The publisher explains the game will be better for it.

Publishers NIS America Inc. have decided to postpone the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, which was originally planned for September 12.

In their note to the community they said:
"We regret to inform everyone that the release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC has been pushed back due to continued efforts in improving gameplay quality.

We sincerely apologize to our fans who have been looking forward to this release. Ultimately, our goal is for fans to enjoy a high-quality game. We are providing the extra care in the PC development of the game by taking time to enhance the overall quality of gameplay."

Recently, they elaborated on what's holding back the release saying:
"We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.
[...]
First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:
- Random crashes
- Framerate
- Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.
[...]
We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA"

Anyone who has already pre-ordered the game on GOG.com and wishes to ask for a refund can contact our support team directly.

We will be updating this post with the new release date, once it is provided.

---Original post follows---

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is now available for pre-order on GOG.com. Grab it now to get three DLC for free: Adol's Adventure Essentials, a Mini Art Book, and a Soundtrack Sampler.
Ready for a new round of exciting, party-based trouble? Adol and co. get stranded on a mysterious island where ferocious beasts roam. When a blue-haired beauty starts calling to our hero in his dreams, it's time for them to build a village and set out to undo the island's curse.

The free DLC offer will last for one week after release.

looks good
Geez. Are we sure Adol didn't crash NISA's release tug? /sarcasm

I was going to pre-order this until I had something come up. Was hoping to get it Friday, but at this rate I may just hold off on it. What a way to mishandle a release though. NISA should be ashamed. I don't blame GoG here for not releasing the download links or keeping quiet on the issue, given all that's going on, NISA may very well postpone the GoG release tomorrow.

Here's hoping the game gets the bugs worked out and released soon.
Things happen and I would rather they delay the release a tiny bit, than give us a broken mess.
Hopefully NISA decides to release the extras for the game while we're waiting for them to fix up the bugs before release - at least something to tide us over until the game arrives...

Also, NISA posted a more in-depth update on why we are still waiting for the game:

Hello Everyone,

Firstly, we’d like to thank everyone’s patience and understanding with the delayed PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA. We have not determined an official PC release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, but we will continue provide the community responsive updates for the release as they emerge.

We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the fans and beta testers for their feedback. We are deeply grateful for all of the constructive criticism and we will take the communities’ critiques to improve our PC porting in the future.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

We would now like to inform you all of what you can expect from us from here on out.

First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:

1) Random crashes
2) Framerate
3) Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.

We have a good understanding of what is currently causing issues 1 and 2 and how to fix them, but because issues 1 and 2 are closely tied to gameplay, we are having trouble solving the issues permanently.

Issue 3 is taking more time than we estimated to fix because we require so much information to adequately understand what exactly is going wrong. Fixes in one area can lead to something breaking in another, and thus we have to take more time to fix these issues.

Resolving Issue 1 and 2 is estimated to take 2 weeks to fix. Once Issue 1 and 2 are fixed, we will proceed with Issue 3.

We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.

Well, at least they are being honest about it. "We're not ready!"

Although, waiting until 12 hours until release to delay the release, when you know that fixing the problem will take at least 2-3 weeks at bare minimum, is an abysmal failure in communication. Someone over at NISA needs to lose their job over this. You don't pull a bait and switch like this.

Nevermind that it may take longer than 2 weeks to fix. (Notice they didn't give a timeline for the last issue?) Even if it's an honest estimate, we can't trust it due to the delays, and botched notifications.

Glad they are offering refunds, but you kind of have to wonder why Falcom gave this game to NISA instead of XSEED. XSEED has plenty of experience localizing Falcom's titles, where as NISA is starting from scratch. (Remember the amount of time it took to get Trails in the Sky ported?) Starting over with a completely different company is not a good move, and I hope it doesn't mean that Falcom will have to take a blow due to a poor localization.

All in all, I just hope the game gets fixes it needs this time, but seriously NISA: If you need to delay this (or any other game) again, give us a better heads up than 12 hours. (Especially if you know it's going to take at least two more weeks to get out.)

RawSteelUT: NISA say GOG's version is live? Link?

Bigs: http://www.pcgamer.com/ys-eight-lacrimosa-of-dana-delayed-on-pc-one-day-before-it-was-set-to-launch/

Update: Following GOG's confirmation that its version of Ys Eight would be delayed as well, NIS America said in an email that it would actually release on schedule—that is, today—and that only the Steam edition has been pushed back. And the game is in fact still available for purchase on GOG. I have reached out to all involved for more information, and will update yet again if and when the situation becomes even more confusing.

The Steam version, by the way, no longer indicates a 2017 release, but now says simply that it's "coming soon."

Quick update on the situation: Steam version was pushed back, but GOG version went live. GOG said the delay notification was delayed (seriously) and that their release was being pushed back too. Few hours later, NISA said GOG version is good to go, only Steam is delayed. GOG remains available for purchase, Steam is now "coming soon."

I dunno wtf anymore.

Bigs:
I'm completely lost. So the GOG version is available or not?
avatar
MischiefMaker: Now the question is whether they're going to extend the period that the DLCs are free.
Yes, I'd like to know too because I don't want to pre-order, just buy at whenever it gets released. So "until one week after release" would be sufficient for me, but the news still says September 19th.

To buy?

Yes, it is avaiable.

To play?

Nope, there's a red "Not Yet Available" where you'd normally install it through Galaxy, and none of the files can be downloaded from the website either.

Thanks for replying. But then, what did they mean with "GOG version went live"?
Delayed and not delayed at the same time?

If Adol is gonna go around time traveling all over the place, can he at least retrieve the double jump and underwater breathing, along with all the other useful gear he keeps misplacing between adventures?
