The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

Notably...

First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
Random crashes
Framerate
Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.

We have a good understanding of what is currently causing issues 1 and 2 and how to fix them, but because issues 1 and 2 are closely tied to gameplay, we are having trouble solving the issues permanently.

Issue 3 is taking more time than we estimated to fix because we require so much information to adequately understand what exactly is going wrong. Fixes in one area can lead to something breaking in another, and thus we have to take more time to fix these issues.

Resolving Issue 1 and 2 is estimated to take 2 weeks to fix. Once Issue 1 and 2 are fixed, we will proceed with Issue 3.
TL;DR - no fucking idea on a release

Seems that the new release estimate is mid-December now:

PC Version Release Update and Progress Report
It has been a while since our initial September 12th announcement, and we apologize for the delay in communication and would like to issue an update on progress for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC. We were taking our time to be absolutely sure we were delivering the most accurate and up-to-date information to you.

Since we last made an announcement, we have been working tirelessly on improvements and bug fixes. We considered the overall issues, obstacles that arose during debug, and the maximum resources we have to address them and concluded that it will take another two months for the Steam release to meet the expectations we set for ourselves and guarantee the quality that every Ys fan has come to expect. In addition, we will use this time to apply the updated localization to the game[nisamerica.com].

This means that we plan to release the PC version around mid-December. We were unfortunately unable to deliver a simultaneous release with the Steam and console versions and apologize for our delayed postponement announcement. We deeply and earnestly apologize for not upholding the promise of the original Steam release and not notifying the community about the delays sooner.

Despite our missteps, we remain committed to delivering the best possible quality experience. With that in mind, here are some details about what exactly we’ve been working on.

After we delayed the release of Ys VIII on Steam, we reached out to Peter "Durante" Thoman for his expertise, and we are happy to report that he could share some of his hours with our developers these past few weeks. We asked Durante for his help with the following for this title: GPU performance improvements, CPU performance improvements, and developing a system for improving and regulating framerate. We also received feedback from Durante about a shadow rendering issue that we are looking into.

The above work has resulted in significant improvements in performance. However, due to the fact that we are receiving such an overwhelming number of system issues from both our internal QA Team and our Beta testers, these issues will take considerable time to repair. As previously stated in our last announcement, fixes in one area can lead to something breaking in another, so we have to be methodical in our application of fixes and improvements. In addition to improvements in the game’s system, we are also updating, fixing, and improving the game text across the Japanese, English, and French versions. This also requires a significant amount of time, due to the size of the game and our commitment to localizing the text to both English and French.

After assessing all of these factors, we concluded that approximately two more months of development time is needed to reach the level of quality we and the fans want. We thank you for your constant feedback and again apologize for the inconsistent communication.
If you have made a pre-purchase on Steam and would like to get a refund, please use this link for information on how to refund a product on Steam. For any purchases or pre-orders made outside of the Steam platform, please contact the corresponding refund support for that platform.

We sincerely apologize for these delays and we humbly request your patience.
Best,
NISA Team

Just a crazy thought but maybe Sony paid them off to delay it on PC? after all the game has only been released on Sony platforms, yeah its crazy I know Beta testers said the game ran well enough that it just makes me think something else is going on. Well at this rate I'll just play a pirated copy on my PSTV and unless the PC version has so much more content I won't bother buying unless its 50% off. Guess we shouldn't be surprised at this as we sorta knew NISA was going to drop the ball on this, but damn they dropped it like it was hot... or maybe on purpose? *insert X-files music*

Nah, it's not a million seller or anything that would make Sony go crazy for. As for it only releasing on Sony platforms, well, it's a niche Japanese game and those usually don't get released on Xbox.

And I heard the diametrically opposite; that it was a crappy port, not fit for release. In fact, there were whispers of the crapiness of it, before its official delay announcement.

Well, I hope Falcom learned a lesson with this. They had a great thing going with XSEED and blew it by handing Ys over to NISA. Luckily, if this whole mess is anything to go by, NISA will never work with Falcom ever again.

Chacranajxy: Calm down.
No. People need to know about just how bad NISA is.

avatar
Ogdin: I'm sorry you feel so strongly about NISA and their business practices, also feel sorry how you have a Vita that isn't jail broken (its horrible I know) but at least you can buy the latest NISA release from GOG. Honestly if you want NISA to see "your opinion" email them, post on NISA twitter page but venting on this forum I'm 100% sure they won't see it and probably won't care.
My suggestion is if really want to stick it to them while not going too far piracy wise, buy the game on steam, downland it and give a very negative review and then use the crack on the game and refund it, you keep the game at no cost and you take a shit on NISA all at the same time.
I do appreciate you being (somewhat) civil (I still don't know if you're being sarcastic here). I admit, I was extremely hot headed about this but I was, frankly, quite pissed when I saw the news here. Though I cannot tell if you're being sarcastic about the Vita thing. I have a CFW of the Vita TV, though. I just keep my two Vitas updated since I play both NTSC and NTSC-J (one vita for each since it's a royal pain in the ass to change regions, requiring constant resetting).

I've emailed NISA many times and have left rather heated (but completely rational, unlike on here, I admit) comments on their facebook. Their defense force of idiots will always try to deflect any sort of problem I ever bring up. NISA does not care about any sort of criticism geared towards them. Their forums are also a dumpster fire of circlejerkers who refuse to listen to any of the issues I've brought up before:

-Like how Ar tonelico was poorly translated.
-Like how Ar tonelico 2 was *SO POORLY TRANSLATED* that a bunch of fans came together to form Project Metafalica, an Ar tonelico 2 relocalizaton project to retranslate everything. The script was *so poorly written* that there are a few famous conversations that make absolutely no sense.
-Like how Ar tonelico 2 had at least one game breaking bug in the *FINAL RELEASE* that was a part of a boss battle that was more than just a little important, even if it was optional (but mandatory to understand more of the game).
-Like how Mugen Soul Z had a complete game breaking bug in the end game dungeon, the main reason why the game would be replayed.
-Like how the Disgaea Triple Play Collection had a number of bugs and mistranslations that is completely unacceptable for games that have already been out for *years* before that.
-Like how Witch and the Hundred Knight on ps3 has a complete game crash and goes back to the XMB randomly. It may be intermittent but people have reported it happening 2 or more times in the course of an 80 hour game. And with how tough that game can get later on, that just sucks.
-Like how NISA has censored images before by either removing them entirely or modifying the images/text accordingly.

No one wants to listen to what I have to say because everyone wants to ride NISA's dick and refuse to look at reality. Western (especially USA) JRPG fans seem to think that boycotting a game when released in the West is a bad thing when that is furthest from the truth. It shows that people are willing to not put up with BS garbage that gets put out.

And why would he make plans to leave a very negative review, before he has even played the game. I mean, maybe it's actually... good?
This right here. Ys games, as a whole, are amazing. Most times I 100% support review bombing but in this case, I literally cannot bring myself to review bomb the game because it's Nihon Falcom. I *KNOW* the game is going to be amazing because they are amazing at what they do. If it ends up not amazing, then I would give a review saying if it was bad.

And now that I see this update, I'm 0% surprised. NISA at it again proving time and time again that they do not know how to code a game properly and are terrible at debugging. *slow clap* Keep being NISA.

I also hope that they are postponing it for the absolute shitstorm they stirred up with the fact that Ys VIII is translated so fucking badly that a petition was made and a letter sent to Nihon Falcom directly stating just how badly NISA has handled their IP. I seriously hope that NISA got told off by Nihon Falcom and fix the garbage translations they put out. It was pure eye cancer whenever I started playing the Vita version that I have.

See, if XSEED did the translations, even if I would not agree with their localization practices (I despise them), they would've done 1000% better than the pathetic attempt NISA gave out, which they always do. There's a reason why they bid so low, yet charge a fucking ridiculous amount of money for their games, and even more for the Collector's Editions.

I bet everyone who disagrees with me $5 that when NISA pulls this game out of their ass after the issues they are having with localizing it for PC, the game is *still* going to have bugs.

100% agree. I'm honestly mind boggled that Nihon Falcom doesn't know just how bad NISA's reputation is when it comes to poorly handling and treating a game frachise. *points to Disgaea* I think you meant "Falcom will never work with NISA ever again". Name order is context here. YOu're making it sound like Falcom are the bad guys and that NISA was the one who was shat on when it's obviously the other way around.

It seems the release date is set for January 30th.

https://www.oneangrygamer.net/2018/01/ys-viii-lacrimosa-dana-arrives-overhauled-localization-arrives-jan-30th/48865/

Hopefully it shows up here at the same time as Steam.
Looks like I picked a good time to get back into Trails In The Sky.
On an off topic note, does anyone know how the Atelier games are?
And it's been delayed yet again:

Fucks sake...
Yeesh talk about dropping the ball and treating PC gamers like Red-headed Step-children. This is why sales can be low for certain platforms.

Yep. I imagine NIS will retreat from PC after this debacle.

If this is their attitude, yeah. It's bad enough I can't play most big-budget PC games due to DRM nonsense, I don't need to deal with a publisher that gives no fucks about professionalism just shitting out a mess.

Though it says something about how horrible NIS is in general the Idea Factory left them behind and just said "screw it, we'll release our games ourselves here." NIS actually published the original PS3 versions of the Neptunia games in the US, and they were apparently just as bad as everything else they put out.
If you haven't gotten your refund for this yet, you should get on that. Make NISA pay for stealing Ys out from under XSEED, releasing a shoddy product and screwing up the PC port this badly.
