Return to the Arcade.

The wait is finally over: 15 -count 'em- 15 essential SNK NEO・GEO classics that no gamer should be without, are finally available DRM-free on GOG.com!

These are the games that devoured our entire allowance when we were skipping school to beat them at the Arcade. For convenience's sake, we've broken them down into three bundles:

METAL SLUG Bundle: Easily the most insatiable coin-eaters of the bunch, METAL SLUG 1, 2, 3, and X are still just as fun as you remember them from these blessed times. They all come sporting GOG Galaxy support complete with leaderboards, and -with the exception of METAL SLUG 2- both local and online multiplayer functionalities.

Fighting Classics Bundle: These games' legacy is made up of fierce combos, brutal takedowns, and lots of broken controllers: FATAL FURY SPECIAL, SAMURAI SHODOWN 2, SAMURAI SHODOWN V, THE LAST BLADE, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000, and THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 CLASSIC. Are you up for a rematch? We thought so!

Arcade Games Bundle: The collection would not be complete without these lesser known but equally addictive hidden gems: BLAZING STAR, BASEBALL STARS 2, KING OF THE MONSTERS, SHOCK TROOPERS, and TWINKLE STAR SPRITES.

Get each game individually for -50% or together with its bundle for 75%.
These discounts will last until June 6, 1PM UTC.

NOTE: Make sure to check each game's individual store page for details on their GOG Galaxy supported features.

InkPanther: I don't understand why Mac and Linux versions of Metal Slug are mentioned as bonus/goodies. Does it mean they're not officially supported?
The Windows versions of Metal Slug 1-3, Last Blade, and Shock Troopers resemble the Steam release. Graphics filters and general aesthetic. The Mac and Linux inclusions are more like the Humble Store release.

Nonetheless, worth owning.
A strange port. How in Samurai Shodown to adjust control on the keyboard for you?

Christliar: Can 2 players play the Metal Slug games using one keyboard on this release?
avatar
eliseus: You can't play most of the games with one keyboard unless your keyboard supports NKRO. And I doubt it does.
But if it does support NKRO you can play them on one keyboard? I'm asking because sometimes it doesn't even give you an option to set keyboard commands for the second character at all. Can you configure keyboard controls at all on these releases?

Where to begin.....These are all amazing but BLAZING STAR takes the full credit as it is by far my fave horizontal shoot em up of all time. Played the hell out of it on the arcades. So thank you GoG and SNK!

Hoping to see more of these like KoF 98 maybe.

Ok everyone I downloaded all the metal slugs and tested each of them

so far here is what you get

resolutions of 4k highest all games support

1 or 2 player, single player

online gog galaxy multiplayer ( metal slug 2 DOES NOT HAVE ONLINE only local 2 player and single player )

changeable button layouts for keyboard and controller and hori fight stick which I tested.

Metal slug 2 lags a lot just like the dotemu humble bundle version ( 1,3,4 do not lag )

metal slug 3 has unlock able gallery

all games support auto rapid fire so you don't need to spam the button to fire constantly, just hold down and spray :P

alt tab friendly

4:3 or 16:9 support options for monitor in menu

Scan line option 50%/ 100% makes it kinda look cool and not bad looking.

audio sounds just like original

no save states for in levels from what I tested. might have it but not sure.

all the games have a bit of an altered character selection screen ( these are Not original games ) these games are modified not emulators from the looks of it, If you want originals stick with the humble bundle versions or emulators.

last off is

I have to say these are amazing versions of the game, it has online single and multi with keybind and resolution options, so if you buy this you will be happy but if you are a purist and wan't the raw version of these games with the lag that the actual neo geo machines had then go with the humble bundle versions. I have 1,2,3 on original cartridge and I can confirm the lag that the humble bundle has is identical to the original cartridge.

NOW BUY IT! I will be online to play some games today so yeah!

Thanks :)

Thank you for the feedback!

I would hope for a level of polish similar to Mega Man Legacy Collection and the Disney Afternoon Collection to justify a purchase of old roms. The Galaxy online multiplayer is a cool addition and has me tempted, though, that is a cool addition.

Wait, for the fighting games, two controllers are not supported? That is sad. So, I guess if I buy them it will be only to support the company and have them in my digital collection, not for actual playing...

trusteft: I have to say, I am a bit surprised Windows XP is not supported for these games.
Anyway, good move to bring console games here, I support it.
GOG has not had XP support for new releases for some time.
They might very well run on XP, but GOG will not guarantee it.
Problem is that some of the tweks that GOG does to make a game run on current operating systems might created problems with XP.

Agreed. For Windows XP or any 32 bit Windows OS I suggest dumping these games' ROMs into an emulator. Winkawaks springs to mind due to its LOW requirements and compatibility with both XInput and Direct Input controllers.

nightcraw1er.488: Its been available for quite some time elsewhere (HUmble at leas). Lets all celebrate how far behind the curve we are here on GOG.

nate1222: I've had the Humble releases for well over a year now. Nontheless, I crowbarred my wallet in support of DRM-free releases of my old faves.
Your mad then. Surely the whole.galaxy, Gwent, goblins inc, debacles recently have shown the company doesn't care for DRM free going forward, and yet your chucking money to support them. Well, I suppose I was like that once, we live and learn.
You released me, thank you gog! :)
I got Metal Slug 3 a while ago in a humble bundle. Was very disappointed as the controls couldn't be changed and there was no auto-fire (!?!), making me return to the emulated version very quick.
I would buy the whole bundle in a heart beat if someone confirms these issues have been fixed and the game is actually playable...
Don't know any of this games. Are they fun?

Projectsonic: DotEmu, Win only, I'll pass. I got the MS games on Android back in the day, and they were meh ports. I do like that it's basically a ROM though, so we basically all have a myriad of source ports in emulation.
avatar
nate1222: Due to the lack of 32 bit Windows support I suggest dumping the ROMS into Winkawaks. Trying to run the Windows versions on 32 bit OSes results in the games running too fast to even be playable.

[Corrected from earlier post]
Linux versions at Humble Store, on the other hand, offer 32 bit or 64 bit installation.
Final Burn Alpha has basically been upgraded Winkawaks to me. I would suggest taking a look at that too. You can do more with it, it works on more things, and it updates. It may be a tad slower on much slower setups though.

FBAlpha is also a core in RetroArch. So if you're using that just download it, setup, and go.

How do you change controls? I realized it's just a png file :/ I can't make special moves if I can't customize the controls.. Atleast samurai shodown roms are uncensored ones.
