Anno 1404 Gold Edition, the city-building RTS set during the dawn of the Renaissance, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 33% launch discount.

Arguably, the course of human history and our cultural footprint are mainly defined by a constant drive for discovery and evolution. But would these fine qualities even exist if they were not prompted by our insatiable hunger for power and financial gain?

Anno 1404 Gold Edition speaks of a time when large-scale endeavors like the Crusades, the hanseatic trade, and the ushering of the Renaissance provided numerous opportunities for business and conflict between rising powers. You, as the newly appointed ruler of a fictional fiefdom, are in the perfect position to seize these opportunities and become a prominent player in this tug of war. Efficient trading and fearless exploration across the globe will be your bread and butter, but should circumstances call for conflict, your combat readiness will also be tested on both land and sea. You must manage your population, build majestic gothic cathedrals, and expand your influence in both the Occident and the Orient, as you become one of the pioneers of capitalism.

Build and expand your empire by trading goods and blows with foreign kingdoms in Anno 1404 Gold Edition, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 33% discount will last until January 19, 1:59 PM GMT.
I love this game
How does this compare to the older games? (one of the reviews on gog suggest using unofficial patch? is that needed?)

On Wikipedia, the unofficial patch is fan-made. Supposedly, Ubisoft released a last patch for the European version [Anno 1404] but not the North American version [Dawn of Discovery]. There is no difference between these versions except the name. The European version is rumored to have one more patch over the North American version. I believe the patches were to solve a save bug issue where some saves could end up missing and some grammatical errors for english localisation. I have Dawn of Discovery on Uplay and I haven't encountered any problems or bugs or missing saves, so in my opinion the fan made patch is not needed. Also note, that this might be the European version of the game since the title is Anno 1404, while on Uplay and Steam it's Dawn of Discovery.

Edit: The version numbers are different for Anno 1404 and Dawn of Discovery, I compared Dawn of Discovery: Venice v2.01.5 with Anno 1404 Venice v2.00.5

towerbooks3192: I love you GOG. I love this game. Like it is so beautiful and the setting is great. I wish that Ubi is gonna release 2070 here. I loved 2070 but Uplay ruined it for needing to be online 24/7 just to access your ark. I would understand the need to do it for multiplayer stuff but the ark storage is ridiculous.
Uplay is ridiculous. Do you play the original game or did you also get the DLC's? After you download the base game in your UPlay account, you can take it offline (thru settings). This way you play the game offline. Don't add DLC's since this will activate autopatching which will screw your settings and game.

This is my favorite of the Anno series. It looks and feels kinda like 1701 but with added population and trade route complexity. The Venice scenarios have a number of unique challenges and are quite enjoyable. The unofficial patch fixes a number of bugs/typos/translation issues. I use it but it's certainly not required. Would definitely buy it if I didn't already own it.

Got every DLC. It is sad that you still need to be online to access the ark upgrades and storage. Like it is just ridiculous when you don't have to interact with other people or something in order to use the ark and whatnot. I understand the point of council voting and stuff needing to be online but ark upgrade is just ridiculous.

MIK0: I really like the game, but very bad move GOG for introducing a game with DRM even if you say otherwise. Also, you could be honest and report the needs of Uplay for multiplayer in the news.

BKGaming: You mean like nearly every online MP enabled game on GOG right? They nearly all include either Galaxy, 3rd party accounts, or CD keys and have for a long time. At-least you got LAN with this one... it's been pretty clear for a long time though that GOG has never included online MP in their definition of DRM free.

This is by far not the first game to have what some people may consider DRM... I personally don't see it that way.
Folks are going to have to figure out what they want around here. Do they want GoG's library to grow or do they want to exclude any game that has an online multiplayer component.

We have to be persistent .. and edited my post ;)
The one game that really put me off the anno series. Or rather ubisoft did with their atrocious tages and limited activation and the like. Now it seems I can finally put that foul taste behind me.

I agree. Being a developer at Ubisoft must be frustrating.

I really wish that bluebyte will find another publisher or something. I feel so sad for them especially when ANNO is actually a good series. From what I heard, the latest one isn't going too well compared to 2070. It is also disappointing how HoMM series just went downhill after 3 and they made an HD edition that doesnt even include the full package.
Is the sale still going on?
