Return to the Arcade.

The wait is finally over: 15 -count 'em- 15 essential SNK NEO・GEO classics that no gamer should be without, are finally available DRM-free on GOG.com!

These are the games that devoured our entire allowance when we were skipping school to beat them at the Arcade. For convenience's sake, we've broken them down into three bundles:

METAL SLUG Bundle: Easily the most insatiable coin-eaters of the bunch, METAL SLUG 1, 2, 3, and X are still just as fun as you remember them from these blessed times. They all come sporting GOG Galaxy support complete with leaderboards, and -with the exception of METAL SLUG 2- both local and online multiplayer functionalities.

Fighting Classics Bundle: These games' legacy is made up of fierce combos, brutal takedowns, and lots of broken controllers: FATAL FURY SPECIAL, SAMURAI SHODOWN 2, SAMURAI SHODOWN V, THE LAST BLADE, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000, and THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 CLASSIC. Are you up for a rematch? We thought so!

Arcade Games Bundle: The collection would not be complete without these lesser known but equally addictive hidden gems: BLAZING STAR, BASEBALL STARS 2, KING OF THE MONSTERS, SHOCK TROOPERS, and TWINKLE STAR SPRITES.

Get each game individually for -50% or together with its bundle for 75%.
These discounts will last until June 6, 1PM UTC.

NOTE: Make sure to check each game's individual store page for details on their GOG Galaxy supported features.

TheCoop: That's a distinct possibility, but that then begs the question, what did DotEmu use as the BIOS if (at least some) emulators won't run with their file?
avatar
Foxhack: MAME's files get updated with newer versions of the emulator. That is why these files work on MAME Plus 0.168, but they don't work on 0.185 (I think some of the program files got updated, it's been a while.)
You've got it backward. MAMEPlus! 0.168 won't run the games, regardless of which versions you use of the games/BIOS (newer or the Humble Bundle set). MAME 0.185 will run the games from the Humble Bundle set, but only if you use the bigger BIOS file from other sites (the Humble Bundle set BIOS won't let the games start due to missing files).

liamphoenix: I'm seeing a lot of reports that the PC releases are actually worse than playing via MAME though.
Yeah, DotEmu has a long history of shoddy emulation ports.

All of their SNK games suffer from visual and aural problems (some games more than others, though). Their Irem arcade pack had stability issues (as well as having DotEmu drop promised additions to the game line up) and their Raiden Fighters pack had all sorts of problems. The worst part is that DotEmu never fixes things. At most, they put out two patches to add this or that feature, but they don't address the at times glaring emulation problems. Then they abandon the project and rerelease it later on (they did four... yes FOUR versions of the Raiden Fighters pack and all of them had problems).

They're a nostalgia cash grab company. Nothing more. They don't know how to fix what they release and they've proven repeatedly that they don't care if it's broken. They'll take what money they can get before word gets out about the problems their releases have, then they'll split. And now their garbage ports are on GOG apparently. So unless the GOG staff can fix what DotEmu wouldn't, I don't see the GOG versions being any better than past DotEmu releases.

eliseus: You can't play most of the games with one keyboard unless your keyboard supports NKRO. And I doubt it does.
avatar
Christliar: But if it does support NKRO you can play them on one keyboard? I'm asking because sometimes it doesn't even give you an option to set keyboard commands for the second character at all. Can you configure keyboard controls at all on these releases?
I think you can. I opened the first Metal Slug and it has controls for both players with keyboard by default (one with arrows and one with alphas).

(but if your keyboard has NKRO I guess you can afford a gamepad for arcade games too...)

Exciting releases! I'm hearing that the these versions (emulation?) has issues, sadly, but hopefully this still makes some people happy.

ReynardFox: I will most definitely be getting a refund on this, absolutely shameful display.
Make a passionate strong case to GOG Support, because I don't think this is technically covered under their refund policy.

It'd be nice if GOG fixed what they can, but the question is, can they really fix much?

Sad. Sometimes I wonder how much of stuff like this is GOG's fault, but there's also making sure your product is quality on release. I wish I could pick these up without reservation now while they're significantly discounted and be completely assured that GOG will fix them, but... I really want that guarantee. Gonna have to wait this week out to see how it looks next Monday or Tuesday.
Blazing Star is just... superior. What an unknown gem!

So that would mean WinKawaks wouldn't run these either, but since FBAlpha updates to latest MAME standards every update it most likely should run it.

Don't take my word for anything though.

pimpmonkey2382.313: Are you missing the bios files?
avatar
TheCoop: Nope. The Humble Bundle set comes with the bios file as well (neogeo.zip) even though it's... off.

As an update, I tried Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown II with the neogeo BIOS file in the DRM-free Humble Bundle set. Not only did it not work, but when I went and tracked down the currently available version of the BIOS that's out there, it was significantly smaller. When I plugged that version of the BIOS in, both games started up. However, that comes with a caveat.

MAMEPlus! 0.168 won't run the games at all, even with the newest versions of the games/BIOS available online (missing files errors). Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but if so, I don't know what. However, MAMEUI 0.185 and regular MAME 0.185 will run them, as long as you use the bigger file-sized BIOS. So it seems DOTemu may have used a trimmed-down BIOS file that emulators don't seem to like. I don't own the GOG releases, so someone else will have to step in and try those versions out in MAME. But for reference...

Humble Bundle set...

neogeo.zip = 120KB
mslug.zip = 12,655KB
samsho2.zip = 15,394KB

From other sites...

neogeo.zip = 1,556KB
mslug.zip = 12,857KB
samsho2.zip = 14,144KB
I've actually tested these with different emulators:
NeoRageX is a no-go.
Mame, depending on the iteration, is iffy.
Winkawaks, on the other hand, recognizes these ROMs and runs them just fine. For those using Windows XP or any 32 bit Windows OS, I highly suggest Winkawaks.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY do people still cling to this ancient emulator? Even your CELL PHONE will run the games faster and with lesser compatibility issues than this!

Winkawaks is solid, I remember this being the first emulator I ever used back in 2004 when I was 14 in highschool. had some dude in the lunch room with his laptop playing this and we all gathered around while he played metal slug and damn one of the coolest emulators ever right next the the fusion sega emulator <3

these games where made way back and snk has not made a ground up remake on a new engine with old assets so all we get are emulations of these games :/ the only time I see these games run great was the ps2 and wii collection where there was no lag. maybe one day we will get what you want. who knows :P

btw does anyone by any chance have the wallpaper or images for the metal slugs used in the store pages? I hope if there is they are decent high quality to use for desktop

Yes! Metal Slug! This is a nice surprise. I never thought I'd see the day. Now if we could only get all of the KoF games. Thanks GoG!
Oh wow!

My wishlist got a lot bigger today!
I seem to be having trouble getting my Xbox controller to work with the neo geo games on ubuntu, double checked to see if it's the controller by using shovel knight and it works fine there. Is anyone else having trouble using a controller on linux versions?
