JK41R4: I guess it really just depends on how deep your pockets are. If I could play the same games with good performance, I wouldn't really care.

Hmm, now that I think about it, won't the 8th gen be likely to end in 3-5 more years?
maybe
the last console generation was an abberation
normally a console generation lasts 4 to 5 years maybe 6 before a succesor is released
there wil be some overlap but usually it means that the old console is a dead console walking
the nes
ps1
and ps2 were the odd ones out because they each lasted for over a decade

untill the seventh gen which is still an ongoing concern
the ps3 is still alive and still has games produced for it even if its pretty threadbare
...kinda like the wii U line up then
but the ps3 still has the following titles coming
batman the telltale series
blazblue central fiction
handball 17
fifa 17
just dance 2017
kings quest ( that new one )
skylanders imaginators
doodle kingdom
tokyo twillight

so the 7th generation is still an ongoing concern
the 360 has a similar line up

anyway the 8th gen is going to try something new
mid generation updates
if they all are like the ps4 pro then you can skip em

I think if we just got another upgraded PS4 or two more, Publishers, Devs and Gamers alike might be genuinely pissed.
Though I'd be interested in seeing how Devs deal with the different versions of the same console with different specs.

TT_TT_TT_TT: well dunno i'm kinda glad that the ps4 pro will kinda push VR - not in the sense that the PS4 Pro VR will be ultra amazing (i'm not interested in it at all personally) but rather in the sense that finally a "bigger" group will have the same VR solution and this may push games and improvements for second and third generation VR a bit more (atm i'm not interested in any VR - not even in the Vive and just watching the market and development right now - but well in 1 or 2 generations i may be - obviously on pc then though)
Doubt it, i'll put the VR as another fad, it's like kinectic, why would people invest a lot of money for "experiences"? Besides, what you're saying applies to a ninche market, you can't push the VR with the PS4 Pro considering that we're talking about spending 400e for the console and another 400e for PSVR (not to say that i do believe that you need to purchase the camera and move controllers).

Can't speak for the majority but i find it funny how the Pro/Scorpio are intended to stop the gamers from moving up to pc but it feels the opposite. Besides being easy to set up and play, one of the advantages of consoles was everyone getting the same experience, now that's gone, why even bother purchasing PS5 when 3 years later the PS5Pro will appear? Why bother with a Xbox console when their exclusives are on pc?

doubt developers will care much
they care about the bottom line
and the bottom line is that there are at least 40 to 47 million base ps4's out there
the pro will be a blip on their radar and unless it suddenly shifts tot he tune of 10 million which is a number they cant ignore
the developers wil just code for the base ps4 and some may release upgrade packs for the pro

Yeah, but I'm still wondering if there are other reasons for the Mid-gen upgrades. They can't really have sold +40M units and been worried about people jumping ship to PC.

Hard to say, i'll assume that:

Microsoft is desperate due to the fuckups of Mattrick so they probably went with the idea of a more powerful console so that maybe it would reinvigorate in the interest in the brand, ps4 users could purchase it for MS exclusives AND third party games (that would run better), a new hardware in the block could also generate interest from other people. From my point of view this was a good gamble IF they didn't throw everything out of the window by putting their exclusives on pc.

Sony probably was worried that Microsoft could gain advantage with this so they decided to do their own thing and repeat their sucessful strategy, release it first and cheaper than the competition. Will it work? Who knows, i think that the Slim will sell better than the Pro since it's cheaper and it will come packed with more games.

The whole "jumping" to pc might be just a dumb excuse, PC is a better platform not because it has more power or because you can upgrade it, it's just a better ecosystem, you get better deals, better (free) online infrastructure and it's more friendly towards gamers+developers, if console manufacturers were worried about pc gaining momentum they would have focused in improving those points.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Ah, Mattrick, entirely forgot about that guy. I guess it might be a good strategy on their part. Putting their exclusives on PC may not have been a bad idea, since you'll still be dealing with the Windows Store.

Yep, all we can do now is wait and see. I'm pretty interested in seeing how all this unfolds.

And don't forget the massive library of games.
