Yeah, I'd definitely buy the missing SS games on GOG, if they appeared here, even though I already have them on Steam.

Then again I admit I am not a big fan of the HD remakes of the first two games. I'm a bit torn with them, the improved graphics are quite nice (even though the graphics in the originals are also quite nice to look at even today), but then I didn't like certain changes in the HD versions, like adding dunes to wasteland scenes. That changed the gameplay as you couldn't see and freely shoot to distant objects from behind the dunes.

There was some (fan?) remake of the first game where they improved the graphics, but didn't touch the dunes etc. Was it "Serious Sam Classics: Revolution" in my Steam library? Maybe it is the best version available of the first two games, having better graphics than the originals, but gameplay is not altered as in the HD version(s).

Don't forget the most important one - the inability of the newer engine to do the quirky gravity tricks that were in the originals, especially 2nd Encounter. Where they even had to do some level changes and get rid of those unique rooms.

Tied with that are the physics. Everything from Kleers jumping, Werebulls charging and how weapons knock back/away enemies also behaves differently from the originals.

Then you have the new models for some enemies, which also didn't impress me. Kleers look weird, I can't get over the circular saw-heads of the Beheadeds etc.

All this combined means for me that after having played through the HD once, I will never play it again and stick with the originals.

tfishell: Croteam has contact info here - try using press at croteam dot com (that's worked previously for me) - if you're interested in contacting them about GOG releases for their other games, or whatever. (I'm personally okay with features on Steam missing from GOG releases but I understand if not everyone feels that way; I'd like Serious Sam 2 here even though I already own it on Steam.)
Out of all Serious Sam games that are still missing if only 1 game is to come to GOG I would definitely want Serious Sam 2 to come to GOG the most.

ecamber: Wow, so excited for this! This is one of the very few series I would ever even consider buying on Steam, and it's always a tough decision.

Now that I can order it on GOG, it's a no-brainer to preorder the Deluxe edition! My only worry now is whether my computer can run it...
They said that 4 cores cpu, 3-4 gb vram graphics card and 8gb ram will definitely be minimum. But for recommended specs they are optimizing the game right now and they said that they will announce minimum and recommended specs 2 weeks before launch.

Interesting. Apparently I didn't play the HD versions far enough to learn about all the differences, that "dune thing" can be seen in the first level, after all.

I've finished the originals several times, that good they are. And damn now I'd like to replay them again.

19LuckyLuke99: The reason why they won't release Serious Sam 2 on Gog though is unclear. It's most likely because Serious Sam 2's code is a mess so they don't want to touch it, they aren't touching the Steam version either since 2016.
avatar
idbeholdME: Most likely because of the coming remake of Serious Sam 2, sometime in the future. They said they wanted to redo Serious Sam 2 in order to make sense and not just be Serious Sam on drugs.

Though they haven't specified at all, just that they want to eventually do it, I guess they no longer want to bother with the black sheep of the family.

avatar
19LuckyLuke99: If CT wants to add all those games to Gog they would have to carefully extract all steamworks code from SS2, SS3 and SSHD. While it's possible for SS2 it's very hard to do for SS3 and SSHD which are very steamworks dependent.
avatar
idbeholdME: Or VERY carefully apply a crack :P. Even though I have SS3 on Steam, I use mostly my pirated version which works perfectly fine without all the Steam shennanigans.
Ubisoft did that at least once..
I have been thinking about this lately and it is nice that Croteam release it here but it might just be worthwhile to let this cook a little after release before buying because some parts of me are wondering how much steamworks integration this game will have including what it entails in this case and will the GOG version be botched in comparison.

Right now i can't tell if the GOG version will be like Stadia/Consoles or closer to Steams.

Some of you might know that Serious Sam: The First Encounter is not up to date here on GOG (see here). So since Croteam is about to sell us this new installment I decided to ask them about the missing update. Here is what happened.

After asking two times on discord and getting my mail back from the website because it could not be delivered I finally posted a DM to the mod on discord. The mod did not react but he did not have any problems posting more announcements for the new Serious Sam game so I complained and that's when I got the following reply:

"I'm sorry, I don't know you. I'm not obligated to reply to you privately. I am also allowed to miss your messages when they come in because I've got work to do. Maybe a gentle ping would do you better than straight up rude comments. There are currently no plans on updating SS TFE on GOG."

Croteam cannot expect that I will ever buy a single game from them in the future with this attitude.

Is the first game on Steam updated to use 1080p right out of the box?

Yes (click the link in my post to find out more).
Right now the community uploaded those Steam files to some servers and recommend to download those files. But why do I buy on GOG just to download additional Steam files to get my game updated? This is not how it should be.

Would be nice but since you can just install a mod to add the functionality, I don't much care to be honest. Maybe just add it to the description? It's just like downloading and installing a patch back in the old days after a game released.

Maybe now that GOG is aware of it, they might try to investigate from their own angle. But it's not gonna be as simple as it seems. They would have to negotiate both with the creator of the fixes (some russian guy apparently) and Croteam. For a game that is regularly sub $1, I'm afraid it's not gonna be worth it.

If you explained it to the mod saying that you were unable to get hold of any higherups so had to go though them then (and I might be wrong here, but as a mod of several sites in the past this is how I feel.) Then that's the whole point. You will deal with day to day mod things on the forum or channel or whatever but you are staff there and people will look to you and message you, that you don't know. It comes with it.

Edit: You don't know something you pass it up, you don't just randomly say something which is what they said.

To be honest. I got this game gifted so not buying anything from Croteam and telling others about their attitude is enough for me. If I had paid money I would have refunded. I don't buy games here just to get them updated by downöoading/pirating additional files for a version on another store.

Well, here is my first DM to him (which he ignored):
"Is there any way to contact the devs about the missing GOG update for Serious Sam: The First Encounter? I posted here on discord but got no reply. I then tried the contact form on the website but my mail could not be send. What can I do next? Thank you!"

I guess I made perfectly clear that he was my only hope to get in contact with anybody.

I really would not defend such a behavior at all. After all we are talking about potential customers with valid questions. Treat them like dirt and accept the consequences. They won't see a dime from me and I could not care less about their future. Other small devs know that I even would buy a game I don't think is perfect just to help the devs/publishers ... but Croteam definitely managed to get on my blacklist.

I'd report them then. I've seen it today a thread here on GOG got removed then reappeared as obviously the mods questioned it (so just removed it from view.) but it was ok. They didn't act on a whim. (At least I hope I'm right.)

Mods are usually just that forum or Discord only. They get told very little on the general workings of things so there's no way they will know if they are or are not working on it in a sort space of time.

But either way as someone representing Croteam (as mods do represent companies they mod for) their reply should not of been said.
