A Triple-A Ubisoft Digital Premiere

They may have been nearly lost since the late nineties, but they're very much alive in game design (and our fond memories) even to this day. Today's triple Digital Distribution Premiere from Ubisoft is not just a set of releases that start with the letter A, it's also a collection of games that introduced something new to their genre, offered a unique combination of playstyles and design choices, or tried something fresh and risky with great payoff.

All three releases are updated to work with Windows 10, and are available in a classic Ubisoft bundle at 20% off!

Anno 1602 A.D. is the one that spawned a series famed for its ambitious mix of real time strategy, business simulation and city building. It's a game that throws you, a pioneer of the unknown, into humanity's most far out frontier to colonise and conquer. Here, you'll find everything from exploration, trading, resource management, diplomacy and even combat - truly solidifying the experience of a true freedom to design your world, and the absolute control to do so your way. Anno 1602 A.D. includes Anno 1602: Creation of a New World and its expansion Anno 1602: New Islands, New Adventures.

Albion is a game that takes classic RPG and Dungeon Crawling, a healthy dose of humor, and risks its dangerous voyage far, far beyond earth into humanity's true final frontier. It's a deep-space adventure that draws bits and pieces from an unusual pairing of titles like The Elder Scrolls and Ultima - all to feature great looking 2D overworld exploration with detailed first-person 3D combat. Its most direct roots, however, stem from titles known as "Amberstar" and "Ambermoon" - two parts of an Amiga trilogy that never came to be concluded. Designed by the original team behind the Amiga classic, Albion is their true spiritual successor in everything but the name.

Archimedean Dynasty takes on one of humanity's biggest, most unfamiliar and inaccessible unknowns: the deep, dark sea. You'll pilot a state-of-the-art submarine to brave the depths and trenches of an underwater colony in turmoil. The bulk of the gameplay will be familiar to veterans of series like X-Wing or Freespace, but it's the absolutely unique setting and atmosphere that truly make this title worth remembering. Archimedean Dynasty soon spawned the AquaNox series, making today's release the final piece of a trilogy unique enough to truly earn a place on anybody's shelf.

Brave the distinct unknowns with the Anno 1602 A.D., Albion, and Archimedean Dynasty bundle, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com! The launch discount will last for one week, until Wednesday, August 5, 1:59 PM GMT.

Tranquil.Suit: I've played the original Anno 1602 back then as a kid, far from finished it. I've also played and (almost) finished Anno 1701 (got bored by the last mission).

My main peeve with the game(s) is that you're always building the same city. It's always the same building proces.

In Settlers (up to 4), it's about the optimum efficiency. So you have to pay attention to many details and adapt to the map, which makes it interesting.

In Tropico 1 (the best of the series), there is a lot of variety/choices for you banana repulic. Plus the razor edge politics keep you at the edge of your seat.

But in Anno, once you've passed the initial learning curve and have built a city to the end (citizens have highest rank), it's pretty much always the same.

That said, the initial learning curve is very fun. But don't expect deep strategy in this game.
Have a look at Anno 2070 then. There are two types of cities you can build in the game, and they're quite different in terms of how they work. One is very eco friendly, and the other is far more industrial.
Huh, I never noticed Driscoll was actually a tomboy (see attached screenshot). ;)

Anyway, awesome game. Thanks for making the re-release happen, GOG!

now this is one of those bunch of games which i don't really care if they made it to GOG or not. they've been on Abandonia for years now? and AFAIK Albion works with dosbox and minimal setup. Not sure about Archimedean but it was a somewhat recent addition to abandonia.

blotunga: Yay! More Ubisoft games. Maybe I should've waited for Heroes VI to come here :D
i hope not. IV sounds horrid. i wouldn't buccaneer it.
I only played the second Aquanox, and I really liked it. Are prequels good too? Albion looks interesting. Never heard of it before. I wishlisted it for now.

It seems to work fine. They are using a modified SVN Dosbox called SVN-Daum. I'm guessing that's the reason why.

Thanks for the pointer. I usually prefer to use system DosBox so this can be useful.

That link also says:

Archimedian dynasty works quite well with DOSBox version 0.72 / Ubuntu 8.10.
What works: Most of the game.
What does not work: The only thing that I found does not work is the display of the ship in the repair dock.

BillyMaysFan59: So I wonder when EA is going to do a comeback
Neverhood is on the long waiting list... And together with EA we need ActiVision.

IAmSinistar: Give in! Or at the very least, take a chance at winning them. :)
Maybe I will lol! BTW thanks for the link to your contest Sinistar, that's incredibly kind of you, I'll definitely participate.
It's been that kind of evening, work is ****, my car broke down on the way back as well tonight, and then I see link like yours in this great community. Really helps brighten up the day, thanks!
After mulling it over some I think I shall get Albion and Archimedean Dynasty. I wasn't entirely sure about the latter at first, but after reading up on it some more and watching a few gameplay/review videos it does very much look like something I could have a good time with. Anno looks decent enough, but I have enough games of its ilk in my backlog that I bought because I thought they looked interesting yet I never seem to be interested enough to actually play any of them. Heh. Might as well put that money towards Ziggurat. ;)

You point out there that it's different from the original (repackaged). Will it work with that port?
So, what is it about Albion that our German friends go crazy about it? :D
