a lot more colourful and there aren't any inconsistencies, everything fits with the atmosphere of the game. But it's really similar to Delver, though it seems this one is currently in development hell.

Delver is amazing.

MBiL_248: You miss the point. Of course GOG is allowed to release every crap they want - but in the past they've declined a couple of interesting and well-known titles, saying they were too nichy.
And they're never going to live that one out as long as you're alive, are they? How dare they deny your gaming preferences!

avatar
MBiL_248: That's not the game's own forum, but a an official GOG release thread, so I think it's reasonable to give GOG staff some feedback about it. But let us not exaggerate. :-)
That's the point. You can communicate better PM'ing them and directly asking them to give another look at whatever game you feel should have a place here. Poisoning the thread does nothing to help your cause and over time might brand you as a "complainer" and someone who is never happy. Nobody likes people who are like that.

It is also not fair to Barony's devs, regardless of how good or bad their game is.

Yeah, I've played an alpha of it a couple years ago and it was a lot of fun! I keep hoping GOG will get it someday. :P
