I don't like Firefox anymore. Nothing personal, it just lags horribly, eats RAM, and sometimes the entire window turns completely black, and I have to minimize it and restore it to get it working again. I've been looking at some browsers that seem good. Pale Moon, Waterfox, and Microsoft Edge. What I'm looking for is performance, and support for add-ons. I only need Adblock and Reddit Enhancement Suite. Support for themes is a plus (gotta love that Space Fantasy), but it's not essential. The add-ons are important though. After all these years, I can't go back to seeing ads and using Reddit without night-mode.

I tested Pale Moon 64-bit a while ago, and performance was good, but support for Firefox add-ons was lacking at the time (some worked, but none of the ones I needed), has this changed?

Microsoft Edge is lightning-fast, RES is available to Windows Insiders, and will be available to casual users soon, and I read this morning that Adblock is waiting for Microsoft to approve release of Adblock for Edge. It also uses a lot less resources than Firefox. All good! But, if the other two browsers are actually better, I'll rather use one of those.

I have not tested Waterfox, and I pretty much know nothing about it. Apparently it's good though!

So, does any of you have any experience with these browsers, or have other recommendations?

Don't know what add-ons you use but here are the ones i use for Pale Moon; Adblock Latitude, FlashDisable and NoScript. I kinda miss BetterTTV which isn't supported in Pale Moon. But that's the only other add-on i would consider using.

I believe Pale Moon and Waterfox are better optimized though. It's listed in their features.

From my experience Pale Moon runs much smoother than both Firefox and Chrome.

You could, of course, try Chrome or Chromium. The add-ons you say you need are available for Chrome (though I prefer uBlock Origin to Adblock.)

I use Firefox almost exclusively, but today I got a new update for it, and I have been unable to connect to gog.com with it. Odd. So now I am using Opera instead, at least I am now able to access GOG with it, albeit sometimes it gets slow or stuck too, maybe GOG is just overloaded. But Firefox hasn't been working AT ALL for gog.com today.


As for your question, what kind of browsing habits do you have, what kind of sites you visit etc.? E.g. mostly porn and gog, sometimes mixed together? I wouldn't use e.g. Chrome for visiting porn sites because I am sure Google tracks all that to you and then later sends assplug advertisements etc. to you all the time, thinking you are some kind of sex addict..

I noticed this as well when I tried Pale Moon a while back. Is Adblock Latitude working just as well as Adblock Plus? And do you know if RES works on Pale Moon? I'm a very casual browser-user. A few online news-sites, GOG forums, Reddit, YouTube. No porn.

Well, I would say try them. Its hard to advise, as needs and expectations are different over different hardware and people. Me I still use Firefox, never had any issues with it, but I know the whole black box bit was a real drawback. The only advice I would give is to avoid IE. I don't know what Edge is like, personally I would need some serious convincing before I tried it, but IE simply doesn't work, even with MS sites like Outlook.com.

I use Chrome at work, its ok, seems quite stripped back, but runs ok. The other two mentioned I haven't used.

Try Vivaldi. It's still in beta but in my experience has been pretty stable. It runs on Blink, so it should have the compatibility of webkit browsers, and it's being worked on by the former Opera guys.

Effectively, it's got a lot of similarities to the old Opera (without the compatibility issues) before the switch-over to webkit (think things like tab stacking). I still miss the Presto engine, but as far as usability is concerned, Vivaldi has some nice features in it. Just remember that it's still in beta.

Firefox/Iceweasel only eat RAM if you have inefficient adblocker.

I understand why a lot of people use Firefox, but I just don't understand why it should lag on my "Witcher-ready" gaming rig. CCleaner didn't do any wonders, and I tried disabling my fancy high-res "Space Fantasy"-theme, still no luck. I'll try Pale Moon.

I think Edge is a lot better than IE. They did a great job of optimizing it for the Universal Windows Platform. I use it on my Windows Phone, and it has good performance, despite it running on a budget phone. It's also lightning-fast on my desktop. I have not tested Edge on my Xbox though (why would I use a browser on a Xbox? :P). I've heard about the issues with some sites on IE, it seems to be a known issue. I have not experienced anything bad so far on Edge though.
