No Man's Sky a science-fiction game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy, is available to pre-order now — DRM-free on GOG.com

Intergalactic travel changes the notion of time. Unimaginable speeds connect impossibly distant worlds, dilating lifetimes, blending generations. A round-trip may find your world aged and unrecognizable, separated from your loved ones, irrevocably alien. In an intergalactic society, only the few set off towards the stars — explorers, those unafraid and with nothing to lose. They set off never to come back as far as our lifetimes are concerned. And thus, we still look up at an infinite sky, now within our reach, yet still untouched — a no man's land, a No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky promises discovery of an infinite, uncharted universe. Its billions of stars, planets, unknown living creatures, breathtaking sights and lonely wastelands — all seamlessly connected — populated with explorers drawn to the distant mysteries of the horizon, eager to leave a permanent mark in their wake.
The frontier is merciless and dangerous. Exposed to a universe of extremities in your fragile suit and ship, you'll need resources and upgrades to get far — as well as the means stand your ground in fight.
Whether you journey to the center of it all or seek out the farthest reaches of existence, the trip will not be simple or dull. You'll catalogue things unseen, discover alien artifacts and reveal mysteries of the universe. If you survive.

The pre-order incentive for No Man's Sky includes the Horizon Omega ship — faster engines, better guns, all to kickstart your trip and help you survive longer on the interstellar journey.

Reach out and touch the No Man's Sky, available for pre-orders now, DRM-free on GOG.com! The game is scheduled to be released on June 21st in North America, June 22nd in Europe and Australia, and June 24th in the UK and Rest of World.
Journey to the center of the galaxy??? I always thought space exploration was about "explore the edges of the galaxy." Even so, why would I aim for the middle? How do I even know where the middle is unless I reach the far other end of the galaxy? what happens when I reach the edge of the galaxy?
Anyone else seeing the "Launching in: " bit right before the front-page countdown appearing in French? EDIT: I mean besides people that have the site language set to French. =P

Eagerly awaiting release, pre-ordered, which I rarely do, but I've been watching enough streams to know what the game is like. Seeing over 10 hours of unfiltered gameplay, mixed with/without commentary is a better yardstick than a review anyway.

I wonder how the servers are going to hold up on release day... GOG's download servers that is.
I've had issues with download speeds in the dial-up modem range before on GOG.

Smannesman: Why?
Isn't that sexual assault or harassment?
Only if you don't like Depeche Mode

Yes. And you're correct, it wasn't like that earlier.

Usual scenario is that civilization centers require quick access to nearby resources, thus the center of an area (like the aforementioned galaxy) is the most civilized, and most of the exploration is done on the outskirts. From what I'm seeing from various streams though, the civilization is long gone, and you are trying to trace it to its origin. So you start at the edge and try to move towards the center.
Am I the only one that didn't spend years dreaming about this game, only really took interest a few days ago, and am expecting it not to have everything I'd want in a game like this? I swear some people are crazy.

I'm personally more excited for the future of the game than I am of the game in it's current form, seeing as the developer has stated they want to take, let's call it the Minecraft route, continuous free updates. The NMS of six months from now could be vastly better than the NMS of today and I'm more than willing to take that journey with them.

Not saying I disagree with you, but Minecraft was $10 in the beginning instead of $60 and never claimed to be a complete game.

Erm, okay true. But releasing more content for free doesn't mean your initial version of the game wasn't complete. NMS is considered a complete game. Developers always add more even when software has reached a complete state.

Never played minecraft.

Anyway, due to the scope of the game, I can see problematic adding stuff that will keep you going for ages, unless is procedurally generated.
But, imho, here is the problem.
No matter how good an algorithm is, it still limited and has boundaries and, in the end, everything result different, but similar.

You see all these animals wandering the planets. But aside aesthetics, are they any different?
Their behavior? Interaction with the player? Intelligence?

I bet they make different sounds...and their meats taste different.

That is extremely easy stuff to do with basic AI..
Even minecraft has that.... squid that swim... dragons that fly shoot fireballs...
skeletons that run under trees/into water to avoid burning in daytime... rabbits that eat carrots
dogs that scare skeletons and cats that scare creepers.

That is like AI basic 101....

here is what has been stated in faq's videos i know of.
creatures that feel threaten run from players... predators that eat other creatures.
Species that is possible to completely kill off... species that breed.
There was some talk of cross breeding but they didn't get that in...
So just normal species to same species breeding with traits.

Creatures have vocal sounds based on size , enviorment and other things they didn't go into detail about.

The music base is done by real artists but than remixed in the game to create unique music for everything.

The company does have some thoughts of adding future expansions they have stated everything is simple for them to do so and they already have first patch ready to go.

They are taking community input for future content and they have thrown the idea of building around but still debating cause it kills one of the core ideas of exploration.

I'll wait and see.

I think the guys have done a great job, but I'm a bit skeptic on how much diversity you can expect from algorithms.

How many variations of stories does dwarf fortress have?
They using the same concept... which can always be expanded in sense.

But ya some people will be best to wait.

But dwarf fortress is much narrow in scope.
