The wikipedia list of banned games in Brazil is hilarious, since all of these games could/can be bought easily :P

Gah! That's as bad, possibly worse, than the Aussie list.

The Chaos Engine was sort-of censored when it was originally released in the US - the Priest was turned into the Scientist. Americans love them some guns, but have conniptions if you show nipples or fuck with the church.

Germany: flip a coin on any aspect of anything other than sex.

Rules have become a lot less strict in Germany. Doom and Quake were banned (for realistic violence) and are now classified 16+ (for rather abstract violence). But to trigger this, there is a bureaucratic process to be triggered (Zenimaxx did this with Doom and Quake) to get the games de-banned. So a lot of older titles are still "banned" even if they would be considered harmless today. They will drop off the list after 25 years - when they have to be re-evaluated. I mean The Chaos Engine?! I have the boxed Amiga version, guess I got lucky.

Swastikas are still a no-go, even if it's very clear the the enemies are the Nazis. No publisher up to now had the balls to claim games as art. Comics/Graphics novels have the art bonus since Art Spiegelman's Mouse (highly recommended!), and even that took a few walks to court.

Well Germany has two kinds of bans: "Kids in peril!" and "Evil! Evil! Evil! Banned!". Problem is, for a company like GOG the effect would be the same: "Henceforth demon, from Google's search results!", and that's about the only legal measures the Germans could take, but still pretty harmful.
I guess that's the only measure Out Back could take also (since GOG has no dependence in Australia). But it's a valid threat.

I have to agree with a few of the others, that this isn't a "real" region-lock in that sense per see. I view region-locking as the developer/publisher deliberately blocking out their games from countries of their own violation, when they do have a choice (at least with no threat of jail time/governmental trouble) not to. Happens quite a bit on Steam.

In this case, it kind of falls under censorship than actual region-locking.

That's why buying games like Carmageddon and Postal in promos was a great idea in many countries as long as it was still possible. I expected shit like this when they silently introduced the German USK-rating here a few days ago.

Importing physical copies is still ok, so I hope the import over a wire will stay open...
