Well, isn't that just great? Who cares what do these updates contain, how long the upgrade process is going to take and so on. We'll give you a screen with the most generic text and an extremely annoying loading(?) animation.

Several minutes later and it's at 20%. Upgrading Windows 10 is an overall frustrating experience.

That's not even the worst about system update, even if updates for 90% of linux distros don't require reboots and take a minute or two at worst if you have at least 100Mbit/s internet.

Worst part is windows update service itself. Here's the situation - got a decent 2018 workstation laptop without disk drives (people at work removed the drive because it contained some data they needed). Bought a new 2Tb SSD, downloaded latest Win10 iso from MS site, made a flash drive. Windows installed okay, no issues there. Booted to desktop, two minutes later fans went "woooooo" and i see 100% load on all 8 cores. Windows update service got screwed up in fresh installation. I had to go through not really intuitive process of resetting it. Who said that you don't need to use CLI on windows that often? How about going through series of long commands tas a first thing before you can actually use the system? In the meantime installing Ubuntu gets you updated system because installer can connect to the net and get fresh packages.

Thing is that WU service freeze problem exists since Vista and now it's Win10 and it's still the same.

And if that's not enough there are mandatory updates that require reboot by default meaning that you can't just let your PC to run stuff unattended for a long time because windows decided to update some minor component.

All that is because MS can't make updates to work like they do in any modern OS where only kernel update requires reboot (some OS are capable of reloading kernel on the fly even).

In 2018, I was at a LAN gaming event in NYC that was co-hosted with a FGC local events by groups from 2Old2Furious and ThrowDownNJX and a few others.

I was there with my wife and 2 of my kids to play L4D2, Quake 3 and The King of Fighters 2002. Weekend long event but one of my sons lived near by so we crashing at his place.

Day 2 - Saturday at around 11 am. While setting up Quake 3 stations for my family while they went to go buy some merch and stuff an EXPLOSION of keyboard pieces and computer case debris fly into the air and down the stairs of the walk way to the lower floor that had board games and fighting games.

Turns out two dudes have been trying to game since Friday night but Windows update kept interrupting their games so they were using the setup time to update and kept on getting BSOD on one computer while the other computer estimated 14 days and and 10 hours to complete update.

We all had super fast internet connection of 300 MPBS each so not sure was going on with that but these dudes were pissed and decided to trash their machines but they got escorted out and was not allowed back in.

Moderators and referees had to do a 20 mins power point on how to disable updates on Windows 10 and the crowd was just getting unruly and saying how this or that don't work because they all tried it.

Needless to say that event started very late.

I just wanted to say that I find this sentence shockingly accurate. Here are two pictures for reference - how Polish versions of GOG and Pop_OS look like.

Maybe it's not broken because there was no sarcasm in my post.
GOG is a relatively niche store with one huge advantage over the competition (no DRM) that most consumers don't care about. It has either no support or small support from big publishers and user experience is a hit or miss.

What I meant was the state of translation. Part of the interface being in Polish (as expected) while the other, noticeable part still being in English.
