The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

gibbeynator: If you haven't gotten your refund for this yet, you should get on that. Make NISA pay for stealing Ys out from under XSEED, releasing a shoddy product and screwing up the PC port this badly.
I got my refund today . Already waited enough and can't wait more ... They lost their chance I won't care.

RawSteelUT: Though it says something about how horrible NIS is in general the Idea Factory left them behind and just said "screw it, we'll release our games ourselves here." NIS actually published the original PS3 versions of the Neptunia games in the US, and they were apparently just as bad as everything else they put out.
Wow I did not know this.
I lost all my hope for Ys VIII now :(

I'm sure Ys VIII will at least be okay, but only because Falcom's on NIS' ass now.

Bigs: And they won't be missed

RawSteelUT: If this is their attitude, yeah. It's bad enough I can't play most big-budget PC games due to DRM nonsense, I don't need to deal with a publisher that gives no fucks about professionalism just shitting out a mess.

It would be hilarious if Falcom did the same thing, and established themselves internationally because of this. Though it seems unlikely given the company's lower profile, it would still give a few people chuckles if it happened.
It looks worse than WoW in 2004. How on earth is it possible to fuck up a port so hard.

Let's face it, it's NISA. If they didn't have Disgaea, they would have disappeared a long time ago. I'm not saying XSEED would have gotten the PC port out faster, but they more than likely wouldn't have announced a release date without actually finishing the port first.

Just about. At least XSEED would have gotten the PS4 version right the first fucking time, and wouldn't have Falcom circling them like crows to make sure they don't fuck up even more. Seriously, when people get tired of Disgaea, they're going to flame out so gloriously and I can't fucking wait.
There's a new release date of April 16:

Not holding my breath...
Just in time for it to get buried by Yakuza 6, Labo and God of War. Frankly, given how NISA has treated this release, it deserves to get lost in the shuffle.
I know you guys are bitter (rightfully so) but please do not let NISA's fuckups distract you from what is otherwise a GREAT game.

Yeah, people who played the ps4 version have been over the moon about it. I'm not optimistic that the port will be in great shape when it launches this month, but I'm pretty sure it'll be worth the wait when it IS finished.

Aye, i am one of the ps4 ppl. Archeozoic Big Hole and everything. But for me it was GOTY 2017 and for good reason. Hell i'll prolly double dip at some point, despite owning the physical limited edition. It really is THAT good. :)
It's exciting for me, because I was super worried that expanding the scope of the game so much would hurt it... but then the game launched, and people were calling Ys 8 the best in the series. Cool.
