You’re in for a treat – we have some fun titles from HeartCoreDev! Synthetic Lover and The Symbiant are coming to GOG with amazing extras!

Synthetic Lover is a LGBTQ+ visual novel that takes place in 2066. Biologically engineered humanoids called “biots” make up a large percentage of the workforce; as a protagonist, you take up the role of one of the boots who, like the rest of his colleagues, lives to serve a single purpose: to fulfill his pre-programmed vocation. It’s a story about an individual who discovers the challenges of being a human, and during his journey navigates through the ups and downs of an imperfect life – learning to understand emotions, forming friendships, and possibly finding love along the way. Apart from the base game, you can enjoy the universe even further: through an Official Choice Guide, Artbook and an Official Soundtrack. All Synthetic Lover titles launch with a -25% discount; the offer ends on February 3, 3 PM UTC.

The Symbiant is, as well a LGBTQ+ visual novel, similarly set in a futuristic universe, in the year 5066. It’s a story of two men from entirely different worlds, embracing their newfound romance – Danya, the protagonist, after a troubled transport gig that left his and his friend’s beloved ship in a need of repair, receives a generous offer of transporting a mysterious alien calling himself Brahve. It is a tale of interstellar friendship and a quickly growing affection between two men. You can find even more content in a few extra titles: Game Choice & Achievement Guide, Artbook & CG Pack, and an Official Soundtrack. All The Symbiant titles launch with a -10% discount; the offer ends on February 3, 3 PM UTC.

If you still can’t decide, try out Synthetic Lover Demo and The Symbiant Demo!
People offended by/infuriated over the mere sight of something as easily ignorable as a banner on the front page best stay away from ALL digital distribution platforms for the whole of June, lest they pop an aneurysm or keel over from a heart attack.

people like you that don't understand that many users are disappointed from seeing GOG becoming a itch.io copycat and make thinly veiled accusations of homophobia instead of listening to our point will be perfectly happy to see this page turn into a shovelware distribution platform

lis: Sheesh, the bad faith of some people....

This is gay porn as is clearly stated on both games' store pages: NSFW, LGBTQ+, FREE Adult 18+ Patch, etc... Typically NOT what most people signed up on GOG for and have shoved on the main page!
avatar
MarkoH01: Well, it is a patch and you don't need to appy it so I doubt that these games are actual porn games. And I do agree, most people on GOG did not sign because of this stuff since back then it was not even available here. The question is if most of the GOGers would still sign up now that these games are here - and I am pretty sure that they would , since you still can get your games the same as before and all you'd need to do is to ignore whatever you dislike ... obviously this is too hard of a thing for some here. I really don't understand this. It is not as if they would show sexual intercourse directly on the front page. You get a pic of a game you dislike - nothing more. That's the end of the world or the end of GOG? Really?
But there are plenty of things to consider, no need to be upset, just because people don't like it.

E.g. GOG users who are still buying here, DESPITE the fact that there is published some gay porn games (I don't think that it's bad, that they're vocalizing that they're not happy that their favourite store is publishing content like this. And that it's somehow expressed - even if you're thinking it's meaningless. I don't.

. I mean, if you enjoy those kind of scenes, then I guess you're happy to buy it, but I'm not surprised, that some people are upset and their voice is giving some message (e.g. we don't like it, it's decision of the store against our, part of customers, preferences etc).

My stance is, that whoever is buying here anything, has right to tell what he likes and what not. including opinions, that GOG's store reputation is getting worse by releasing this stuff. Just try to live with it, that's what you're trying to advise to others, isn't it?

Of course I don't like it, and I am glad to see that I am not the only one. I think this is a poor strategic decision by CDPR that just wants to make a quick buck by jumping on the bandwagon of the latest trend,

MarkoH01: So reading isn't your strength? I said IGNORE, meaning allowing those who enjoy a certain genre of games their fun as well. All you have to do for this is to look the other way whenever you see a pic of a game you dislike . This has nothing to do with "f** off", it has to do with being tolerant for the needs and wishes of others as well instead of being egoistical. Sometimes I wonder how young the average GOG user really is ...
avatar
lis: Why should I ignore the fact that a site that i loved and have supported financially for almost 15 years (just as you, signed up in 2009) is completely ignoring its stated mission?

Let CDPR create a homo-kawaii page and put its "indie" shovelware there and keep GOG focused on.... good games?
ok, so.

you've been here for fifteen years.

in that event:

you've SEEN, and FIRST HAND, how gog's mission statement has sort of wobbled and changed over the years.

they started off as good old games. and they pedaled along doing that for a few years, then they swerved to serving more indie and sort of aa games. THEN, they started getting a bit of a trickle of aaa games.

i wouldn't say them swinging towards including more vn's [and specifically including more vn's that are geared towards a specific audience] is a particularly large shift in their mission statement.

it's still basically "let's sell some games."

that they're now selling more games with a broader reach is cool and good.

i promise: you'll still see the games you like and want here. it's just that now, 15 years on, gog are serving more audiences.

that's GOOD for you, in the long run. it means gog survives for [hopefully] the next fifteen years and KEEPS serving all sorts of games to all sorts of customers.

as i alluded to: gog gets games i'm just not into. when that happens, i shrug and just ignore those games.

you can do that too, it's really not that difficult.

MarkoH01: Read the description two times ... where is this porn? Seems to be more about love and romance and in my book that's not the same as porn.

I find it good that you are so open about your bigotry and insecurity.
Accepting ones faults is the first step to betterment.

Yes, but the problem is that nearly all threads with adult/ NSFW games end up getting derailed by general discussions about these games instead of talking about the new releases. It has been discussed to death already. There are also people who actually want to talk about the released games. They don't get the chance to do so. Just look at the last pages. Nothing deals with Synthetic Lover or The Symbiant.

morolf: You sure do like your sex games, don't you?
Is "Inside Jennifer" a good game? Does it have the kind of content you'd expect from the title?
I am sure I will regret that I answer honestly knowing that you usually just like to provoke ... but that's what I am and so an honest answer you will get:

The title "Inside Jennifer" is stupid as hell since most would expect another inside than what is meant here. Most also aren't aware that the original title of this game was "Corrupting Jennifer" which perfectly fits and which is the core of the game. "Being inside the person that is called Jennifer" is meant here ... maybe the devs thought, the lame wordplay would be a better choice. So in any case: I personally did expect a game in which I will get told a story about a more or less normal woman who will have to make several choices which will influence her story and her fate and how the story ends. It is hard to say if it is a "good" game since I am well aware that some people would not even consider a VN a "game" and also"good" is extremely subjective. The game has many, many choices. I played it once, watched the ending and then I changed the last choice and my ending was totally different. When I chose differently at the beginning the game offered me even more and more choices and I have no idea how much more there are. It is possible to unlock 13 endings and I guess I already unlocked 3. Making one different choice could lead you to completely new places and you might have to face ecen more extreme choices or outcomes. So since the core of the game is exactly this - making choices and see what happens and how bad it might be and how many facettes an apparently ordinary woman could have - I'd say it is good to achieve in what I expected. The game also offers a lot of quite different nsfw stuff which I of course expected as well. The fact that they not just show the story but also the thoughts of the people while doing certain actions or making certain choices adds an additional layer to it. I did not regret buying it one bit and I will also continue to play it to see how dep the rabbit hole (I am referring to Alice in Wonderland here just in case ...) actually goes :)

And just for the record: I don't like ALL sex games, it depends on the game ... as it is with every genre.

Thanks, but indeed i have seen my fair share of "ignorable" games on GOG. Actually sometimes it is even difficult to find a game i am interested in because the search engine is so inaccurate compared to Steam or itch.io

It's just that the releases that i consider interesting are getting fewer and fewer, while the main page gets filled with more and more content that I and, apparently, many others consider to be crap of a "new low" category and we are just voicing our discontent.

Now please realize that every 3rd reply on this thread telling us to "just ignore" it is basically asking us just to shut up if we're not happy.

In general the point is valid, but I'm suspecting (just my assumption), that there is not that much to discuss in case of this particular kind of game. or maybe I'll put it in other way - there may be something, but I wouldn't be surprised if actual buyers are not willing to discuss it publicly (or even admit, that they're buying it).

But yes, aside from that - general thought is wise, that any release topic should be first and foremost about games released,

(and since I've agreed with that posiion, I will refrain from further involvement in this topic, there are more interesting games to talk about ;))

Yeah, clearly a work whose writing is the same order of magnitude as an average novel, and which includes original character art, backgrounds, music, and full voice overs is shovelware... Doing all of that can require a lot more effort than your average unity indie game that just reuses the same old mechanics, this isn't some asset flip. This is also why it's not sold for half a buck or less, unlike itch.io amateur doodles and silly asset flip games.

My money is on that you're so prejudiced against something that you can't even be bothered to take a look at the thing you're so against before you declare it shovelware. I wonder what that something is..

Well, I'm tempted to say that this degree of angry complaints about games you don't like is a new low for the GOG community.. but, to be fair, the community has had issues for quite a while.

But one thing is for sure: the community was always split on GOG's curation. I've always been in the camp that the more DRM-free games there are, the merrier, and I've always been disappointed when GOG rejects games that their customers want. I don't think it's possible to reconcile these camps so we'll have to disagree forever.

MarkoH01:
Well, I admit I wanted to troll you, but thanks for the informative answer. Actually sounds like an interesting game (or visual novel), I like choices&consequences, branching storylines etc. Maybe I'll actually try one of those games myself some day (am getting older, don't feel like delving into complicated gameplay mechanics anymore, so starting to see the appeal of those visual novel type games). So thanks again for the honest answer. Unless my brainrot makes me forget it again, I will now stop trolling you.

i'm going to have to agree here. sometimes, the search engine's just not that great. [and often, i just bail to google and do the search from there, doing site:gog.com. it's sometimes more accurate.]

avatar

that does suck.

however, the part where you suggest "and apparently, many others" sort of needs a source you can cite.

as customers, we just don't have the data for this.

there must be a customer-base for it, or else gog wouldn't expand outward toward it.

finally: tastes are subjective, there's been vn's i've liked in the past. i understand that some folks don't consider games, but i'm happy to have those people making those games be able to tell their stories in the way that makes them happiest.

avatar
lis: Now please realize that every 3rd reply on this thread telling us to "just ignore" it is basically asking us just to shut up if we're not happy.
no one's said that so far.

what they've said is: "hey, when a release shows up here, that we don't like, we ignore it, you can do that, too."

i get it. you're unhappy with the direction the store sometimes goes. and that's cool. be unhappy. but not every game is made with every player in mind.

i don't know what games you're not into, but when those show up and they're not games like this, i expect you just shrug and skate by them, no problem.

this is like that.
