If you're playing Quake 1 in DOS:

1) Go into your ID1 folder and create the file autoexec.cfg .

2) Open your autoexec.cfg file in a text editor and input the following text:

+mlook

3) Save and close the autoexec.cfg file.

You will now have mouselook for aiming.

To set up WASD:

1) Open Quake

2) Go to Options --> Customize Controls (in DOS) or Controls (in sourceports)

---

If you are using a sourceport, such as DarkPlaces or Quakespasm, you have mouselook by default and you usually can set up WASD via Options --> Controls

you mean crosshair?

"crosshair 1" without the quotes in the console via the ~ key.
or put "crosshair 1" without quotes in autoexec.cfg.

https://quake.fandom.com/wiki/Quick_Weapon_Selection

Although the above link is for Quake 3, it's the same basic idea.

this is complicated for me
I would just install the mod Quakespasm to make it easy. It should help you get the music working as well. http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/

1) Go to quakespasm.sourceforge.net

2) Click on "Manifestation"

3) Select Windows (32 bit) or Windows (x64), depending upon what processor your computer has.

4) Download and extract the files.

5) Copy the ID1 folder from your Quake 1 GOG installation and place it in Quakespasm's folder.

You should now have the ID1 folder under your Quakespasm folder.

6) Double-click on the Quakespasm.exe (not the SDL one).

Mouselook is enabled by default, so you will not have to do anything to configure that.

7) To configure controls, go to Options -> Controls

8) To enable music, copy the music folder from your Quake 1 GOG installation and put it within the ID1 folder.

For example: Quakespasm\ID1\music

The music files themselves can be FLAC, OGG, and if I remember correctly, mp3 as well.

If CD / external music has not been already enabled, go to Options -> External Music and set that to "On".
