babark: Why is belief in a concept a prerequisite for you to experience a piece of media?
I don't believe in wizards or dragons or time travel (beyond 1s/s) or zombies or uploading consciousness into the cloud, but that doesn't stop me from experiencing media which involves those themes and concepts.
Wizards, zombies, and dragons are obviously fictional to any sane person. There are people who profess belief in wizards (e.g. fundamentalist Christians), but they don't
really believe in wizards. In civilized countries, there are no laws which allow wizard-hunters to kill wizards, and no one (not even fundamentalist Christians) is campaigning for such laws.
Gender identity is likewise a completely fictional (bullshit) concept. However, it's presented as real in the media, and many people "learn" it by osmosis,
and start believing in it. This belief has been enshrined into law in many countries and became a de facto prerequisite for holding political office or, in some cases, holding a private sector job or
finishing school. Therefore, producing such content is irresponsible and borderline evil.
No, You Can't Separate Fact from Fiction There are government media watchdogs and self-regulating media organizations which oppose harmful fictional content that can put children in danger. If you made a cartoon about children fucking with the wiring and opening a portal to another world, they'd tell you to edit it. Disney recently edited a scene in the movie Lilo and Stitch in which Lilo hides in a dryer, out of concern that children try to imitate it and hide in a dryer. While I think Disney only did it our of fear of lawsuits, the concern is real and not unfounded. It's why ads have "These stunts are performed by trained professionals, don't try this at home" and "professional driver, closed course" for adults.
Now, I don't think clearly fantastical concepts should be regulated. Children who are young enough to believe in wizards hold many other stupid beliefs and need to be watched by adults regardless of whether they plan to drink all the magical potions in the cupboard.
The public is not well-informed about gender identity. Many people don't know it's bullshit. Many people believe in gendered brains. Many people think surgical castration is a prerequisite for being officially transgender and getting fake papers -- it's not true throughout the Western world. Many people think transgenders are gay (they're majority straight), look like the opposite sex in real life (no) and therefore seamlessly blend and belong with the opposite sex (no). Many people think chemical castration and a drastically shortened lifespan is better for their children than being unpopular in high school.
The gender identity lobby in the US is represented by Democrats, who'll be shortly holding office and are supported by roughly 50% of the voters. Imagine if performing driving stunts on public roads became legal and was practiced by 50% of drivers.
Imagine your surgeon learned surgery by playing Operation. Not cool, right? And yet, similar qualifications are held by parents and education workers, who then proceed to fuck up the children in their care.
Or put it that way: would a book in which evil Jews drank the blood of innocent Christian babies be "ok" because "everyone" understood it was fiction?
TL;DR I wish this craze fades and we can once again fap to Ranma in peace.
