Those fuckers did something right for once...
I love both KOTOR games but #2 was a rush job. You are weighing the cooler options and characters against the fact that they flat out didn't finish the damn thing.

Emachine9643: Oh their two different types of game..... That changes things then=)
Not that much, but System Shock 2 has some additional RPG-like features on it IMHO, like different "skills" and how you improved them throughout the game, and they mattered quite a lot how well you'd do in the game.

I personally liked the first System Shock better. There was just some things in SS2's gameplay that irritated me, and I liked SS atmosphere better.
Overall a good selection, I do not agree with everything and would have undoubtedly ordered it differently but most of the games that should be there were. It seemed like they were picking one game per franchise but then a couple got two games on the list which seemed weird - if you are having multiple games per franchise then there were definitely some major oversights.
The list is not surprising. PS:T is still the best. I'm just sad that Daggerfall wasn't even on the list.

Their criteria, as outlined on the first...slide??(I really hate these scrolling picture article lists) focused more on what games they found fun to play today, right now, that they could recommend to someone immediately, rather than games with historical significance. Which is why they might not include games like Daggerfall, and why games that were incredibly buggy on release but have had fan mods and such improve them are counted, and those things are put in their favour.
OT, 'Hatred' made Yahoos worst of the year list, and it WASN'T because of the subject matter. :P

MarioFanaticXV: On the bright side, at least they had the common sense to include KotOR2 and not the first game.
avatar
Breja: Yeah, the broken, unfinished one. That clearly makes sense.

Don't get me wrong, I love both KotORs, but if I had to pick oneo ver the other, it would be the first one. The second one had all the makings of a superior game, but in the form it was released it isn't, not even close. An yeah, I know- plyer mods, restored content, yadda yadda. Mods are great, but they really should not count in such comparisons.
I'd rather have an unfinished good game than a finished one that was just plain bad. The first one felt like there was nothing really connecting the planets you visited other than the Star Maps, and there really wasn't much plot in the game... It's acceptable for a two hour Star Wars movie to have that little plot, you can't fit much into two hours, but a fifteen to twenty hour game should have a lot more than it did. And that being said, there was a lot of stuff removed from the first game as well- why doesn't it get criticized for such? At least what was left behind of 2 was still a great game.

Shit man, is Need For Speed on the list!? XD
hmm Interesting! Can Need for Speed be a RPG?
Let's take Need for Speed Underground into consideration

You create a character (pick a car) and through a series of quests (races) you gain experience (money) which you use on skills (upgrades) for your character (car) to overcome the challenge offered by the game (become the best racer in the world).

Yes. Need for Speed Underground is a RPG and should be on the list.
And yes, I'm drunk.

Don't forget you also get to change the body, color, and vinyl of the car. :D
Is that Underground you do that? I get confused. I think it is.

Klumpen0815: Why do you say that?
I meant gameplay, not graphics, if that's what you're implying. The graphicsare fine, although in combat it does sometimes become a chaotic mob o pixels, especially with large groups in tight spaces.

I was never a fan of those games. They felt cluttered, I never felt fully at ease playing them. It always felt like swimming up river, fighting the game, rules and mechanics that seemed ill-fitting. Combat felt all wrong, way to chaotic and unwieldy when it should be way more tactical and turn based. I can actually make a whole list of recent games that feel way more like D&D, despite not being D&D, than the Infinity Engine games. The pages upon pages of unvoiced dialogue also kill me. Don't get me wrong, I don't need everything read to me, it's just that the voiceless empty silence while I read all that is killing me. And a lot of D&D did not work well in the form it was translated to a game, like running out of spells, and resting all the goddamn time.

I don't know, maybe I'm all wrong. It's just my issues and pet peeves, I always had issues with those games, and never got into them despite trying again and again. If I played one again I'd probably be reminded of a dozen other things that piss me off.

Troika developed 3 games and 2 of them are in this list. Great achievement. Black Isle and its descendants (Obsidian and Troika) owned this list. My favorite developers.
