UPDATE:
Due to entirely unforeseen circumstances, the release date for Worms World Party Remastered has been delayed. Here's the official word from Team 17, and stay tuned for more info right here and on Twitter:

[i]Hello Wormers,

During final testing for today's release of the game, our QA team discovered a critical bug buried deep in the game's code. No one at Team17 is happy releasing the game with this bug in place. We'll be working our prods off to get this fixed and on sale as soon as possible. We’ll be providing updates via @WormsTeam17 on Twitter whenever they become available.

Thanks guys,

MT17

It strikes me as odd that Team 17 would pick WWP to give a lick of modern polish when Armageddon feels considerably more popular with the community.

But, then again, there are still patches being released for W:A to keep the game current, whereas I don't think that happened so much with WWP.

Either way it's good to see some love being given to "classic" Worms, especially given how relatively clunky the modern 2D-with-3D-graphics versions are. Perhaps if a ton of people bought into this it might send Team 17 a message that we just want a new 2D worms in a modern 2D engine?

Elmofongo: I would say the best comparison is that the Worms games are like a game of Checkers/Chess.
So how is it against computer AI? Interesting, boring, ...? Is the main reason to play to laugh at your friend when the chaos happens, something that probably doesn't have the same effect when playing against the computer? The computer doesn't seem to care no matter how much you laugh at it.

I say its pretty much the same.

You would still get hyped and statisfaction when you did an amazing feat of explosions against an AI.
I have a repolished "Worms Armageddon" for the PS3 and it had new features like various hats your worms can wear. I honestly loved that feature, which I wonder if that's going to be added to this, as I do not remember WWP having that.
Just had to buy this loved the original games although where is Armageddon.
Wow, thanks GOG. The old Worms games are best played trough LAN, at least on PC :)

Unless they've given the AI a massive overhaul, I call shenanigans on that reply.

Worms vs AI was always rubbish by comparison with human opponents. The AI will pull off some amazing shots to compensate, but in my (admittedly dated) experience, the AI never came close to identifying opportunities and strategies in the way that any human player with a few basic skills would do. In particular, humans will habitually relocate to a more opportune position (especially with ropes), while by my recollection the AI would mostly "stand and deliver" (and not uncommonly fail in a completely inane fashion).

Sure, you can still feel some satisfaction at your own skills; but if the opponent doesn't provide an interesting and variable challenge, it gets stale pretty quickly (edit: for a Worms-y definition of "stale" at least -- the games do provide very generous measures of variety and/or randomness in most aspects, after all).

I'd be very happy to be proven wrong -- hopefully things are indeed improved since the old days -- but my gut feeling is that the new WWP will still be far more enjoyable against people than against the computer (depending upon the people, of course).

w00t! Pre-ordered! :D I can't wait to see worms flying all over my screen again.
GOG, one HOLY HAND THANK YOU for making this possible!
My favorite game of all time is finally here!
I'm satisfied with my boxed version for now (which works perfectly with Win7fix implemented) but who knows, maybe I'll pick it up in the future for online play.
*dips tinyE's donkeys in concrete in preperation.

still, its not Armageddon. WWP was okay but ultimately was a bit too much in terms of generating a game at times. Also seemed to miss something atmospherically.

That would be because Worms Reloaded is supposedly an Armageddon remake. The mobile version even says it is Armageddon. And the only time Reloaded is ever going to make it here is when Galaxy gets multiplayer working, because multi on Reloaded is Steamworks only. and I'm dead serious about that; there is a DRM-Free version of it but no online exists at all to even try.

Ah yes, the travesty that was Reloaded. Don't get me started on that - it may have been fine for the mobile and console markets but the interface for PC was utterly obnoxious, and the game itself didn't feel as smooth or polished as either Armageddon or World Party did. I remember being incredibly hyped when it was announced and bought it without hesitation. More fool me!

EDIT: Oh yes, and as you said, the only multiplayer option was via Steamworks. Not being able to play through a local LAN without using the internet was very annoying.

I actually don't get it why they don't bring Armageddon here since its available on Steam for ages now.
I'm definitely buying. As much as I loved the original Worms back in the day it just hasn't aged very well. Later Worms games (Worms 2 and on) have a much better interface. Plus this is the supposed pinnacle of the 2D bunch. Never actually played Armageddon so I don't give a rat's ass about what is or isn't featured. I'm curious to see how that Galaxy support will go.

Yeah, I'm excited. :)

Sidenote: I've never understood why a lot of people preferred unlimited rope play as I've always found it extremely spammy and exploitative. IMO, limited use is just better since then one will have to use them strategically.
