The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

Anyone who has already pre-ordered the game on GOG.com and wishes to ask for a refund can contact our support team directly.

We will be updating this post with the new release date, once it is provided.

devtek: It really doesn't have anything to do with Sony specifically most likely. The game is getting a retail release in physical stores. Despite a surge in digital sales, physical sales still make up a large part of the revenue for game companies.
They need to maintain the relationships with stores so they agree to have price parity with physical stores. Recent example: Ark Surival evolved, been $30 for like 2 years but once they get a physical release they bump it up to standard $60 price.
True, there's that too, which affects most bigger productions with traditional retail releases. Maybe it's a little of both, in this case, since it does seem to be Sony exclusive aside from the PC version. At least in the case of NMS, I'm pretty sure Sony was involved in certain decisions such as the release price point. It was a heavily hyped up game after all, perhaps even a system seller for Sony, and a significantly cheaper PC version might have lessened that appeal of the PS4 version.
Hooo boy.

PC version of the game got delayed, no new release date yet. Game is apparently pretty damn buggy right now, so it needed some extra time in the oven. Hopefully, they resolve whatever issues plague this thing, but giving 24 hour notice on this is poor form.

Oh well, as long as the game is still slated for this year, I'm good.

"We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Is that PR English for "Holy shit, it's a buggy broken mess -- If we release it like this, customers will set our studio on fire!"

Generally I don't mind delayed releases; I mean, it's disappointing, but no one wants to play a broken video game. On the other hand, they thought the game was polished enough to put it up for pre-order and have people pay up front, and not a small sum either, so I suspect many customers will be angry about this.
On one side I prefer that a devs push back a release to polish it rather than releasing the game as and incomplete or buggy mess, but on the other side the fact that they are not even confident enough to announce a new date yet is not very reassuring.

Hope they will fix it and not pull and Arkham Knight and release the game still half broken after months of fixes.

Yeah, I think they handled it poorly, but it's good that they're not releasing a buggy mess. Presumably. I like Ys, and I want the PC version of this to be a worthy addition.

CharlesGrey: no one wants to play a broken video game.
I'd argue that this isn't entirely true. Sure, I wouldn't expect someone to pay $60 for a broken game, but sometimes, particularly if the game is free, it might be fun to play around with a broken video game, at least for a short time. Consider the game Big Rigs; might it be fun(ny), at least at first, to try playing the game, drive through a bridge (through rather than over because of the complete lack of collision detection), and then go backwards at speeds exceeding that of light? (I wouldn't pay for Big Rigs, however.)

On the other hand, this statement is probably mostly true; it's just that it's not *entirely* true.
Thank God I didn't preorder. This is giving me No Man's Sky flashbacks.

I see your point -- I guess it's similar to movies which are "so bad, they're good". Some bugs, especially minor visual glitches, can be pretty funny. But game-breaking bugs, which keep you from completing a game, are rarely entertaining, especially at this price level.

No Man's Sky is precisely the reason why I consider pre-orders a no-go ( especially for digital releases ), and why I'm hesitant to pay that much for a single game. ( And I'm saying that as someone who didn't even "hate" NMS, but overall it was definitely a sobering experience. )

Does gog offer refunds like steam in cases like this? I bought the game like 8 hours ago. I didn´t find any information on any such possibilities on their support page, so I guess my chances are slim.

Yeah, you can get a refund for pre-orders at any time before the game's release:
https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/articles/212805385-11-What-about-pre-orders-
Now the question is whether they're going to extend the period that the DLCs are free.
NISA has offered full, no questions asked refunds for anyone who wants them. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to do this, what they did was unacceptable and HIGHLY unprofessional and they deserve to be punished for it.
I'm honestly fine with the game being delayed. It's much better to wait for a polished game than to play a game in a broken state, with possibily gamebreaking bugs or heavy performance issues.

As long NISA will support the GOG release on par with the steam one I have no regrets.

It's such a shame though, being the first NISA licensed game to come on GOG and receive a dalay...I really hope that this will not demotivate NISA for trying the GOG platform.
