Hello All! I am having difficulty installing/playing RCT2 on my Mac OX Sierra. After downloading OpenRCT2.app it prompts to locate the game folder file, in which after purchasing the game here on GOG, it did not give me a game folder file, but only a "setup_rollercoaster_tycoon2_2.0.0.6.exe" with a blank white page as it's icon. And once double clicking the OpenRCT2.app and does it's prompt, I am unable to select the game folder because there is not one.
I have also come to a dead end with using the Patch using Wine/Wine Bottler. The patch I did download does not appear in the WineTricks portion of the WineBottler prefix window. However I have seen reviews that now a days you don'e need a patch??
I am not an expert with computers but am confident getting my way around typically. This has been a big hurdle for me. I am wondering if I need to downgrade my OS from Sierra perhaps?? I have watched dozens of YouTube videos but nothing mentions OS Sierra, and neither do their displays look remotely the same to mine when I do step by step which is why I am getting lost.
If any of you know what to do or have come across similar issues please let me know!!

Thank You,
Wayne

I actually wasn't aware of the existence of OpenRCT2; I'd usually just run the game in WINE. I do have the game myself, and fully intend to post a tutorial or a guide to help you out, but I won't be able to get around to it until later tomorrow.

Looking at the RCT 2 "app" file it's not nearly as big as it needs to be so I'm assuming whatever you're using simply created a wrapper without anything actually in it. Did it even attempt to run the installer? RCT 2 takes roughly 750MB of space on its own.

For extracting game files and to run GOG installers I typically use a dummy wrapper I made with Wineskin. After running the setup file for a game such as that all I do is copy the needed data from within the wrapper to a different location. For RCT 2 all I did was move out the entire game folder as OpenRCT 2 needs to be pointed to it. Yes, you actually need to point to the fully extracted game folder for this source port. I can't think of any that can work with a separate app package. In any case, the innards should look something like this after right-clicking the app-wrapper and click on "open package contents."

By the way, to install a Windows GOG game you should have seen something pop up similar to the second picture I just added. If you haven't seen and followed its prompts then it most definitely didn't install.

You should definitely give OpenRCT2 a try then. It's still very much a work in progress, but what's there is already much better for playing on Mac than using Wine for it. I suggest downloading the launcher as it automatically downloads the newest version available. It also allows you to choose from development updates or just the latest stable version from the launcher options.

Hello rampancy, after watching the dozens of youtube videos I have been trying all of their suggestions like the OpenRCT2, Wine, ext. I am so confused now in what I actually need and perhaps what the order of operations are because I've downloaded so many converters and crack/trick/patch fixes my mind is about to explode hahaha. I'd love to watch your video in how you install it correctly without it playing with any glitches.
I have actually been able to play the game but with the glitches. The patch which was suggested I couldn't get to work since I wasn't given a game folder from GOG to begin with and drop the patch within the game folder. Let me know how to search for your installation guide

Hm if i understood your problem right:

Id recommend Wineskin, its quite easy to set up and the programs are self contained...

f you only need the installed game files for the OpenRCT app you could use any Wineskin Wrapper you want...

To get a Wrapper you'd need the Winery, which is mostly a managing app for different Wine engine versions and to create new blank wrappers:

http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads

Start it and then there should be a text saying new engine version available - get one.
After downloading an engine using Winery (any should work for your purposes) create a new empty wrapper (usually located in /User/Applications, not the real applications folder for some reason.

Locate it and just alt-double click on the wrapper and a menu should appear with an "install new software" (or something) button.

After clicking on the "install new software" button you'd be prompted to select the game installer/your exe. - the one you got from GOG.

Let it run through the install process (will most likely end with some error message - has been happening for a while with gog installers, dont worry though, the installation should be finished).

After that you would need to right click on the wineskin wrapper, select show package contents, search for the c-drive directory in it and copy over the game folder to some place were the openrt app could find it, i guess, haven't played RCT myself.

If you haven't tried it yet and dont feel comfy with setting up wine/wineskin manually you could always try the porting kit: http://paulthetall.com/portingkit-2/

Its essentially a collection of install script for wine apps which also installs the necessary dependencies and a Wine version that should be working. Only used it a few times so far because usually Wineskin works fine for me but it might be worth a try, quite a lot of work that went into that i think. RCT2 seems to be included.

Hello, thank you for responding. Yes I have been able to run the installer but the intro visuals are broken along with other visual aspects throughout the game, as expected. However all the audio parts as of now are working perfectly. I have experienced your second attachment picture and am able to play the game but experience the issues discussed with the visuals. The RCT2 "app" is roughly that amount of MB space, when I double click on it it prompt to locate the game files folder, which I never received when purchasing the game. All I got from GOG was the "setup_rollercoaster_tycoon2_2.0.0.6.exe".

As for the "wineskin" portion, my current OS is not El Capitan OS X, it is Sierra 10.12.2 which is the OS after El Capitan and am wondering if this may be the ultimate source to the problem here. However on that URL it says that "Wineskin does not currently work correctly on El Capitan...Some people have been able to upgrade to the latest version of XQuartz, and change their wrappers to use XQuartz and not WineskinX11 and have gotten wrappers to work, but this method has not worked for everyone."

The innards of what I have are nothing like what your first attachment shows. All I literally have is the "set-up....exe" file which is what GOG gives me after I click their icon to download the purchased game. As well as have downloaded this "patch" from Atari's website for the exact issues I am encountering http://support.atari.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/28/16/rollercoaster-tycoon-2-patch
I have also downloaded this patch as well http://www.rctstationarchive.com/downloads/patches.shtml , again I am pretty confused on how to implement any of these patches since I do not have a RCT2 game folder.

Overall I am believing this is where I am having the most difficulty in this process...where you say "After running the setup file for a game such as that all I do is copy the needed data from within the wrapper to a different location. For RCT 2 all I did was move out the entire game folder as OpenRCT 2 needs to be pointed to it. Yes, you actually need to point to the fully extracted game folder for this source port."

Thank You for all of your steps!! That was really helpful and clear to understand. Unfortunately, I am still experiencing the same visual errors in the intro and in game play. I assume the patch I've downloaded from Atari's website needs to be imputed somehow...http://support.atari.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/28/16/rollercoaster-tycoon-2-patch

I have placed the patch in the GOG Games folder along with the "set-up game file" but that's it.

I've also never been prompted in the installation the screen which states now I want to install, i.e. to select custom install and select full install. I've never experienced this.

Update: After watching another YouTube video which uses WineBottler, I noticed I may have actually corrupted my RCT2 game file by double clicking it...before replacing the "no CD patch" (rct2.exe) with the original. I am currently deleting everything I have done to start from scratch. Boy is this annoying. I've left everything in the trashcan and not permanently deleted.
...And this didn't do shit.

wayneolds: Overall I am believing this is where I am having the most difficulty in this process...where you say...
So it sounds like it did install RCT2 within a wrapper somehow. So try this:
- right click on the app that starts the game for you
- click on "show package contents"
- try to look for a folder within that structure that should be titled "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Triple Thrill Pack"; it may be buried several folders deep depending on how your wrapper did the install method
- if you find it all you need to do then is copy/move it to a designated place of your choosing and then point OpenRCT 2 to that folder so it can access the game files

So I did some tinkering around with OpenRCT2 on my own Mac (MacBook 2,1; OS X 10.7.5). OpenRCT2 runs really well; better than I expected, in fact. The only issues I've encountered is that the menu music seems to get a little corrupted after a few minutes of looping. That and OpenGL doesn't work. However, the corruption only lasts for a few seconds, and the game runs plenty fast without OpenGL anyway, even on my GMA 950. First...

1. You don't need to apply any patches to the game. The game is already patched to its latest official version by GOG and Hasbro/Infogrames/Atari.

2. Any official/unofficial patches affect the Windows app (RCT2.EXE). Since we're not going to use the Windows app (we're going to use OpenRCT2), we don't need to worry about that.

3. Here's a rough guide to what we'll do: OpenRCT2 needs the data files (the files containing the game assets like the graphics, sounds, music, etc.) to work. The problem is that the data files are inside an installer (setup_rollercoaster_tycoon2_2.0.0.6.exe, which you downloaded after buying it from GOG) than can only run in Windows. We're going to use Wineskin to create a Mac app (Called a "Wrapper") that will run the installer (using WINE, a software package that imitates Windows). After we get the installer to run, we can take the data files, put in our copy of OpenRCT2, and we'll be all set.

Steps

1. Download and install Wineskin Winery. To save time, I'll quote ignisferroque's instructions (with some changes):
avatar
ignisferroque: http//wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads

Start it and then there should be a text saying new engine version available - get one.

After downloading an engine using Winery (any should work for this purpose), create a new empty Wrapper (usually located in ~/Applications). The default name is "MyCoolWrapper".

Locate it and just double-click on the wrapper and a menu should appear with an "Install New Software" button.

After clicking on the "Install New Software" button you'd be prompted to select the game installer/your exe - the one you got from GOG.

Let it run through the install process. (This will most likely end with some error message - this has been happening for a while with GOG installers. Don't worry though, the installation should be finished).
When the installer finishes, click Cancel. DO NOT tell the game to immediately run. Afterward, Wineskin will ask you what .exe to use; just click Okay.

2. Right-click/Ctrl-click on your Wrapper (named "MyCoolWrapper"). Click on "Show Package Contents". Now, go to drive_c > GOG Games > RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Triple Thrill Pack.

The folder "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Triple Thrill Pack" is the folder with all of the data files you need. Copy it to your desktop.

3. Go to https://openrct2.org/downloads and download the Mac OS X version of OpenRCT2. The build I used is 0.0.7-developb3b5631. In case there are problems, there's also a direct download link too.

Double-click on the zip file (OpenRCT2-0.0.7.0-develop-b3b5631-macos.zip) to expand it. By default it should be in your ~/Downloads folder. What you should have is a Mac app named OpenRCT2.

(An auto-updating launcher is also available, which is supposed to automatically update your version of OpenRCT2 to the latest build. Unfortunately, it crashes on launch for me.)

4. Put your OpenRCT2 app into the "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Triple Thrill Pack" folder on your desktop. Double-click OpenRCT2 to play. When you first launch the game, it will ask you where the data files are; navigate to the "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Triple Thrill Pack" folder on your desktop, and click Okay.

Once you have OpenRCT2 running, you can move the "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Triple Thrill Pack" folder to wherever you wish on your computer. You no longer need the Wrapper your made earlier ("MyCoolWrapper"), so you can safely delete it in the Trash.

And there's my tutorial! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
