Return to the Arcade.

The wait is finally over: 15 -count 'em- 15 essential SNK NEO・GEO classics that no gamer should be without, are finally available DRM-free on GOG.com!

These are the games that devoured our entire allowance when we were skipping school to beat them at the Arcade. For convenience's sake, we've broken them down into three bundles:

<span class="bold">METAL SLUG Bundle</span>: Easily the most insatiable coin-eaters of the bunch, METAL SLUG 1, 2, 3, and X are still just as fun as you remember them from these blessed times. They all come sporting GOG Galaxy support complete with leaderboards, and -with the exception of METAL SLUG 2- both local and online multiplayer functionalities.

<span class="bold">Fighting Classics Bundle</span>: These games' legacy is made up of fierce combos, brutal takedowns, and lots of broken controllers: FATAL FURY SPECIAL, SAMURAI SHODOWN 2, SAMURAI SHODOWN V, THE LAST BLADE, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000, and THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 CLASSIC. Are you up for a rematch? We thought so!

<span class="bold">Arcade Games Bundle</span>: The collection would not be complete without these lesser known but equally addictive hidden gems: BLAZING STAR, BASEBALL STARS 2, KING OF THE MONSTERS, SHOCK TROOPERS, and TWINKLE STAR SPRITES.

Get each game individually for -50% or together with its bundle for 75%.
These discounts will last until June 6, 1PM UTC.

NOTE: Make sure to check each game's individual store page for details on their GOG Galaxy supported features.

So much unwarranted complaining and whining about a now dead company. Be happy that this is on GoG at all. Be happy they're really solid fun games and had for a quite cheap price too.

Shame that of the 23 games that did end up in the old Humble Bundle only 15 made it so far. Losing out on things like Neo Turf Masters and Ironclad is a crime.

ReynardFox: Ok, I just took a hit on the Metal Slugs...

God damned TERRIBLE. These are infact based on the expected DotEmu hot trash releases, their name is the second thing you see.

Menus are grotesque and show complete laziness (eg: directional keys are referred to as 'back' and 'forward' in the controls menu) with half arsed iOS-like fonts and artwork replacing the original opening presentation.

Worst of all though? On my still very beefy PC, these run like absolute crap! Slug 3 struggles to run at full speed and the amount of frame stutter is absolutely offensive... and to put the cherry on this sundae of failure... the pixel ratio is off no matter what resolution you choose, meaning there is shimmering due to uneven pixels everywhere.

I will most definitely be getting a refund on this, absolutely shameful display.
You should write reviews on the store pages about this to warn everyone. I had to dig through this thread to find your post to find out if it was a good port or not.

What a shame it's not. I would have definitively bought Metal Slug 3 for a third time to play it online, but these issues are unacceptable in my opinion.
SNK additions are beautiful. Hope to see more KOFs

Are you talking about DotEmu? If so, DotEmu isn't dead, they're only closing their online store. They're still pawning off their lackluster ports on Steam. And when you have a free emulator (MAME and others) that can run these games almost perfectly, while the company selling them uses an old and inferior emulator that has all kinds of issues (some big, some small), pointing out the company's so-called efforts and dismal track record isn't unwarranted whining and complaining. And it doesn't matter how cheap they are, these games still cost money. As such, some of us are warning people of what to expect because these classic games aren't being given the proper level of emulation quality they need and deserve.

I love SNK's games. Series like Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, Shock Troopers, King of Fighters and others are great. One offs like Pulstar, Blazing Star, Last Resort, Neo Turf Masters and such are great. These emulated versions? They aren't that great and that's the fault of DotEmu.

I would love to support GOG for carrying these games, but I'm not spending more money on the same inferior emulated ports I already got stung by once. If the GOG staff can somehow fix the emulation issues that DotEmu disregarded, then I'll throw money GOG's way. Until that happens...

"finally available DRM-free "

They've been available DRM-free for a long time on Humblebundle.

InkPanther: I don't understand why Mac and Linux versions of Metal Slug are mentioned as bonus/goodies. Does it mean they're not officially supported?
avatar
Matruchus: It says in small script on the gamepage that they are unsupported.

I never heard of any of these games since I never owned a NES
None of these are on NES. They were on.... wait for it..... "NEO GEO".

HunchBluntley: Heh. I noticed that, for some reason, all these games' titles are set in ALL CAPS in the store. Looking at the list under the "New" tab, I thought maybe they'd reverted to displaying all titles in capitalized form, but, scrolling down, all other titles still show up in the "new", variable-caps (or whatever it's called) form.
Maybe THE PUBLISHER insisted that THEIR GAMES could only be sold here if they were given THE PROPER EMPHASIS. :P
Japanese (Might be Chinese owned now) publishers, like SNK, don't know the difference between letters. If you look at Steam, nearly all Japanese games on there are written in all capitals. It's very annoying.

tfishell: Make a passionate strong case to GOG Support, because I don't think this is technically covered under their refund policy.

It'd be nice if GOG fixed what they can, but the question is, can they really fix much?
GOG is already in my bad books over recent behaviour, I'm going to be exceedingly pissed if they reject my request.

As for bugfixes, they are highly unlikely. Unless GOG code or implement a completely new emulator the audio/visual anomalies will never be fixed, nor will the grotesque UI elements. I highly doubt DotEmu gave GOG their source code.

Good advice, I just dropped a review on the Metal Slug 3 page as it's the most high profile of the rip-offs I just paid for.

Yes, lets all be happy that a hack job company put out poorly performing, ugly looking versions of classic games... it's better than nothing right? No need to take a stand against lazy, shady companies who bank on nostalgia and have no respect for their source material.

More half assed scraps please!

Hello,

Have you tested the Windows version or another one (Mac or Linux)?

From other posts I read, it seems that the Windows version is not the same than the Humble one (which I own) but I don't know to what extend (DotEmu version with additional features, totally different emulation...).

I've tested the Windows versions.

They aren't /exactly/ the same as the Humble releases, someone has added keybinding and resolution settings, I don't know if GOG did this or not, but the base emulation and UI are very clearly based on DotEmu's code, as I mentioned earlier, the DotEmu logo is right there when you boot a game up.
Just found a file called humble.png with the GoG logo in Samurai Shodown V
Making new packages with better emulators for every OS and trying to get the rights to sell them that way would be advisable.

Probably but since we don't know what are the contracts between the various entities, there is a huge gap between advisable and doable.

mwnn: For Metal Slug I just emulate the Wii Anthology with Dolphin:
https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Metal_Slug_Anthology

Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, and Metal Slug 6.

My old Phenom x4 955 isn't exactly cutting edge anymore but it worked perfectly when I tried it last.

Plugged in my XBOX 360 controller and off I went.

Could probably also get it going using Retroarch and the MAME / FinalBurn Alpha core.
I grabbed the PC version of Metal Slug Collection (by DHM Interactive). It didn't come out in the U.S., and the package is pretty bare bones in terms of extras. But the emulation is well done and it features all 7 games from MS1 to MS6. I have the PS2 version as well, but when I found the PC collection for cheap, I couldn't pass it up :D
