What's the gameplay like when not in combat?

Sort of Sunless Seas lite?
I had a play around with this some time back. Graphically it’s nice. Game board was a bit limited, you have a square of sea with some highlights, and basically you need to do x of those highlights to open a gate to the next square. It is timed before the kraken comes. Combat felt slow and tedious though. Send crew member to this gun to fire, send that one to fix leak. More tactical than I like. I rather rock up in a tub and let rip with everything ala ac4.
I don’t say it’s a bad game, just not for me (or if you like more action orientated).

I actually like it less action-oriented. Does this game have tactical pause (in either/both modes - combat and sea travel)?

I forgot about that. I've been using a hack since they moved it to the bottom, and it's been on the top for me ever since. Don't remember which one/where I got it from, though.

I can’t be definate, if I remember right all actions are time based, so you have a time bar for a crew member to fire a cannon for instance. So you might be able to slow down time, but i don’t remember a pause.
Oh, and on the main map each time you move it takes time, so effectively paused until you move.

OK, thanks. So, main map pauses, but combat probably doesn't. I just thought of another game that definitely has tactical pause that this reminds me of, and I hate that game (FTL), so I guess I'll pass on this game either way.
I wonder if its anything like Sid Meier's Pirates. Is there anything other than ship battles? What do you do in the world map?

This bug (should I call it a feature?) is old as GOG itself - it has been here since its beginnings and never have been repaired.
I guess there is some underlying technical reason why it is not working as one would expect, otherwise they would have fixed it already.

It was a while ago, but each map has several “encounters” an amount of which you need to do to open gates to other maps. It may be ship battles, lighthouses, treasure, etc. Not a huge variety from what I recall, but not all ship battles.
Mostly it’s about getting out of the map before kraken arrives. I can’t actually remember the overall point of the game. I don’t think comparison to Sid Meiers pirates here is much use though.
Looks potentially interesting. Anyone knows if it just works on Ubuntu 16.04 or if that has actual issues, since only 18.04 is listed?

So battles using your ship but not necessarily against other ships. No trading? No looting other ships? No selling loot? I think you're right. Nothing like Sid Meier's Pirates.

You do get some loot. Yes don’t remember any trading as such, though you can buy upgrades and crew in towns.
It’s not a bad game, just not my type.
Heh, how does it compare to Pirates was my first question too, but I guess it was answered. And, either way, permadeath again, which implies save restrictions too. And timed, from what I see here. Now why do devs insist on these things?

Another question, why do the sails vanish at the start of the trailer? Strange to use an age of sail vessel without seeing, well, sails. (Also, used from Sea Dogs games to focus on ripping enemy sails to cripple them, and preserve mine. Gather that in this one they're irrelevant?)

The game has Linux support and looks good, but that kills it for me too.
