mystral: Seriously, be honest. How many of you actually wanted to upgrade between different editions of PoE and had to shell out full price again? Or are you just bitching for bitching's sake, about a purely hypothetical situation?
Indeed I wonder that too. Their effort should go into exercising patience for a sale or realizing you want luxury goodies, you have to pay for it. If neither of those things are interesting yet complaining is, it's a wonder of how much one really values the actual purchase of non-ordinary video game editions.

This deluxe editions are more and more a joke, a legal theft. An insult to intelligence.
Is not about having the money to buy these ridicolously expensive versions, it just that prices are rising for the sake of it.
Even saying "how much is worth" for you is not viable.

People are talked into committing mass suicide, I can see of thousands of people talked in spending 60£ for a game (NMS...) that, who knows, how much production value will have.

But are they really that expensive? And they don't seem to rise that much. You have to assume luxury goods rise in price exponentially, I think too many lack economic education so they tend to assume what makes it easy or simple like a linear increase. And if it all boils down to money then don't buy the separate editions, purchase the cheapest one and you get the game or better, wait for a sale and only purchase the ordinary edition and you save yourself some hype inflating the value of the product and bugs on top of it.

Another reason is to take into account how the market treat us, we get used to the prices that we have been given. Sales are so common nowadays new releases open with a 5-10% off just so they can say it's on sale.

Regarding talked into, that's what you get for listening to other people, hype or marketing: their job is to sell, not to be your friend, life advisor, quality assurance but simply to put stuff in your hands with a lot of sparkle and make sure to slid a bill under the goods.

I looked over the added goodies. It's like with Pillars of Eternity, the value of the middle edition is the soundtrack and the in the most expensive you get some art book and a game guide. Personally I would go with the middle edition because I usually want a soundtrack but I also am not willing to pay full price so I'm going to wait a sale, largely because I don't expect Tyranny will be even half as fun as it promises.

muttly13: I will never understand people paying 45 dollars for a game they cant play...
I can both agree with you and also find some reasons to understand as well. :) Some people for example might be very excited about the game and thankful to the developers/company who made it and want to fully support their work right away as a way of expressing their thanks, and in hopes that their reward will be a vote to make more games like that in the future. It's a noble gesture.

In other cases though, irrational excitement and/or whimsy might be more likely. :)

*Raises hand* I think the question should be "How many would upgrade if they didn't have to shell out for the full game again" and I think the answer would be "quite a lot". I backed Pillars so I got the highest tier anyway but had I not then I would have wanted to do what I want to do with this game (Tyranny): buy and play the base game first, so I can find out if I actually LIKE this game enough to warrant getting the extra stuff for it, whether I like the ingame music enough to want to hear it outside it. This isn't much to ask when this option is available elsewhere, and the fact that this option IS available elsewhere proves that there is a market for it.

Considering how many products are coming out now that are just utter shite and clear cashgrabs using this very tactic of exclusive pre-order bonuses to get the money before people can find out the truth, I think people are rightfully getting pissed off. Especially when you consider that these 'products' are just clogging up stores now and making it harder to sift through the crap to get the good stuff. Buying games should not require such effort to avoid being screwed.

Ganni1987: For anyone wanting some numbers and math here's the difference of Pillars of Eternity on Steam vs GOG (calculations done in Euro):

If you buy PoE Hero Edition on Steam 41.99e + Upgrading to Champion Edition 13e that's a total of: 54.99e
If you buy PoE Hero Edition on GOG 41.99e + "Upgrading" to Champion Edition 54.99e that's a total of: 96.98e

What you see above is the effect of the lack of upgrade paths for Pillars of Eternity on GOG. Most likely the same thing is about to happen again with Tyranny since it's another game by the same developer (Obsidian) and same publisher (Paradox) as PoE.

Now before you go to splurge your money, think for a moment if it's right that you as a GOG user would have to pay more for exactly the same content that is available for much cheaper on a different site. Vote with your wallet people.

@GR00T: I hope they don't think it that way, because there's gonna be 1 less GOG sale from me for this game unless they rectify this issue. I'm not about to support this kind of practice anytime soon.
Yes, it's somewhat disconcerting. My policy for this sort of thing would be if I know for sure that I want a specific edition and do not want a higher edition now nor in the future, then I would buy what I want since I know I wont want to upgrade - however if I wasn't sure if I might want to upgrade later and didn't feel like going all-in, then I probably would not buy the given game at all and instead wait 6/12/18/24/600/1200/whatever months until the price of the game went down significantly enough to be worthwhile for me to buy the best edition etc.
Since I don't care for the fluff, I'll go with the cheapest, just as with PoE. Especially since I do have to ask, where is the "Digital Novella by Chris Avellone"?:P

It should be at the very bottom of your "DLC extras" list for PoE. They even included the Audiobook.

I don't have he extras, but I saw it "Coming Soon" on the product page so I've thought that it's not yet ready. Anyway GOG should get their act together and offer Upgrades for lower editions.
Has anyone made a 'Tranny Commander' joke yet?

How would one command a transmission???...
Given the low content (20-25h of normal playthrough), that it uses the same engine as PoE and that we're not talking of a AAA game here, it is priced too high - not even considering the upper editions with nothing of real interest for a big premium. Not by much, mind you, but it is really idiotic to have set the price beyond 40€ for only a 2€ gain. Around 35€ would probably have been instabuy for me, but as a result I'll just wait for a better offer. You risk your potential customers losing interest in the meanwhile, with possible mixed reviews upon release, the hype fading and your target audience switching interest to another game (like Torment that will shortly follow). Not a good marketing call imho, but I nonetheless hope the game is a success. Obsidian remains one of the few cRPGs studios we can trust these days (despite PoE being a little underwhelming), and I hope to see it flourish.
