Fantasysci5: I did. Unfortunately, it's not a GOG game so I can't check GOG settings, and the game wouldn't crash for me, would just keep going with the black screen and audio. I'm not rally sure where I would change Direct X to 3Dfx. Sorry I'm not too intuitive about these kinds of things.
And I don't have the game so I can only guess ;)

I found that it was supposed to work on W95, did you already set the compatibility mode to W95?

The option for this shall be in the graphics options in the game or in the setup. If you do not see anything like that, nothing to do with it.

It really just sounds with a problem of WIn 10.....You did check for the media audio wrapper?

I did try it with Win95, wouldn't even bring up the game. The graphic options in game are very minimal. I have no idea how to check a media audio wrapper, how would I go about doing that? Also, <3 and lots of +1 for you.

Do you have VLC installed?

Try it and let me know.

So W95 didn't work, was just a try.

EDIT:

I will never shut up, just ask Zeo.

I do, I adore VLC and that was the player I uninstalled to see if it helped. It didn't, so it's back on.

OK, check the part at middle/bottom, you will have to adapt this to your layout though, stupid Win10.....

It looks like that Win10 is stopping it from passing through (same what I have in mind what we resolved already.....but still no luck finding it here on GOG......

And can somebody get this person out here? Who did let him in anywaaaaaay ;)

We didn't start the Zeo,
He was always punnin'
Since the web's been runnin'
We didn't start the Zeo,
We did not invite him,
Though we tried to fight him...

Sorry i can't really help, other than show sympathy and say that to me old Windows games using .mov are usually quite problematic. I had somewhat similar issues with e.g. Wheel of Time which also uses .mov files for cutscenes, already in Windows 7/64bit. First the cutscenes would be simply skipped (otherwise the game worked fine), but later installing the latest Quicktime/iTunes (not the one that came with the game) allowed me to at least see to cutscenes... but they'd run erratically, showing every 10th frame or something, like a slideshow. Audio worked fine in cutscenes.

Installing e.g. VLC doesn't really affect it I think, my understanding is the VLC is fully self-contained (ie. it doesn't install additional codecs that would be utilized by the rest of the system?).

Actually interesting enough, for me .mov is associated with media player (default), never encountered a problem as I use drag and drop.
And depending which version you download, you have to download codecs as well (IIRC). So long ago that I had to install my VLC.

Thanks for the sympathy, I appreciate it. I can view the cutscenes out of game, so I guess I can watch them and then go back in game. Though trying to figure out where in the game directory the specific file is may be a pain. :)

I did some more checking

Interesting enough your game did NOT work in Win7 either, only after KB976264, but unfortunate not any details around.

For q quicker find option, instead of using the cursed Win-sh.....

open cmd (if you do not know, ignore ;)

go to the drive were your games are installed
cd \
dir *.mov /s /p

This will search the whole harddisk for files ending with *.mov and stop after each full page till you press any key

EDIT: If you want to limit the results change into a subdirectory with cd mygames (example ;) )

Thanks goodaltgamer! It's looking that's what I'm going to have to do. It makes me appreciate GOG even more, making the older games run on newer machines better.
