Return to the Arcade.

The wait is finally over: 15 -count 'em- 15 essential SNK NEO・GEO classics that no gamer should be without, are finally available DRM-free on GOG.com!

These are the games that devoured our entire allowance when we were skipping school to beat them at the Arcade. For convenience's sake, we've broken them down into three bundles:

<span class="bold">METAL SLUG Bundle</span>: Easily the most insatiable coin-eaters of the bunch, METAL SLUG 1, 2, 3, and X are still just as fun as you remember them from these blessed times. They all come sporting GOG Galaxy support complete with leaderboards, and -with the exception of METAL SLUG 2- both local and online multiplayer functionalities.

<span class="bold">Fighting Classics Bundle</span>: These games' legacy is made up of fierce combos, brutal takedowns, and lots of broken controllers: FATAL FURY SPECIAL, SAMURAI SHODOWN 2, SAMURAI SHODOWN V, THE LAST BLADE, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000, and THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 CLASSIC. Are you up for a rematch? We thought so!

<span class="bold">Arcade Games Bundle</span>: The collection would not be complete without these lesser known but equally addictive hidden gems: BLAZING STAR, BASEBALL STARS 2, KING OF THE MONSTERS, SHOCK TROOPERS, and TWINKLE STAR SPRITES.

Get each game individually for -50% or together with its bundle for 75%.
These discounts will last until June 6, 1PM UTC.

NOTE: Make sure to check each game's individual store page for details on their GOG Galaxy supported features.

great stuff. im all for the fighting games, since i missed the previous humble sale
Great games to archive, but already got them on different storefront. SO even at a decent 75% off bundle, I'll pass the deal.

Thanks for putting 'em here.
Luckily there is enough time to see which games I want, I'm very busy atm. I think I'll get Metal Slug games.
For the hell of it, I just downloaded and tried out my old Humble Bundle version of Metal Slug 3 to remind myself exactly what it was like... You know, while yeah, with the GOG version you do get keymapping and resolution options, but you believe the UI in the GOG releases is actually worse?

As bad as the Humble release is, it at least doesn't replace the game's title screen, attract mode and character select screen with crappy mobile phone quality static menus with sub-par artwork.

Edit: AND IT RUNS FAR BETTER TOO.

What the actual hell GOG?

Thanks for Metal Slugs and Samurai Shodown V special. I have waited those games!
Cool! It's nice to see Metal Slug here. :D

rob.liefeld: The emulator is absolute garbage.
Get NeoRageX and some roms and ignore this release.
In the meantime: shame on you, GOG!
avatar
ReynardFox: NeoRageX is a hideously dated hatchet-job emulator with poor colour, missing effects and dodgy rom support, get MAME if you want to truly respect these games.
avatar
TheCoop: Well, I can confirm that Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown II from the DRM-free Humble Bundle set can't run in the newer versions of MAME Plus (I've also tried 0.106 as the oldest version thus far). It says that the games are missing some files.

Don't know if the GOG versions use the same ROMs as the DRM-free Humble Bundle set, but if so...
avatar
ReynardFox: It really doesn't matter, if someone dumps a more faithful version of the data then whatever is in these packs won't work going forward.
Neorage is the most simple thing ever, that's why I wrote it - and still a more user friendly and faster emulator then the one bundled with the GOG downloads. Which is even more of a shame.
If the dumps are more faithful, that's definitely a welcome progression, but at the moment the only program which you can run them through is the piece of garbage I already mentioned. None of these new versions are currently any other emulators. Until this changes, the only reason to buy these if you're actually trying to create an emulator which would run them.

That may be true, I used NeoRage quite a lot back in the day but switched to MAME out of respect for the games once emulation matured. NeoRage never implemented linescrolling, has inaccurate colour mapping and little emulation bugs all over, it was good to use back when Neo-Geo emulation was still developing and deserves respect for what it did and it's place in emulation history, but like ZSNES, I couldn't in good conscience recommend using it anymore.

can i just say that despite what people think i actually quite liked your comic book art back in the 90s
Are these the same as the recent-ish Humble Bundle releases which have next to no options (not even control reconfigure) and are HTML5 based because their only gimmick was to play them in browser as trial before buying? Like here?

https://www.humblebundle.com/store/neogeo-classic-complete-collection

You can try those time limited if you click on a specific game like SSII:

https://www.humblebundle.com/store/samurai-shodown-ii?hmb_source=xray&amp;hmb_medium=sidebar&amp;hmb_campaign=ootu_1_3_LIWM3mfvnvd

They work exactly the same if bought, the same options interface and what not, just without the browser.

They are really barebones, I tried them and instead went back to emulation with WinKawaks (my emulator of choice for NeoGeo and Capcom CPSI and CPSII gems which fit together so well) which just works better with many faithful visual options (also crappy smoothing ones for those who want them), control options (no unused buttons on your pads with this), switching between arcade/console systems, different regions (NeoGeo roms have all regions included), access to the real arcade system settings instead of a limited selection etc., it's powerful and relatively simple to use (not complex like mame without a frontend).

If these were real efforts like KoF98 and KoF2002 on Steam I'd get them but not if they're worse than standard emulator options. That's a disgrace and it's a shame GOG got in on it but I guess it's not really their fault. Unless these are different and more like the older DotEmu release of Metal Slug 3 (I think spawned from an iOS port back then) which also had its bad points but I think was a bit better. I don't know. Someone good like Code Mystics or the people releasing SNK games on Switch needs to offer a NeoGeo platform in collaboration with SNK so all games are consistently good whenever/wherever released.

Any word on the quality of the Arcade Bundle emulations? I know Metal Slug and some of the fighting games have major issues, but some people seem to be enjoying the Arcade ones like Blazing Star. If so, I may consider getting that part of the sale.

They're probably all the exact same but with something like Blazing Star only using two buttons you don't miss control configuration and what not as much, same if you somehow don't mind the lack of good visual settings. That there's no screenshot of the settings/interface offered says a lot by itself I think.

See here (click the arrow to play) and someone who bought it on GOG can tell us if it's functionally the same or at least very similar.

Also, these releases and bundles are missing games that were in those releases, like Garou.

Maybe saved for the future for extra money rather than be included in the launch hype bundles.

Maybe these are best as an option to feel you gave the company their due but then use emulators...

Why no Garou?? It's the best fighting game imho.
Hummnn, 90's games that won't run on XP or Vista??? omega64's image post of a Galaxy error? Seems requiring the Galaxy client has broken / infested GOG releases from running on older OS's. Craft the World was broken for me after the multiplayer mod / Galaxy requirement release so I assume it will be included in all future GOG releases??

I have an XP box that I let my brother's kids play on and would normally jump on these bundles but . . . I'll pass. I guess GOG releases require Galaxy from here on out which is a deal breaker for me. =(
