The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

Anyone who has already pre-ordered the game on GOG.com and wishes to ask for a refund can contact our support team directly.

We will be updating this post with the new release date, once it is provided.

---Original post follows---

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is now available for pre-order on GOG.com. Grab it now to get three DLC for free: Adol's Adventure Essentials, a Mini Art Book, and a Soundtrack Sampler.
Ready for a new round of exciting, party-based trouble? Adol and co. get stranded on a mysterious island where ferocious beasts roam. When a blue-haired beauty starts calling to our hero in his dreams, it's time for them to build a village and set out to undo the island's curse.

The free DLC offer will last for one week after release.

I don't have anything against delays due necessary improvements but they can't say that they realized one day before release that the game is a buggy mess. Some people might have bought the game shortly before release to get the DLCs for free. Now the game is delayed to a date unknown. If these customer knew earlier about it, they might have spend that money elsewhere for this month. Kindly the developer offers a refund. That doesn't mean that I want a refund but I also understand those people who want some. More transparency on the side of the developer would have been good.

Can anyone who bought this please confirm that it isn't actually available yet? The store page still shows it as available now (as in released, not pre-order), so what happens if someone actually buys it?

If you buy it, the game gets added to your library, but the links in the download sections are inactive. Haven't tried it in Galaxy yet, but I assume it won't install.

Anyway, delays suck, but unlike the stuff Warner Bros pulled with Arkham Knight, I can respect the decision to delay a release in order to iron out bugs. (while I'm personally rooting for Falcom to give XSeed first dibs on their future releases from now on, I do understand that NISA won't want a broken Ys VIII port to be compared side-by-side with XSeed's high-quality Cold Steel port that came out last month) Especially on Gog, which frequently lags behind Steam in patch updates, you really don't want an unplayable Day1 build because Aidios knows how long you'll have to wait before the latest updates arrive here.

I didn't honestly know that the game was going to be release so shortly, this makes thing a bit different.
I still think that this was the wiser decision, although for sure they could have done so way sooner.

All that matters now is that the port will be of good quality. I don't have my hopes high as long the translation goes (NISA is well known for using machine translations along internet memes, something which I truly hate as a purist), at least the store says that there is the japanese interface too (other than the japanese voices), which is a plus to me.

I really love how XSeed put their efforts in translations and features (I remember how some Ys and Trails games had some features added exclusive to the west releases). Still what I find funny is that this time around we are getting the Japanese voices for this game. The majority of the times XSeeds localize a game, they don't keep the japanese voices, unfortunately.

XSeed has quite a few games where they kept the Japanese voices in, like Corpse Party (they stated they keep them in whenever they're an option), it's just that most of the games the localizer is known for around these parts were all made by the same company around the same time period. (that is, before the western market became worth paying attention to, even Cold Steel was developed before Trails in the Sky FC made waves on Steam and Gog) The VA contracts of those games were never written up with an international release in mind and couldn't be renegotiated. An important reason Ys VIII has Japanese voices in the west is because Falcom was already keeping an international release in mind when they cast the local voice actors.

Anyway, during Cold Steel 1's release, there were several purists rooting for Falcom to give its games to NISA from now on, so the games would have higher odds of having Japanese audio even if it resulted in a localization of lesser quality. From what I've heard, the localization and the dub ARE more bland than what XSeed would usually produce, so it looks like said purists got their wish. Time will tell how noticable the localization and technical aspect/support differ.

Ugh...When I used the term "purist" I didn't mean in such a way, but translation wise. I started learning japanese for a few years, and since I like to translate stuff from time to time, I have noticed how localizations do a horrendous work most of the times (notabily NISA).

I honestly can't follow nor understand the mentality of having the japanese dub at the cost of a bad translation.
As I said previously, at least NISA provides most of the times the japanese interface, so I could go with that, worst case scenario (aka I find unbearable the english localization).

Another thing to note is that usually XSeeds avoid at all cost censorship (when possible), while NISA is known to have no regards for that.

Just to be clear, since I'm getting a bit confused, the Cold Steel you are talking about is the one which just showed up on GOG recentily?

Gurlok: I'm honestly fine with the game being delayed. It's much better to wait for a polished game than to play a game in a broken state, with possibily gamebreaking bugs or heavy performance issues.

As long NISA will support the GOG release on par with the steam one I have no regrets.

It's such a shame though, being the first NISA licensed game to come on GOG and receive a dalay...I really hope that this will not demotivate NISA for trying the GOG platform.
That's great, but they couldn't figure out the game wasn't ready for release BEFORE the day prior to launch? What was the thinking? "Game's almost ready, game's almost ready, game's almost ready... CARL, why is that massive bug list we gave you not handled?! DAMMIT CARL!"

I'm more worried about how the port will turn out. I mean, until now (steam side) we received the most famous NIS games such as Disgaeas, Phantom brave and the likes which don't require extra work, as they are light games, but this is the first "heavy" port made from NISA.

I do wonder if they are leaving the porting job to some team or if NISA is doing that themselves.

Still a move like this made 1 day prior to release is worriesome...
I'd rather wait than having a buggy game, but the late notice is really bad form.
No worry...It's just to give time exclusivity to PS4...

It's disappointing but I can wait.

Another move made by sony you mean? While that can be completely possible, I wonder if it's the true reason, this time around.

I think that It's weird to announce a delay for technical reason only 12h before release.
But maybe the port is really crappy ATM XD

If I could choice, I'd like the former (fault of sony) than a crappy port XDDDD
