mistermumbles: You can actually go to the Humble Bundle website and test-play some of these games on their store pages. They only have keyboard (no mouse) or gamepad controls. The web trials are pretty short, but it should give you some idea.

Since they're based on the arcade games, all of these games seem to have a (skippable) short tutorial before starting a game that tell you what the various button do. Manuals aren't really necessary for these.
Thanks for the reply. Turf masters does not seem to be one with a playable demo o'er there, but you say it will work with keyboard and there may be a tutorial? That would help, but I'd like confirmation before spending the $3, if at all possible...

75% launch discount for the bundles is nice. But unfortunately there are a lot of lower rated gamers in the bundles and buying them all also would break my budget.

It does too. Just click on the play button that'll download the game files so you can try it out in your browser.

I don't remember exactly...why are the OS X and Linux versions included as unsupported extras? Do they run on modern versions of OS X, or is it like ShadowGrounds in that they won't run on anything past 10.7 or 10.6?

I'm also curious to know if anyone's tested them on WINE yet.

A warning: while the Metal Slug games run reasonably well, Garou and Last Blade are the same useless hack job ports that DotEmu released and abandoned on Steam (with the same inexplicable 57fps lock and resultant judder). The remaining games that aren't on Steam are identical to the barebones ports on Humble (whose version of Garou inexplicably runs at a much smoother 60fps) that have no reconfigurable control support.

I seriously can't believe DotEmu have managed to fuck up EVERY SINGLE port they've done so far (Nicky Boum, Double Dragon Trilogy, R-Type 1 & 2 on Android, Raiden Legacy, the SNK Neo Geo games). DotEmu really needs to go bankrupt. Wonder Boy was only a success because it was ported externally by a company that actually gave a fuck.

ReynardFox: If the MAME romsets update (and they eventually will in one way or another), these versions would become invalid, negating their worth entirely.
In my experience, MAME's Neo Geo romsets don't change that often. For now, all of GOG's Neo Geo games work fine with MAME 0.185. So, get that version plus the current GOG romsets and future changes in MAME shouldn't concern you.

Just for anyone who is not that familiar with MAME: You only need the neogeo.zip once for all of your Neo Geo games and the romset of each game (e.g. mslug.zip). I don't know about the Windows installers, but the Linux installers (*.sh) are just executable ZIP files. That means you don't have to actually install them to get their romsets, you can open them with any ZIP tool on any operating system and extract only the romset ZIPs to your MAME roms folder.

So why would GOG release all these SNK games if they knew the reception would be poor and the games wouldn't sell well? Were they under some obligation?

And again, thanks for that. It's hard to be old and uninformed - well, uninformed at least. I thought that play button was for a trailer or some such. Now I know that it is the game I remember and that it does show how to play. It also seems likely to work on my PC. Off to the shop I go!

I guess I assumed these things based on ReynardFox's and others' disgust with these releases. I don't know the truth.

BUT I also know we represent a very tiny portion of GOG's userbase.

Ah. There seem to be just as many (or more) positive comments as well though. But it seems every release thread now has a lot of complaints. It's the way of GOG right now (note that I'm not saying the complaints here aren't justified: judging by what they've outlined, it looks like they could be quite legit).

Well, for what it's worth, I purchased Turf Masters and played a round on the U.S golf course. The game runs perfectly on my Vista machine, except for a slight response lag when pressing the "A" button. I at least am happy with my purchase. Thanks gog.

edit: I posted a review to the game page. Don't know how long it takes to get added, though.

Agreed.

I still have the DRM-free installers from when the Sega Genesis Classics Collection were DRM-free on Amazon and DotEmu's site. Since then, Amazon now only carries Steam keys and DotEmu's site is no more. Good thing I backup copied those installers.

Ironclad is pretty good. Like Viewpoint (Neo Geo/Sega 32X) with a steam-punk aesthetic.

Fun fact: DotEmu released a set of games called "Irem Arcade Hits" a long time ago. It was the first real big emulation-based hit they had, and it had a set of great games.

Guess what? THEY BOTCHED IT TOO. Crappy audio, skippy gameplay, horrible video filters, and they spent years saying they would fix things and add a new game until they quietly said they had canceled everything. In a very hidden forum post.

The Steam version of the Sega Genesis Classics includes the older, DRM free emulator. Just right click on the game entry and choose "Simple Launcher", or go to the folder on Steam and click on "SegaGenesisClassics.exe." You can't use mods this way, but it works.

I have IREM Arcade Treasures via Amazon Digital Games Store. It was DRM-free when I bought it. And, you're right. The controller input had to be set for each individual game and would only work during gameplay - m/k had to be used to navigate menus. Pain in the @$$.
