Ok. they are offering store credit, which I am ok with, as I was planning to continue to purchase games from GOG in the future.

However, I will be careful to avoid purchasing multiplayer games or to confirm that it does work with other copies of the game first :D

There is a reason why people are fixated on this point.

GOG has recently released a client of their own called Galaxy. The Galaxy client is optional, you don't have to use it if you don't want to. On top of that Galaxy is still in beta so I would actually recommend not using it until it becomes more stable or unless you absolutely want to use a specific feature of it. And one of the features is called Crossplay, which allows you to play multiplayer matches with people on Steam.

However, Crossplay support needs to be built into the game by the developer. Since Galaxy as well as Crossplay is fairly new only a hand full of games support it. If Armello was advertised as such but does not have it that is a clear case of 'does not work as advertised'.

As I said, with a little bit of luck they might make an exception in such a case.

I miss the days when multiplayer games allowed you to just enter in an IP address and it'd just work :D

Though I do understand people who want to have automatic matchmaking since your friends won't always have time to play with you. Automatic matchmaking has simply become the norm and you can hardly ship a multiplayer game without nowadays. Sadly a lot of developers are simply lazy and go the Steam-only route... :-(

As a game developer myself, I can understand why and don't blame them at all. The % of users who want direct IP connect and LAN support is really quite small - there are so many things you'd rather spend limited resources on.

Just a comment on the Cross Platform Multiplayer tag.

1) When Steam mentions Cross Platform, they usually mean Windows/Mac/Linux as platforms. Whether you count those as different platforms or different OSes is none of Steam's concern.
2) GOG uses the term Cross-play instead of Cross Platform Multiplayer, as can be seen on the AvP gamecard (you may need to expand the description to see it). Not sure if all GOG games that support Cross-play have that notice though.
3) There is also the case of 2007's [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun_(2007_video_game)]Shadowrun[/url] which allowed Windows and XBox 360 players to multiplay together. That would be a third case of Cross Platform Multiplayer, different from the above two.


Pre-post edit: I see you already got your refund, though it may have been possible to contact Armello's publisher, explain the situation, provide a copy of the receipt and ask them for a steam key. Not sure that they would give one, but most Indie publishers are reasonable people.

GOG really should add cross-play tag under modes on games that have it (there really should be list of multiplayer modes game supports on each game card wether it's direct ip, lan, hotseat, co-op, servers based, Galaxy cross-play or what not) as currently only way to find out is read the game cards and that's like seeking needle in a haysack considering only around 1 out of 100 titles in GOG catalog support it. :-p

Don't think so, but you can try MaGoG, just in case it does have that tag.

Then the question is what the "cross-platform multiplayer" tag on Steam actually means. I would guess that it means that you can play multiplayer between people on iOS, Android, Playstation 4, Linux, OS X, and Windows rather than takeing different distribution platforms into account (I would be rather surprised if Steam isn't quite happily pretending that it's the only game distribution platform that exists on PC). Galaxy has a feature GOG calls cross-play which is intended to enable multiplayer with Steam users, but it's up to the game developer to include support for it (and I'm not entirely sure if it's completely ready yet).

With your use case in mind though, I would, indeed, contact GOG support and explain the situation.

It's a bit subjective. The game must be deemed unplayable or that the issue the user is experiencing is game-breaking. I remember there being a complaint by a Gog user that he/she couldn't get a refund because the music wouldn't work or stopped working in the middle of the game. Gog's verdict: the game was still playable and therefore not subject to refund.

It could be argued that the multiplayer portion of the game is technically a localized version, but is it unplayable? Sokolov22 or anyone else would have to come up with a very convincing argument.

Ok, I see from JMich that sokolov22 got a credit, so I've edited out the rest. Glad you worked out a resolution with Gog! I'm always worried about purchases of games only because I'm used to the general retail store rules over here which make it impossible to get a refund/credit for any opened software.

It is good to see that gog will help customers like this. To be honest I would have supported the decision of no refund, the argument OP has for asking for one is not just weak it is nonexistent - but this fact makes the refund even more positive for the rest of us.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure why you said this to me.

My perspective is that the product doesn't work as described, but I do see how there's some argument to be made here.

Personally, I rarely play single player, and for me, if a product's multiplayer component doesn't work properly (for whatever reason), it is functionally useless to me.
