Anno 1404 Gold Edition, the city-building RTS set during the dawn of the Renaissance, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 33% launch discount.

Arguably, the course of human history and our cultural footprint are mainly defined by a constant drive for discovery and evolution. But would these fine qualities even exist if they were not prompted by our insatiable hunger for power and financial gain?

Anno 1404 Gold Edition speaks of a time when large-scale endeavors like the Crusades, the hanseatic trade, and the ushering of the Renaissance provided numerous opportunities for business and conflict between rising powers. You, as the newly appointed ruler of a fictional fiefdom, are in the perfect position to seize these opportunities and become a prominent player in this tug of war. Efficient trading and fearless exploration across the globe will be your bread and butter, but should circumstances call for conflict, your combat readiness will also be tested on both land and sea. You must manage your population, build majestic gothic cathedrals, and expand your influence in both the Occident and the Orient, as you become one of the pioneers of capitalism.

Build and expand your empire by trading goods and blows with foreign kingdoms in Anno 1404 Gold Edition, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 33% discount will last until January 19, 1:59 PM GMT.
Awesome, insta-wishlisted. I didn't expect this to come to GOG so soon.
I really like the game, but very bad move GOG for introducing a game with DRM even if you say otherwise. Also, you could be honest and report the needs of Uplay for multiplayer in the news.

I guess you didn't notice this, right?

I enjoyed the previous anno purchases. I imagine i'll enjoy this one aswell.

eiii: The only minor complain I have is that you cannot move the camera completely free in this game. You can't change zoom rate and viewing height independently of each other as you can in many modern 3D applications.
To be honest, I prefer the more "traditional" camera movement. Not only in Anno but in nearly every strategy game that doesn't take place in space. I think it is faster & easier to navigate that way. But anyway, check out the following trick:

Great release!

JudasIscariot: You should be able to play the game via LAN without needing anything.
This is what I thought would be possible and with some VPN tunnel like Tunngle, Hamachi or GameRanger you could play LAN through the net so no UPlay account should be required.

I've got the physical and it doesn't need Uplay. They even patched out the original DRM for it a long time ago. LAN works as all old LAN games used to work, simply and easily.
Sorry, if I misunderstood anything. I'm just reading words.
edit: oh derp! I didn't read the gamecard haha!

That is true for the original Anno 1404 but they reintroduced the DRM with the Venice addon (for whatever reason).

I'd say they brought a patch out for it as well later on, because I have Anno 1404 gold which includes Venice. Nothing present.
edit: my mistake. I thought you were talking about DRM to be able to even play the game, not online multiplayer DRM. That should be a given, though.

Yep, missed that. The fact that they try really hard to not include those information in their news helped that.

Better! But preferences obviously differ. I did not expect this behavior to be configurable, but luckily it is. :) Thank you for the links!

Don't mention it! Cheers! :)

You mean like nearly every online MP enabled game on GOG right? They nearly all include either Galaxy, 3rd party accounts, or CD keys and have for a long time. At-least you got LAN with this one... it's been pretty clear for a long time though that GOG has never included online MP in their definition of DRM free.

This is by far not the first game to have what some people may consider DRM... I personally don't see it that way.

And bought. Thanks.

ShadowPatriarch: And speaking of old gems that are nowhere else to be found, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth I and II would be another awesome addition.

ShadowOwl: Probably stuck in license limbo since EA doesn't have the LotR movie license any longer.
True. A shame that. But one can still hope that this situation miraculously remedies itself.
