Guardians of the block

8-Bit Armies: Guardians, an extra faction added for FREE to the fast-paced RTS of blocky voxel mayhem, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and multiplayer.

Ready for more blocky soldiers and some sweet blocky explosions made by blocky war-machines? The free Guardians DLC has just been un-blocked and you can now expect to meet their structures, weapons, and well-trained units in the chaotic, 8-bit battlefields.

Scorch turrets, anti-air drones, snipers, grenadiers, siege artillery - there is even a spectre tank in there! No voxel is safe from these guys, not in Skirmish nor in Multiplayer. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and enlist them!

Unleash your 8-Bit Armies: Guardians upon strategically placed voxels, DRM-free on GOG.com.
While the basic concept looks good, the way Petroglyph is going around making/selling this game leaves much to be desired. This really should have started out as an Early Access title instead.

mrkgnao: Can someone who has the game please tell me if the new DLC is a separate box on your shelf, because MaGog cannot see any changes in the 8-bit armies file list to reflect a new DLC. If it's not a separate box, then GOG probably changed the game's library ID.

If anyone who has the game can upload his or her library to the wiki, MaGog will be most grateful.

JudasIscariot: There will be an update to the offline installer. No GameID changes or boxes on the shelf will be made or added. The update is already available via Galaxy.
Cheers. I should have thought of that.

Smannesman: On the one hand it's nice, on the other hand the game simply wasn't particularly complete to begin with.
I agree this should have been with the game and somewhat of a story on day one, Well let's see how this game does a year down road after all the missing content

The game is pretty clearly an "in development" game that decided not to advertise itself as such. Even its version number (0.73) points to that.
My goodness a new release on a weekend......... awesome !!
Looks fantastic. I have wishlisted it and will consider getting it during a sale. Going to look at a few reviews first.

Speaking of sales, aren't we due for another big sale soon ?

Oy. Clicked this to see whether anyone said whether there was any other Saturday release before, but in that case, and also considering the lack of a separate catalog entry, this is obviously an update, and to a beta at that, no reason to call it DLC, or the game released. GOG should have listed it as in dev regardless of what the dev says...

Yeah I seen that right after I purchased the damn thing and got a refund thank god. but yeah there is people a few here and a decent amount on steam that say "HAY this game is complete and feels great and polished" I am like if this is what complete is to people and they allow this more and more with other games I fear for the future of this medium.

Edit I like what they have going on I just feel one more year could have made this a HUGE release compared to now :(

Well because it is complete and very well polished, as in, it's not actually missing any advertised content and plays extremely well. It's also lacking in content, but that's not necessarily the same thing as unfinished, don't you think?

Hmm you prove a good point, But even though myself and a lot of others have major mixed feelings, Maybe it's due to we expecting in this day and age games that have some type of ground where if feels like it has a lot of content you know?. And when you get this it hits that area of hmm is this really complete even though it does feel polished.

hard to say man very hard

UnrealQuakie: hard to say man very hard
Very hard, actually. Petroglyph's previous release was Grey Goo - with epic story-based campaign, very CnC-esque gameplay, three reasonably distinct races... And while it wasn't a complete flop, it wasn't a great success either. So they spent this massive budget on creating fun, balanced races, expensive cinematics and voice acting and then some amazing post-release support (even adding a new race some time down the line) but... The game didn't really make a huge amount of money.

So I'd assume they just wanted to try something different for a change - release a bite-sized, cheap RTS and monetize it trough paid DLC they'd start releasing at later date (which I assume will appear sooner or later). Because, you know, while you don't get a lot of content with 8-bit armies, it does cost less than I spent on a dinner with my wife today and it could be good fun in multiplayer. I would honestly prefer Grey Goo to succeed, not 8-bit armies. As it stands tho... It seems to be the opposite.

I picked up grey goo IT WAS GREAT! was a fresh taste but I noticed a lot of people compare it to starcraft and stuff went downhill but this game was fresh when I tried it, It felt like classic 95 C&C straight out and I was happy but it if had content like grey goo? who knows what the outcome would have been.

8bits price is a lot more appealing to folks for sure unlike grey goo which had a big price on it so people was like STARCRAFT is cheaper and moved to that or something... which made me sad for sure. well lets hope they do good with this and hopefuly grey goo comes here so I can buy it a second time for DRM free goodness
I played this a bit in skirmish mode, and tbh it's way too limited, too few units, no unique factions. I thought I would hate the art style but actually it's pretty good, everything is very clear and easy on the eyes, good for a distraction between Starcraft 2 matches but that's about it.
What's up with the DLC not being available in Sweden (and apparently also Germany)? That's the case both on GOG and elsewhere, but no mention is made about a staggered regional release anywhere.

It should be available trough the website on Monday and through Galaxy right now.
