Now, I've always known Nintendo to be a little out of touch, but Reggie simply hasn't been with it since the Wii died.

Sure, you can argue that there's a "right" way to do loot boxes, but I argue that anything that preys on weakspots of human psychology isn't quite right.

Loot boxes are randomized items and thing that in many cases, can be paid for with cash. It's like baseball cards, but you can't sell it, unlike your now worthless Kevin Polcovich card. Many places consider loot boxes to be gambling, and not the fun kind with blackjack and hookers.

I know what lootboxes are, I just didn't know Nintendo was into that too. Actually I didn't expect that was a thing in the console world at all.

Just for the records: I'll never buy a "lootboxed" game. Do you hear me, game industry?

That's not unreasonable to me. On the face of it, anyway, as long as "not the only way" doesn't equal some super-duper-ooper ridiculous quest / method and that it's not a unique item that only one non-paying player can attain.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the most unfavourable opinion on lootboxes from any of the Nintendo higher ups. I'd expect the Japanese executives to be much more open to them, since gambling is such a big business in Japan. If they weren't such a kid friendly company, you can probably guess Nintendo would be asking us to hit the lever, just like Konami.

He's a businessman with a marketing background, so of course he's about exploiting consumer weakness. That's what pretty much all advertising is built around. GOG's ads, emails, sales and whatnot are similarly targeted and thought about. It's just the nature of the beast.

Off topic: I think you mean bad rep, as in a bad reputation. Bad rap is what you hear when you turn on the radio these days.

Actually, "bad rep" is the improper format and "bad rap" is correct. The original phrase was "bum rap" as in "a disfavorable rap sheet", with "rap sheet" being slang for a criminal record. The phrase "bad rep" isn't technically incorrect to use, since you can indeed use "rep" as short for "reputation", but it's far less common. In practice, the terms can be used pretty interchangeably.

Huh, learn something new every day. I never heard the term "bum rap" before. Bad rep(utation) still strikes me as more logical and universal in most cases, as the other version seems more specific, in addition to being an outdated(?) slang term. I can't help but wonder if many younger people who use the term "bad rap" really do think it's related to the music genre.
