well, since there were some discussions about all the crap on the forum (rep abuse, insults, threats, alts, scammers ...). i'd like to know how you think an alternative to moderation would work here.

i think because of some problems (one is lack of ressources) gog is not willing to moderate the forum although its one big step forward to a better forum, judging from my one year experience with the forum. advanced forum search would be nice also, but i gave up on that. gog don't want to spent resources.

i'll suggest an alternative to moderation: gog should just give every user the abillity to bann single users from their own created threads, the banns should be individual to every single thread. also every user should be able to censor or remove single posts in their own threads, being able to close them and being able to set up a password for its own threads individually.

of course this alone wouldn't solve the problems. this will only work by combining many features, like: remove rep and add post/thread count instead, extra section for gifts, paygate (min 25$) to the gifts section and email verification at account creation. if you want to have some or all this features, then write to support! i don't think that making community wishes helps here at all.

so what do you think, is this a real alternative or did i miss some problems?
A good alternative would be some community knights given corresponding power by GOG staff on voluntary basis, just so that the rules are enforced. They are not rules if they are not inforced (as of right now) - they are "guidelines"...
Paygate to forum posting is still the one and only correct answer.

Spend $25 on non-gift codes and you can post.
OMG i would love to use the ban-hammer. no one would be safe!!! bwahahahahaha!

seriously though, something needs to be done. the community is getting sad. and it's keeping the idiots in and the good guys out.

but what if a new user has an install question and it's the weekend? i don't like that new people are punished for being new.

as i said above only combined methods will help this alone is still not enough.

Until that benchmark is met game specific forums would be unlocked by owning the game - just as they're added to your favourites at the moment.

This _is_ the alternative to moderation. I've never been on a forum where the people running it didn't care what went on.

Slashdot and Soylent news both use meta-moderation. Take a look at Slashdot to see why that doesn't work.

A paygate would solve some of the problems, but it would need to be used in conjunction with a limit on the number of accounts you're allowed to have.

I'm not terribly thrilled with the idea of a paygate, but perhaps some sort of icon to indicate that you've spent some money here would be a step in the right direction. It would make it much easier for gog to know what is and isn't an alt, even in cases where VPNs and such are being used.

But, really, without Mr. Gog actually having somebody in the forums all day and all night, I just don't see things getting better. I know there are companies that juts provide moderation servcies, but Mr. Gog seems to not care what sort of cesspool this becomes, so don't expect that to change.

I'm somewhat tempted to stop posting in the English forum completely and move over to the German forum, but I'm a bit busy right now to do that. At least as a less commonly spoken language, it probably gets less trolling. Or at least for the time being.

EDIT: Perhaps we could get an alt tax where we're allowed to have up to 3 of them.

The temptation is stop is running high. I went for a week before but Star Trek lured me back. This time... *fist in mouth* I'd probably never return. Let's not come to that, I dig this groovy little place. :D Yes, time to call for some Mods. (gimme payment and I'll do it)

gog should sell banhammers additionally, so you can use a hammer at home while clicking on the bann button. wouldn't this be awesome?
I know what you're getting at.

Sure, I'll be a moderator! :D

I'm tempted to set up my own forum. With hookers and pancakes and blackjack.

On second thought, screw the pancakes and blackjack.
