Recently thought about Warcraft 3 and how awesome the community is with still supporting it with mods and maps.

I was wondering if anyone knows of some gems that have been made over the years. My all time favourites would have to be 'Fulgore's epic castle siege' and 'neo Warcraft gladiators'. One thing that makes them so great is the creators took time to actually make AI for them.

Back in the day (old fella here), I remember having tower defence maps and even castle defense ones with AI but I just don't know where to find them now :(
There was even this 3-way dota style map too which was quite well done.

The best site I have at the moment is epicwar.com.
lol, figures.

Some years ago I saw a complete remake of Warcraft 1 done in Warcraft 3.

How did they accomplish that?

Humans and Orcs only had a handful of units that are completely similar.

Humans in Warcraft don't have a "Human Crossbowman" as their ranged infantry, its a Dwarven Riflemen. Neither do Warcraft 3 humans has a Catipult, its a Steamtank.

I don't remember all of the details but I think they used one of the human crossbowman neutral units for the archer, and a variation of the orcish catapult for their catapult.
Hiveworkshop.com is the largest modding site still alive and in relatively good health, I recommend looking there (although it looks like it had a site redesign too many and now it's a pain to browse).

I've been playing EotA recently (AoS/Dota map, singleplayer is possible with bots) and it's quite fun, that AI is something very, very impressive for a Wc3 map. It's pretty complex and there's a lot going on (it's actually 5 maps in one, each one with different objectives and mechanics) so it may be a good idea playing against no more than one or two bots as you learn the basics.

Other than that it's hard to suggest maps and campaigns nowadays, Wc3 patches tend to break compatibility with old maps and campaigns, so a lot of them simply won't work anymore with a fully patched game. Anyways, try looking at the "top rated" or "director's cut" sections, maybe you'll find something worth playing there.

Yeah, I actually found a few good ones that apparently have 10's of hours worth of play on Hiveworkshop.
I remember that one from its really early years! Wow, it's changed a bit.
I'll have to try Dota as well seeing as the bots are just phenomenal. They'll kick my ass, but I still enjoy it haha! It's odd but I kind of prefer the original Dota as opposed to Valve's. Maybe it's the old school feel about it.
I remember having the best time with my friends playing various awesome, crazy or even broken mods for Warcraft 3. Good times. I remember a siege of Minas Tirith mod, that we would play quite a few times, but never had quite enough people to really play it properly. Still, it gave birth to some long running jokes and funny situations. There were some fun RPG-ish mods, some DIablo-like stuff. There was actually a fun "paintball" mod played with night elf archers, there was even a Whacky Wheels-like racer. And of course a myriad of tower defence stuff and DOTA and the like, but I never liked those much.

Much as I liked the single player campaign, those are my best memories of Warcraft 3. But that was way back, in the days of internet cafes and lan parties and sabre-tooth ducks roaming the Earth.
